Windows is not starting up after updating it

By gnkanang ·
Hi Guys,

I was repairing a Toshiba laptop. After fixing it i decided to run microsoft update, which it picked up 61 updates. After downloading and installing the updates it requested a restart. Which i did. Now its not booting up. It stops on the black screen which gives you a option to restart it with the normally setting. But even if you choose any of the options nothing happens. Its starts the count down, stops at zero. But nothing happens. Its just does not start up.

Guys i need your help, any ideals??

Thanks

Greg

Safe Mode & System Restore?

Or is that part of what isn't available to you? I couldn't quite tell which 'options' you meant.

"It stops on the black screen which gives you a option to restart it with the normally setting. But even if you choose any of the options nothing happens."

The first thing I would try is restarting in Safe Mode (F8 while booting, usually) then use System Restore.

You do have a full system backup, don't you?

Selecting safe mode, now it comes up with:
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\hal.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\kdcom.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\msvcrt.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\kernel32.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\ntdll.dll

Any ideal? I have not got a clue. Worse of all i did not backup the data.

Thanks

Hi,

What I would do is to remove the HDD, and connect, via a USB device, to another computer and copy everything. At least your data etc is safe.
Re install the HDD and boot from the XP disk and try doing a repair.

Do you have a Dos start up disk? If so boot up your PC using this disk, when the prompt appear try running SCANDISK for windows 98 or CHKDSK /F for XP or above.

This worked for me

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the support you guys gave me. I have managed to resolve the problem, A virus was the cause of the problem. It sames like running and installing the updates triggered the virus off. Because i have just repaired window, all was fine, but when i run the updates again it all started again.

so i have taken the HHD out and run a virus scan, guess what??

15 viruses!!

All is good now

Cheers guys

Greg
