Windows Freezes

By icurmine ·
I have a 400Mhz PII with 96 RAM. Just recently my PC has started to temporarily freeze up. It usually only last for about 15 seconds before it "releases" and is useable again, but it is happening more and more lately. My browser is IE 5.0, but that is not the only app to freeze. When it does happen everything goes, what ever sound maybe playing at the time skips and my mouse sticks where it's at.

Could be a few things. Have you changed you power management settings? Is FindFast in the startup? The hard drive could be very defragmented.

I would run scan disk and defrag and then boot to safe mode and delete the drivers for your modem, sound card, video, monitor, ports, network adapter, etc. Then reboot and let it reinstall the drivers and see if that takes care of it. If not, you'll need to wipe the drive and start over. If you are still having problems then it is a hardware problem. Troubleshoot by removing one piece of hardware at a time untill the problem goes away. Good luck.

Odds on favorite of mine (and if you've read my past posts, You'll know...) is that your virus scanner is checking every file you d/l. That includes the graphics that load from every web page. I'd lighten up on the v-scan settings and possibly disable the WebScan feature (if you're using McAfee's.... I don't know what Norton's version of that is.)

I had that problem before too. I removed some of the applications from startup to free up some RAM. Are you usually experiencing this problem when you have more than one app open and your system tray has a bunch of icons in it?
