Question

Locked

Windows XP hangup

By glenlaw ·
Something seems to take over my computer for a few seconds and freezes the controls. Then the computer returns to what appears to be normal operation. A few seconds later the same thing occurs.

The graph under the Performance tab of the Task Manager spikes up whent the freeze occurs and drops back down when returning to normal.

Help! What is the problem?

Thanks.

Could be some kind of infection

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows XP hangup

What AV and Malware products do you have installed?

You could start it in Safe Mode and scan it with your Installed and Updated AV and Malware Products or use a Rescue Disc to scan the system without the OS running. You can read up on Rescue Disc's here

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/security/rescue-cds-tips-for-fighting-malware/3803

You should also try Malware Scanners like Spy Bot S&amp available free here

http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

And Malware Bytes

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol;1

Install both of these in Normal Mode and update after they are installed and then restart in Safe Mode and scan the system.

Of course if you are unable to install or download either of these it is more likely that you have a infection and a Rescue Disc would be the way to go.

Or it could be a Hardware issue and to check this try downloading the Ultimate Boot CD free here

http://download.cnet.com/Ultimate-Boot-CD/3000-2130_4-51584.html?tag=mncol;9

and fully test your Hardware.

could be a virus

by jamesdean1 In reply to Windows XP hangup

run a system scan with the antivirus you have...but first update your antivirus to latest virus definitions...so that it can detect all your virus from your computer..do this and share your feedback.....
