Windows ME shut down problem

By stu ·
I am running windows ME as the primary operating system, with w98 as a backup on a second hard drive. ME and 98 cannot run at the same time, as they are switched through the BIOS startup routine. Just lately I have been having the following message:
windows write protection error
you must restart you computer
when I have been shuting down. On restart, the scandisk turns up a boot error, and corrects it.
1. what is causing this problem,
2. how do I sort it, and
3. is it doing any lastingdamage?
Its not causing any other problems that I can see, just beeing annoying, which is why I changed from 98 in the first place.
Your help is appreciated.

Windows ME shut down problem

Hi!

Do both win98 and winme reside on a totally seperate disk or does both boot from same C:, if both boot from same C: there you might have your problem.

Since you have a backup disk with Win98, this is what I would do:
Boot with a boot disk, remove all partitions from the disk containing WinME.

Now you reboot computer, without first creating any partitions.
Boot on same boot disk and recreate partitions as you want, reboot and format disks and install WinME, this way you will be totaly free from viruses, strange partitiontables and all other such things.

If the problem reocuurs after this then I'll start suspecting hadware error.

Thanks, hasse.
I was hoping I might use the format after I have tried everything else!
as of 01/09, I have sorted it, turned out to be a bad USB game controller driver!
Thanks for your help.

I am also running ME and 2000 in a dual boot situation. Is it possible that a sector on your hard disk has gone bad in your system area? Usally a Windows protection error denotes a hardware problem at a critical area in which Windows uses. Try running a thorough scandisk with the automatically fix eror box unchecked. This will check all sectors on your hard disk. Good luck

Windows ME shut down problem

Hi boysun.
Run the scan disk as suggested. I normally run it on the autofix, but deselected it as you suggested. I also used mscongif.exe and de-selected a game controller, and it worked fine. Since then, I have re-installed the game controller, and all is well, well, as well as windows gets! Thanks for your help.
