I would check for an IRQ conflict. You may be using the same IRQ for several devices like your video card, modem, nic, and mouse all on the same IRQ. This will cause a freez and sometimes and involuntary reboot.

Go to your control panel-system icon. Right click the top icon in the display window. and i believe you need to select resources, or properties (i am not running a 98 pc or I could coach a little better...sorry). You are in the right place when you see all the IRQ channels listed innumeric order. 0-15 take note of any repeted numbers and look for a number that is repeated or shared by more than 3 devices. You may see a device called IRQ steering on alot of the channels. This is normal, this will allow you to have more than onedevice per IRQ, but only 2 if you have more than 2 per number you are experiancing a conflict. To resolve this conflict go to my next response to your question.

you can go back to the screen that you were in befor you right clicked the icon to go into the properties to view the IRQs. In here locate the problemed Device and double click it. go to the resources tab. If you are unable to change the IRQ you will need to access the BIOS of your system and turn off the plug n play options (you will have to hunt for this in your bios since there are several different ones and they have different menus). Once the PNP is disabled. Boot up your machine and return to the Resource tab of the device(s) that have the conflict.(note that just because the device says "device has no conflicts" or "device is working properly" doesn't mean anything realy because as soon as it has a conflict, you will lock up and notbe able to check to see which one locked up.

Oh and as for your actual question. I do not know if you can log such events in win98se. I would suggest searching the hdd for any .log, .tmp, .old files and sort them by date. then start opening them with the note pad until I found something.

Good luck

I agree with the last answer that it is probably a conflict. Try booting up in safe mode (Press F8 repeatedly whilst booting up) and then open device manager. In safe mode you are likely to see multiple devices installed and some devices that you don't even have on your machine. This is due to sloppy installation procedures by companies. Delete any double occurences of devices, eg (if 2 keyboards delete both as Windows will find only one when it restarts)But don't mess with system devices atthis point. Reboot and let it find and install new devices. Also try turning off Video and Bios shadowing in the bios as this can cause hangs if trying to write to this area of memory.
Try running Dr Watson to obtain a snapshot log (Help - Dr Watson)

Good point from Ciderman,
I forgot all about safe mode, however if they are Plug and Play devices (plug and prey) then you may have to physicaly remove the card and place it in a different expansion slot. Also a good mention of the shadowing...

before you start changing irq settings. When does the pc hang? after POST after splash screen? or during actual use. The issue could be a number of different things depending on when the pc hangs. feel free to e-mail me with more info
