Four options:

1. Run ??CHKDSK /R?? without the quotes from Recovery Console.
2. System Restore. If you can boot to ??Safe Mode with Command prompt??, you may try System Restore to an earlier time than you did Windows update.
3. Reinstall Windows on top of the current one.
4. Backup your data and clean install Windows.

If you need more information on each of the above, please add a comment.

I assume the Windows update included Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Refer to MS KB Article 875355

If you follow instructions from the MS KB Article 875355, you may receive a BSOD with error message "winsrv missing". If this is the case, just run "batch spuinst.txt" from Recovery Console one more time.

Once you uninstalled SP2, check whether your motherboard (MB) needs to be BIOS flashed. Surf to your MB manufacturer website and make sure you got the latest BIOS version. Install SP2 again. If you get a boot problem again, there is a possibility that your MB may not be compatible to SP2 even if your MB has the latest BIOS. If this is the case, you got two choices; replace the MB. or do not install SP2.

1. You must be able to boot to ?Safe Mode?, ?Safe Mode with Command Prompt?, or ?Last Known Good Configuration? to run System Restore which can put the Windows back to the time when it ran fine.
2. You boot to Recovery Console to uninstall Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2).
3. Reinstalling Windows on top of the current one will uninstall SP2. If your problem was caused by SP2, this process will make your Windows bootable. You have to reinstall all MS critical updates. Make sure you do not install SP2 again.
4. Clean installing Windows should work unless you install SP2 again.

You must identify the cause of the rebooting problem. The way I see it, SP2 caused Windows unstable because the motherboard (MB) BIOS is not compatible (or ready) to SP2. To fix this, you have to do BIOS flash to see if it works. Please provide detail of your MB Manufacturer (MSI, ASUS, ABIT, Intel, and so on) and Model.
