Wireless connection enabled but I cannot browse the internet

Hi, I am trying to access the internet through a public (holiday resort) wireless network. There is no verification required to get on this network and I can see that I am connected and I have a very strong signal. When I go to browse the internet I can't get to any sites. I have tried to ping sites and cannot. I know the wireless router is connected to the dsl because I have seen other people on the internet. This was working before for me. I tried using a linksys wireless signal expander when I was in my apartment but was still connecting to the same wireless network. Now I'm right beside the wireless router and still no joy.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Gav

Run IPCONFIG

by karlsuch In reply to Wireless connection enabl ...

Run ipconfig /all and verify that you are being assigned a correct IP address for the network. Compare it to someone who is connecting successfully. I assume yours is configured to use DHCP and is not a static address since you indicated that it worked before, but it wouldn't hurt to verify that it hasn't changed.

Encryption?

by Timbrewolf In reply to Run IPCONFIG

As Karlsuch said, an IP config will give you a few details. Most importantly, if you're getting an autoconfig IP 169.

In that case, it's likely an encrypted wireless network and you are either using the wrong network key or no network key at all.

If you do get a regular IP address (probably a 192.x) then try pinging an IP address and see if it's a DNS issue.

ping 216.109.112.135 (yahoo.com) and see if you get a response.

If you get a response on IP but not on yahoo.com, it's a DNS issue and hopefully can be fixed by:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
