Windows XP Pro & DEP

By Jacdeb6009 ·
I have just "re-built" a machine after a hard drive failure. Fortunately no data lost due to full and good back-ups.

I have re-installed Win XP Pro, and downloaded all the latest updates/patches. After completing the last lot of downloads on 11 Jan 08, the task manager generates a message saying the DEP has prevented this program from running. It then creates a memory dump and error report and shuts itself down.

I have solved the problem by disabling DEP for the task manager, but somehow this doesn't seem right.

I have three or four machines running XP Pro with very similar configurations and exactly the same update status.

Any ideas what causes this problem and what to do about it (other than selectively turning off DEP for the task manager)??

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry to be a thicko but which programme is that is being prevented from running by Data Encryption Prevention?

On second thoughts

There isn't actually anything wrong with what you have done by disabling DEP for task manager, but it could be possible that malware has forced that setting and your system should be checked thoroughly for malware.
You might like to read this article for a clear explanation http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/875352/EN-US/

... on second thoughts...

Thanks, tintoman.

The "program" that seems to cause the problem is the task manager itself (weird?)...

I have read the knowledge base article, but I am, frankly, none the wiser :)

As for malware / spyware, I run AVG Antispyware 7.5 with a fully updated database and it reports the system to be clear...

Are there any opensource / freeware scanners that I could use as a "second opinion"??

Thanks!
