Windows ME on a Peer-to-Peer Network

By carole ·
Can I set up the above on a Client for Microsoft Networks. The other two systems are Win98 and even though I have them all in the same Workgroup with unique computer names, we can not see the WindowsME machine and vise versa. If so, could you giveme some tips. The network connection is fine (green light test). Thanks for your help.

If your Win98 computers are seeing each other and the only problem is that the WinME computer won't see/participate with these, I'd recommend looking at the network adapter in the WinME computer. Make sure that you are using the drivers specifically for WinME. See if you can determine what controller chip is on the NIC and checkout their website for potential updates for WinME. Also run the diagnostics on the NIC; it may be partially functional (lighting up the light, but not totally functional). In other words, you may have a bad network adapter.

Also, make sure that all the computers are using the same ip network... 192.168.0.x with a subnet 255.255.255.0 -- the 255's in the subnet mask determine the network and the network portion must be the same on all three computers. Check Network, TCP/IP properties.... or run WINIPCFG on all three computers and troubleshoot from there.

On the Windows Me computer do you see the ME computer listed? What happens when you click on the "all network" icon?
