Windows Vista: Recurring Error Message (problem solved!)

    Locked

This might not have anything to do with the fact that I use Vista, but I thought I’d put it in the title anyway. In fact, I think what I’ve got is a virus or trojan and I wondered if anyone had come across this one before. I have /no idea/ how I got this – I haven’t installed any new programmes or anything – but for about five days now an error message pops up every time I open a programme, or some kind of system process starts up that I’m not even aware of – which means I get at least twenty when I switch on my computer, and I have to keep continually clicking with the mouse to get rid of them before the computer will load.

    The message is this:

“C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~1\GOEC62.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.”

Like I said, I haven’t installed anything for about a month. I’ve tried finding the file or the folders that it names and I can’t locate it or them. I don’t actually think it’s got anything to do with Google. But does anyone know what I can do to fix it? Bearing in mind that I am no computer expert. I’ve tried running a virus scan (AVG) and it’s come up clean.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the wonderful WinPatrol!
