Word files cannot save to a shared drive

By spatzke ·
I have one user that tries to save a word document to the shared drive on a Novell network but gets the error "cannot save or create file" error message. If she changes the extention to .xls the file will save. If she saves the file to her local drive it will save. What do you think is the problem?

Word files cannot save to a shared drive

It appears the user has access to create a new file but not to overwrite an existing file. This is either due to a general setting on the share, a setting in the users properties or an ownership setting. These settings are manages through the Netware administrator. I don't currently have access to the Netware Administrator program so I can't tell you exactly where to go to check.

Also, there is a Known issue with Windows 98 and Word 97 (or maybe 2000) not being able to save to a share. The file can be aved to the local hard drive and then copied to the share. I believe Microsoft has fixed this problem in a patch.

Hope this helps,

Al

From Technet Q212347

CAUSE
=====

This error message occurs for one of the following reasons. See
the "What to Try" section for the resolution that applies to
your situation:

The document is open on two or more computers that are running different
operating platforms.

The Always Create Backup Copy option is turned on, with a server
or operating system that does not support long file names.

You are saving to a MAPROOT type network drive connection on a NetWare
server where spaces exist in the file or folder name.

An anti-virus program that is running on the network has the ability to
scan for macro viruses in documents in shared network folders.

On a Novell network, the AutoRecover files path is either blank or set
to a network drive.

Is excel installed on the system where she is trying to save? If that is the case then is Word installed as well, if not word may have to be installed to save it. I know this sounds weird but I have seen worst.

try checking that the file in question is not open by another User on the network...
also check the 'rights' that this user has to the network drive where the file is being saved to...

I've seen this error on our NT workstations when our users use filemanager instead of explorer. Somehow the associations in explorer and filemanager don't match which causes this error. Why? I have no idea. I just re-create both associations in filemanager and explorer. Which seems to correct the problem.
