Windows Secondary IP only works with IP within same VLAN?

By targotargo ·
Hello....

As subject. Inside "Advance TCP/IP settings" of Windows, we can add additional IP addresses and gateway. Will it work if the IP is in a different vlan. (i.e. Primary IP 10.1.1.10/24 VLAN1 and Secondary IP 10.1.10.99/24)

I don't want to upgrade the Intel NIC driver and use the NIC tool to enable VLAN interface.

Thanks
Targo

Shouldn't matter

If your having issues connecting to something on the secondary IP, it's probably a DNS issue. Make sure you have a DNS server listed that is on that network, or add a static setting to a server via the hosts file. Otherwise, you will need to add the gateway used by the secondary IP address.

Not a DNS Issue

Thanks for your reply.

The server is using an IP address of 192.168.11.1 which is within the VLAN1 and I added a secondary IP of 10.10.10.1 which is within the VLAN2. After do so, I was not able to ping 10.10.10.1. So, I am wondering the Windows secondary IP only works with IP within the same VLAN since windows won't send add vlan tag into a packet.

What do you think?

Thanks & Regards,
Targo
