XP Hanging on Shut Down

By hendos4 ·
PLEASE HELP !!!

Hi, I have a machine with windows XP Pro.

It hangs on shut down. If you restart the computer & go to shut it down it will do so straight away. but if you leave it sitting idle for more than 15 minutes with or without a screen saver running it hangs on shut down, if you are playing a game for an hour & go to shut down it hangs.
I have set power options to never & un-ticked hibernate in the power options.
I have installed XP shutdown Patch & Autoend Patch (supposed to force shut down of any running programs in the background) with no success. I am going to replace power supply next. does anyone know of a solution or can you recommend another thing to try to solve this as it starting to drive me nuts.

Are you just being impatient?

Have you tried waiting it out just to see how long it actually takes it to shut down?

Also, in the past we've experienced error messages on shut down on a few systems with Adobe Acrobat installed (not just the reader). Once we uninstall Adobe, the errors go away and the system shuts down normally. We can then reinstall Adobe and everything is fine.

So, what kinds of software do you have installed that may be causing this? Do you see any error messages at all?

If this works for you, all well and good. However, it doesn't illustrate why you are having a system hanging at shutdown. Have you checked in the Event Viewer for any clues?

Navigate to:
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

In 'Event Viewer' expand the left-hand items for 'Application' then for 'System', checking the right-hand listed times against when your computer refused to shutdown. You may find evidence listed there, for which program or utility service, was waiting for some form of input, thereby causing the bottleneck preventing shutdown from taking place.
