Windows XP always boots up in safemode what is the fix?

By glyndxis ·
Dear TeckRepublic members. Please could you advise how I can correct a problem that has just developed on my PC running XP. The computer now only boots uo in safemode at switch on and I cannot get it to load normaly. It also refuses to roll back on system restore even though there are lots of restore points showing. I have done a full scan with AVG full addition and AVG reports no virus found.
Any advice would be really appreciated.

Kind regards
Glyn

Hello Michael, I thank you so much for your very valuable advice. Which I so much appreciated. First I must tell you that I had miss- diagnosed my PC problem due to my Computer literacy or lack of. The problem turned out to be a corrupt display driver. This caused the screen to open in the lowest resolution simular to "Safe-Mode". But I was advised by you "Teckies" that in true "Safe-Mode" boot up it would show "Safe-Mode" in all four corners. Where as my PC did not. So being fooled by the poor graphics I assumed it was safe-mode. So assuming wrongly it made an "*** of me". I am sorry to put you to all the trouble but I do appreciate your kindness. Kind regards from Wales and Happy New Year.

In general

It sounds like your boot sector is hosed, so a XP repair install *should* fix that.

Ideally you should make a backup of any critical files first.

Even the best AV software can miss things, so malware or rootkit infection is very possible. Note that a repair reinstall will not remove malware or rootkit. Unless you changed some software or settings recently, I would suspect malware is the root cause of your issue.

Note too, that many rootkits specifically go after system restore points, so when system restore stops working, that is a red flag.

Kaspersky has a good rootkit detection/removal tool. Note that when a virus slips past your main AV package, often Kaspersky or MalwareBytes will detect it. It's rare these days to get only ONE virus at a time, typically a rootkit gets in there and brings along it's friends.

Re-install XP...

by TekyWanabe In reply to Windows XP always boots u ...

I'll go for a clean-install

- Back up all your data
- Have this checked by a good and up-to-date antivirus
- Run CHKDSK or a good 3rd party hard disk scan/repair tool
- Re-install XP and being patches up to date
- Make sure that the correct driver(s) is/are installed for each device

All the best!

Start/type 'msconfig [enter]' and check boot options.
