Word 97 hyperlink to a PowerPoint file..

By MCdude ·
I have a user running Office 97 SR-2 on an NT 4.0 SP3 machine. She's using Word and has a hyperlink to a PowerPoint File (.ppt). When she clicks the link, PowerPoint opens, but in Slide Show mode (as if in .pps mode) and she is unable to print it. Same .ppt file opens fine from Explorer and even as a hyperlink from Excel. If the Word file is emailed to someone else - the hyperlink works fine. This is happening on only this one user's machine and only in Word....
I have tried all the tricks that I have up my sleeve - Maybe one of your sleeves is a bit fuller...... Thanks.

I don't know of a good answer for this. Does this person really need to access the powerpoint file via the word file. It doesn't really make sense if it is locally on their machine. I say deal with it, it is one of those quirky microsoft things.

Ok...When you create a hyperlink in Word or any other Office product (except Front Page) the application does not read the HTML code. This code is used by IE. There was no work around other than the "Edit Slides" option from Powerpoint app. It wouldappear that this is one of Microsoft's "Seamless" intergration attempts.

I advise putting the user to death at once - format the the drive, and pretend the whole incident never took place.

You know this sounds very much like some sort of file association issue. Why not check the registry for occurences of the .pps , delete them, then try the link again. If that works, obviously, re-associate the .pps to the Powerpoint executable.

Now that I look at that answer, it looks a little silly, but still, it does remind me of an association problem.

You may want to review the differences between embedding and linking the document. It might be possible that the other recipients receive an embedded PowerPoint file while your user has a link that opens the slide for editing and uses that as a efault view.

I agree with putting the user to death,,
remember though, word has it's own file associations, so even if you change it in View>File options, word's gonna do what word's gonna do...
You may want to try removing word (just add remove programs, thenadd/remove components, then remove Word, and reboot and reinstall..
Just to see if there is a difference..
sounds like one thing on one machine, that may be the only option...
