Windows 9x Reg Keys

By mlaforge ·
I have 2 questions re: the Win9x registry and Policy Template files. The first is how do I change a value in the (Default) value of key? If I use VALUENAME (Default), it will add another (Default) valuename with my data in it. The original will still be there. Also, is there a key that will prevent users from seeing only the control panel? The Admin.adm file comes with a way to prevent seeing Control Panel and Printers, but we want them to see the printers folder. Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you how to hide the control panel but I can tell you how to hide items inside of it. Do a search for *.cpl (Control Panel) files. If you rename the extension to say, .lpc that item will no longer show up when control panel is opened. For instance, the Add/Remove Programs icon is a file called appwiz.cpl If you rename the extension, when a user opens Control Panel he or she will not see the Add/Remove Programs applet.

I only need to hide it for certain end users. Renaming the *.cpls will affect all users. I need to do this through a Policy file during logon.

If you right click on the key you want to change then select modify you should be able to change it.

I can do this manually, I need to know how to change it using a Policy Template file to take effect during user logon.

What type of network is this? If it is a Novell networks you could limit their access thru Nwadmin. Revoken rights to execute the control panel while making a icon for their Printers.

No, It is a NT network. Sorry to leave that bit out. My servers are NT4SP6 and my workstations are Win9x. Also sorry about the unacceptable, it seems that it is the only way to make a comment like this post so others will still see it as unresolved.

It would be really nice if original posts included all relevant information. If you refer to users, and then say (to me in your rejection) that you really meant "some users," don't your think that that might be a little misleading?

I thought that since I was asking for a registry hack to use in a Policy Editor Template file *.adm, it was pretty clear.

for the control panel/printer problem, disable the control panel/printers and then create a folder with the following name:
Printers.{2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d}
this should give you access to the printer queues through the folder.
