Windows restarting

By edellser ·
I'm running windows 98SE with a 333 Celeron Cpu. The problem I'm encountering is that when I want to restart windows the computer hangs up at the windows restarting screen. If I want to shut windows down, the computer shuts down ok.

Once the computer hangs, press CNTRL+ALT+DEL,to check what is not responding
Check to make sure no programs are running in the background
Check the Anti-Virus configuration is set to scan at startup
Do you have screen savers to load at startup

One of the facts of Windows 98 is startup and shutdown problems.

Check out the technical knowledge base at microsoft's web site.
There are numerous suggestions and a couple of patches for shutdown / startup problems.

Make sure that your motherboard and video card drivers are up to date.
Video problems are a common source of Windows 98 freezing.

To help see if you have other problems, reduce the number of programs loaded at startup.
From the run box, type in, and run msconfig,
Clickon the startup tab,
Unckeck all of the programs that load at startup.
If this corrects the restart problem, go back to msconfig, and one at a time add your startup programs back in until you find the one that is causing the problem.

It could be the sequence the programs are loaded, or a problem with one of the programs.

Also, check device manager for devices with "?" or "!" this indicates a problem with a device. This can also cause windows to hang.

Registry errors also can cause the computer to freeze at startup.
You can try regclean from microsoft, (a free download) or numerous third party registry cleaners.

Im wondering a few things. Why are you restarting anyway, have you added something new or is this during install of windows, or is this an upgrade? How much mem do you have left...etc etc. Basically I would agree with the other answer you recieved here but you may want to think about all of those other things as well, so you can pick the most appropriate solution. Hope this helps! :)
