Word 97 disk is full. Why?

By laserbiz ·
I have a problem with an oversized Normal.dot (1.8 meg!) I was able to pare it down to 900 kb. I am having a problem however. This occurred When I installed system works 2000 by symantec. The real problem is that after working with the Normal.dot template and creating many letters, when I try to shut down Word97, it asks if I wish to save the changes made to my normal.dot. If I answer yes, it says my disk is full. (It is not!) ( I have already deselected "allow Fast Saves" . The only way out isto say no to the changes. Now I never had a problem when the normal.dot was 1.8 meg. The problem only occurred after installing system works 2000 of which only the virus scanner is memory resident.

Can't explain why System Works would see to cause the problem, but it sounds to me like your normal.dot file has a virus--many of the W97 virii infect that file. We had continual problems with Normal.dot in my org until we deleted Normal.dot on each machine, ran Word so a new one was created, then got properties on it and made it read-only. Give it a shot.

We have experienced the same problem. This is a variant of the W97 virus. We've seen it way too often for our liking.

We've updated our antivirus software constantly & it has come back in a number of variants, they all affect the normal template & all give error messages such as "Unable to save...", "...unable to read drive...", or "...disk full...", chances are that is the warning marker of this new virus strain. Another indication that your files have the virus is not being able to view files in your home directory.

This has been particularly nasty since it comes back in so many different variations - often the day after we update our antivirus software. Diligent running of antivirus software on a regular basis will greatly improve its effectiveness & prevent problems such as this.

We have the same problem with saving excel documents. It seems that if real time monitoring is enabled in your virus scanner it clashes with the save procedure. We are using Inculan anti-virus software and when we checked with them, it appeared tobe a known issue. This seems to only happen if saving across the network. Try disabling your real time monitoring and see if it works.

Hello!

This may happen for a number of reasons but I guess this is the one...

You have created a large number of styles within your documents which forces Word to create a huge temporary file (with a similar name like ~W000001.tmp and usually under C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) which he cannot manage. My advice is ofr you to clear your TEMP directory and reduce the number of styles in your NORMAL.DOT.

Another possibility is that your document contains corrupted or invalid links. To update the fields in Word,
follow these steps:

1)Menu EDIT->Select All.
2)Press F9.

This will update any fields. If an error occurs at this point, one or more of the
fields may be invalid. It may be possible to unlink the fields (CTRL+SHIFT+F9) and
continue, or it may be necessary to delete the linked object and reinsert it.

Best wishes!

Most likely your system has a virus. If you use a good virus scanner with the most current virus DAT file it'll remove any macro virus (make sure you scan all drives and diskettes). Once they're clean - you can "write protect" the NORMAL.DOT (makeit "read-only"). Since the most common macro viruses affect that template - this should keep it safe from re-infection.
