Windows NT/Dr.Watson error in Explorer.e

By dlweaver ·
Running Windows NT w/s 4.0 with SR 6a. When browsing the machines local drives, Dr. Watson comes up with an error referring to EXPLORER.EXE. I looked into the Dr. Watson log file and it says it is an "ACCESS VIOLATION". I logged on as Administrator and still received the error. The error is not consistent either, it can happen at any time running any number of processes. How can I eliminate this error?

There are more than a few people that would like to know the answer to this question - we've seen it too.

The access violation is not a permissions error but rather an error in how a program accesses memory. It's a programming defect and since explorer.exe is Microsoft's program, they ought to be fixing it.

What we have done and what I'm encouraging others to do is report the situation to Microsoft so they can get a bug fix into Service Pack 7.

Hi, microsoft notes this as a problem with the rpcrt.dll. They focus the problem with transaction server, though they maintain it does occur on both server and workstation intermittedly. They argue its been corrected in service packs, so depending on what you run now, you may want to try sp6a. Also, check out the knowledge base article: Q189612
Hope this helps.

Just a little FYI regarding this error in case you see it. I am experiencing the problem on 2 machines one has the SP5 and the other is running SP6a. I think Microsoft just doesn't want to admit they screwed up!!

if you have another machine available, copy the explorer.exe from it, then rename explorer.exe from bad machine and copy new explorer to it, then reaply the service pack. That's worked for me in the past
