Windows XP Repair

By mattrk ·
I'm having problems with a windows xp home installation. I'm not sure what happend, but the installation will boot and after the loading screen just goes blank. I'm not sure what the problem is. I booted from the windows cd and brought up the Recovery Console, and it let me login to my installation. It showed it to be the only one: 1: C:\Windows. Anyway, when i go back and choose to "Setup Windows XP", i hit enter and it asks me for a previous version of windows for the upgrade check. When it gets past there it just shows me the partitions.

After all that is said, why the heck will the recovery console let me login, but the stupid setup wont see the previous installation? All i want to do is repair the damaged installation.

I'd appriciate any help you can provide!!!!!

Hi Matt,
I think what you sould is to re-run setup from the CD, but this time be very carefull with what response you are making during the installation. Else, you may again skip some files.
Try this, I guess it will work.
I'll will get to latter if it dosen't.

Well the problem is that i need to recover a "broken" xp home installation. Its been running just fine for about a year. And last week it just stoped working. She said she might have gotten a virus or something, but i cant tell. As a side note, i also replaced the ram. It was causing her to lock up all the time. I'd appriciate any help!!

Can you come up in safe mode? If you can, run virus checkers and spyware checkers (both Ad Aware and Spybot - make sure to get updates) from the safe mode desktop. Then make sure your video settings are at the low end, and retry to boot to real mode. This has worked for me in the past. You may also want to try CWShredder in case you have CoolWeb Search on your machine. The other programs can detect it, but not always remove it.
