Windows Update Problem

By gcohen ·
I am trying to run MS updates to a server running 2000 Server. It is configured to run Terminal Server for both remote and local users. I get an error "Terminal Service must be in install mode to run update" when trying to run windows update thru IE. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

This indicates that Terminal Services is running in execute mode. You have to be in install mode to install applications. Find out which mode TS is in by running the following commands:

Click Start > Run. The Run window opens.
Type cmd and then click OK to open a command window.
Type change user/query to find out what mode Terminal Server is running.

Type the appropriate command to change the mode, and then click OK. i.e...

change user /execute changes mode to execute mode
change user /install changes mode to install mode

Another alternative is to download the updates to a folder and then used add remove programs and manually install the programs by using the CD/Floppy options and drill to the folder that has the updates you downloaded. That will be another way of getting into install mode. You can also use the windows updates option that is in add/remove programs... under Add New Programs.

This should work for you.

Please have a space between user and / when you try to find out what mode TS is on... i.e

Change User /querry

Sorry for missing that...
