    Windows Remote Desktop problems

    Locked

    by jonxdoe ·

I finally upgraded my main home PC to an XP Pro box.
I am trying to set up Windows Remote Desktop to Win 2000. I can connect from the 2000 PC to my XP but not from my XP to 2000.
It is a peer network via a Belkin Cable router. I can ping both ways, I can see the workgroup PC’s, map network drives, … what am I missing???
I have been installing software and moving files for several hours and my brain has hit a bad sector!
    Any ideas or links??

Yes, I added the new user. I even tried using my Admin log-in.
I keep getting the generic message “This computer can’t connect to the remote computer”

Sorry, I must have been editing the other post while you were replying to it. I edited it to show the link to where instructions are located.

        Access?

I am running Win 2000 Pro w/sp4 not 2K server.
I am trying to find access options.

Sorry, I had assumed that you had installed Terminal Services on the Win2K machine to allow remote access/control. As far as I know, if you don’t have something running as a server, you can’t remote into Win2K.

I guess I don’t understand why, after re-reading your original post, if the computers are all on the same network/router (in home?) why you would want to remote desktop to one of them. Are you confusing remote desktop with simple file sharing?

          Remote desktop not file sharing

          I have 3 PC’s I don’t want to have 3 keyboards/monitors/mice/speaker/etc..
1). I have a KVM switch but sometimes I loose the keyboard or mouse functions when I switch between the PC’s. I must then reboot the affected PC.
2). I have a few legacy Win ’98 applications that won’t run well in XP (even in Run As mode).
3). I am retiring the 2000 PC as the O/S is failing badly and I can’t find the install disks for some of the programs I still use.
Remoting in is an easy solution to all my problems as my wife also uses the computer and forgets about the KVM switch and calls me ’cause the computer is not working.

Were you able to remote into this particular Win2K machine before you upgraded the other one to WinXP?

This is a new XP PC.
I had 2 machines before, my w2k box is suffering a slow death and a 98 box I rarely use.
I was able to share files between the 2 machines over NetBEUI and the loss of the keyboard and/or mouse was not that big of a deal on the 98 box. The 2k box is having many problems, HDD full, OS crashing, but I still need the applications on it.
I am just trying to figure out why I can connect from my 2k box to my XP box but not from XP to 2k

          Because 2K isn’t a server

Because, if Terminal Services (that’s what remote desktop was called before XP) isn’t installed or enabled on the 2K machine to create the server, there’s nothing for the XP remote desktop to connect to. Win2K alone can’t do it.

          Other application working

          In reply to Access?

I found another utility that is working for me for now. I am just stubborn with problems like this, I want to know why it isn’t working and how to fix it.
          Thanks for the help.

          If it ain’t broke…..

          by thumbsup2 ·

In reply to Other application working

It’s not that it’s not working or broken, it never was there to begin with. You can’t fix something if it ain’t broke. 😉

What application did you end up using? I was just about to suggest Ultra VNC. 🙂

Glad you got it figured out though.
