My control panel in Win98 does not contain the following icons: add/remove hardware, add/remove programs, system. How can I get them to appear? I need them to troubleshood another problem. GAC

Try running the setup.exe from the cdrom again, the setup should repair the lost icons.

Download TweakUI for Win98, it has the option of what icons to show/hide in Control Panel. The tweak is freely available from many sites or I can email it if you wish.

TweakUI solved my problem. Now I can move on to the next problem with my computer.

The other two answers have the primary things you should do. If this is a home PC, then you should have those icons regardless. If it is a business PC, you better run the Windows Policy Editor and ensure that those options were not turned off. The policy editor is located on the Windows CD in \Admin\Apptools\Poledit.

Hope this helps!

I think your windows is broken. because there is no the most important thing trhat must be on control panel. the solution that you must re-install windows 98. You don't have to delete previous windows. but in Dos, you re-install it. And automatically Installer will replace the previous one (previous win98).

First off, I'd try running SFC.
Go start, run, and type in SFC.
This is a program that comes with Win98 that searches for missing / corrupt files, and notes any that have been updated. Just hit start, let it find any files, replace corrupt ones, and let it update info for ones it says are newer.
If this does not make them re-appear, hit restore one file from cd, and type in this file.
(source d:\win98, target is c:\windows\system)
appwiz.cpl
Hope this helps.
