    Windows ME: Restart in DOS Mode

    I realize Windows ME does not come with “restart in dos mode” which causes lots of problems when installing various programs. Does anyone know a way to get around this? It would be appreciated.

      Actually there is – exactly the same as in Win9x, just needs to be coaxed out of
      hiding. See:

      for one method as to how to add the DOS function back in.

        It didn’t work for me even though I have the same release as in the article. When I ran the program, my IO.sys did not need to be changed. The other files updated. I went ahead and tried the remainder of the procedure and it took me about 3 hours to get my computer booting from my hard drive again. Bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      if you want DOS try Start -> Run -> “Command” and you’ll do the trick. I don’t think there’ll be a need to restart in DOS mode.

      There is no DOS support under WinME. ME is Microsoft’s attempt to move away from the 9X kernel to the NT kernel and they produced the absolute worst OS of their career, short of MS DOS 4.0. I do not think it possible to invoke a DOS environment under ME. ME simply does not support DOS mode.
