Windows XP has ip address but no internet access

By it ·
this one computer i'm working on has windows xp home sp2. it has ip address, msn messenger logs in and works fine but browsers dont, neither IE or Firefox. i've reset everything to factory defaults but still no luck.

its not a dns problem, cant go to an ip address either.

Did the winsock fix but still has the same problem.

I'm on wired LAN connection.

Couple things to check:

by robo_dev In reply to Windows XP has ip address ...

Are other PCs working on the same lan?

What is your gateway, can you ping it?

Is your gateway also doing DNS forwarding?

can you do a successful nslookup from a command prompt?

eg:

nslookup cnn.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.200:53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cnn.com
Addresses: 64.236.24.12, 64.236.29.120, 64.236.16.20,
