windows locking up....help

By gchastine ·
Here's my delima. Windows 2000 just freezes when working in it. I've re-formatted the drive and reinstalled windows 2000 and it freezes on installation. Tried a New hard drive I had for another system. Same thing. Freezes during installation. I've stripped the Motherboard of all cards, etc and left the board, drive, memory, cd and fd drives intact. Same thing. Is this a motherboard problem? Thank you for your help.

It is most likely a RAM problem.

Start by simply using canned air to **** the dust off of the RAM sockets.
Then, remove the RAM, clean off the connections, and re-seat the RAM into the motherboard.

(Follow ESD precautions, and turn off the power to the system first!!!)

If you have other RAM available, try swapping RAM modules.

Try a different video card.

If this does not resolve your problem, it could be a bad or overheated CPU.
A weak CPU fan or a fan installed backward (Socket 370 or mostly for Socket A) will cause the CPU to overheat, and the problem of installing Windows.
If the CPU fan seems working properly, check the CPU by replacing it or installing it in another computer.

Thank you for all the answers to my question. I appreciate it very much. After following the advice here, the problem was due to a faulty motherboard. I replaced the board and all problems were solved. Thank you again
