Hi,
I have a win2000 setup as a workgroup and a win98 connected to a hub which is connected to the win2000. They can see each other on the network. The win2000 can acess files on the win98 but the win98 cannot access files on the win2000.When the win98 tries to access anything on the win2000 I get the error \\(server name)ipc$. Can anybody let me know why I would get this. Thank's in advance

You have to have a username/account setup on the W2K machine that the W98 machine can use. Basically, whatever user login you are using on the w98 machine needs to be added to the local user database on the w2k machine. Make sure you setup the account to use the same password as well, or you will be prompted to re-enter it every time you try to access the w2k machine.

hope this helps.

Mike

My guess is that you have your Win 200 machine formatted NTFS. Win 98 can't see NTFS. The FAT file system and the NTFS are not compatable

I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. This is wrong. You are accessing over the network. The filevsystems are fine. I need to sleep at home, not at work.

Mike's answer works. Create a user account on the 2000 PC that is identical to the Win98 logon. Same PWD and USERNAME. Then create a share otherwise you won't see anything. When the Win98 box opens the 2000 connection it won't be prompted for a U/P.
