Windows XP (No Shut Down Option)

By YNTBOM ·
I recently loaded Windows XP on my Dell Demension T500 and there is no Shut Down option available. When I click on Tun Off Computer I get the three options: Hybernate, Turn Off anfd Restart. Do I need to load something else to get the Shut Down option back?

SYMPTOMS
When you are using Remote Desktop and connect to a Windows XP Professional computer, the Log Off and Shutdown commands are missing from the Start menu.
CAUSE
The Classic Start menu does not have these commands.
RESOLUTION
By default, Disconnect is the only command that is listed on the Classic Start menu. By default, the Log Off command is available when you use the standard Start menu. To return the Log Off command to the Classic Start menu: 1. Right-click the taskbar, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Start Menu tab.
3. The option for Classic Start menu should be selected. Click Customize.
4. Under Advanced Start menu options, click to select the Display Log Off check box, click OK, and then click OK.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
The Shutdown command is not available on the Start menu to shut down, restart, or place a remote computer in a sleep state (for example, standby or hibernation) when you are using Remote Desktop. To shut down a remote computer when you are using Remote Desktop, press CTRL+ALT+END, and then click Shutdown. Or, use the shutdown command at a command prompt. For additional information about the shutdown command, type shutdown /? at a command prompt.

What about if you do Ctrl-Alt-Delete? Is the Shutdown option there?

Those are the normal 3 options for XP with hibernate enabled (Standby in place of Hibernate otherwise).

Turn Off is same as ShutDown.

I did not change my power option. My computer was not shutting down, was giving me the message stating: It is safe to turn off your computer. I want this thing to shut down or turn off when I tell it to. I changed the power option and now it shuts down.
