WinPopUP in Win2K or NT

By tech ·
I've used winpopup in a Win 98 network. Now I'm using Win2K on my machine, we have a NT standalone server, and one machine using NTWorkstation. The Win98 machines that have Winpopup can send me a message, but I can't find a way to send them messages or respond to their message. I could use e-mail but we don't have Exchange or ms mail (goes out to an isp).

Is there something like winpopup in Win2K? I looked into Message Queing and loaded it, but did not find a way to use it for sending messages to other machines in the LAN.

WinPopUP in Win2K or NT

Windows NT and 2000 use the Messenger service (which is the NT Equivalent) to receive messages. The way to send (and 9x clients should get these messages in a winpopup box) is to type, from a command prompt "NET SEND <domain account name> Your message goes here"

Replace the "<domain account name>" with either the name of an NT domain user account or a Windows NT/2000 computer name.

You can probably find utilities to enhance the functionality (for example, get a graphical interface) on shareware/freeware web sites.
We use one written in-house in Access 97.

I tried this and it worked - a Win 98 machine got the message. Bit awkward. Any idea of a site with a graphical interface?

Thanks

the net send will only work from NT to NT. it will not work from NT to 98.
if both users are on the network and both have access to telnet, then you can use that..
open up your telnet session connect to your server and i think, not sure but type write man or man write..let us know...

Win2k is built around most of the same kernel as NT. It also has the messenger that NT has. You should be able to send messages through net send commands...One thing you can also do, is d/l ICQ server, and run that inhouse (so to speak) between all the machines. It runs as silently as winpopup on the 98 machines, plus if you are having different people use the same machines, you can have different profiles on the machine for different ICQ numbers. All in all, it could be a real benefit. I'd try the messenger service first though, because you already have the framework inplace for it.

Thanks for the suggestion. The net send works OK. I'll take a look at ICQ.
