XP Home : No Backup ? Is This Possible?

By gernotlg ·
At my work, they have installed XP Home, without consulting with me first of course, anyway, I can't seem to be able to find the Backup utility.

As a result, i've had to set it up to backup from an old 686 running W95, using (don't laugh) the olddos version of PKZIP with span-disk option. Which is really slow over a 10Mbit Lan.

Is it possible that XP Home edition doesnt come with backup built into it? Or am I just unable to find it. It doesnt appear to be in any of the menus.

Apparently XP Pro has it built into it. Does Bill Gates think people at home don't need to backup their data or what?

If anyone knows where in XP Home I can find the backup program, and/or if anyone can confirm that XP Pro HAS it, please let me know.

Thankyou

Gernot

It should be accessible from the Start menu. Program Files>Accessories>System tools>Backup, unless of course the installers have chosen not to install it.

As it is an integral part of creating the system recovery file and floppy disk, it should be there. If not I would pose the question to "they" who installed the OS as to where it is and/or why it isn't there. XP Pro definitely has a Backup utility alive and well in System Tools.

Yeah, XP Home does NOT actually install backup for reasons only known to Microsft itself. But you can still get the backup program from the XP CD. Go to \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP on your XP CD and install from NTBACKUP.MSI. You will then have a "Backup" icon in Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
XP Pro installs backup by default
