Maybe you are thinking about SFC.EXE thats restore/update missing or deleted program files.
A good place to start is a search online for what you after, alot of help sites out there.

Which tool to use, depends on the problem that you are having.

If you cannot boot into safe mode, you best option is to re-install Windows.

With 98, you will not loose any programs or settings.
If what caused the problem was a system update, you might want to have windows replace new versions of files with the version on the CD.
If you do so, you will need to perform numerous security and compatability updates.

I wish I had a program to fix Windows, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. But the truth is their isn't any single program that will fix Windows.

There are 1000s of programs that will each help you fix minor problems, a good site for these is http://www.majorgeeks.com/

I only use Norton utilities (but rarely) & RegCleaner along with the Windows tools such as Scandisk, Defrag.

I've never re-installed a OS on my own PCs & never will, I've had to on other peoples but only to get data off thenI just reformat (cheaper than spending 5hrs trying to figure out what they did), re-installing OS's rarely solves the problem, they usually reappear a short time later.
