XP keyboard problem

By wbkern ·
I have a user who is having a problem with his keyboard. When he types a 2nd letter the system doesn't respond usless he waits for 2 sec. also the "backspace" key doesn't always work.
I have run 2 antivirus programs, adaware, spybot S & D to clean the system fixed for 3 days then right back. Running the program 2nd time doesn't help. Any sug would be greatly appreciated. Bill...

Time to start over

by softcorp.us In reply to XP keyboard problem

Sounds like a persistent spyware infection with a key logger.

Fortunately, I've never had any spyware. But, from what I hear, spyware removal tools often cannot completely remove the infection.

If I were you, I would cut my losses. I would stop trying to fix the problem. I would reformat my hard drive, reinstall Windows XP, reinstall the applications, and be careful about what "data" files are copied to the new system. Also, I would not permit the user in question to use Internet Explorer. I would have him only use FireFox. IE is a doorway that is used to install spyware. So far, FireFox is no where near as vulnerable and for me it works very well.

Good luck!

Find out HW or SW

by zzy1000 In reply to XP keyboard problem

Try it in a pure DOS MODE (boot with dos disk) and XP safe mode, if same symptom, should cause by KB hadware problem. If no problem found, looks like cause by software setting or spyware/virus.

Accessibility Options

by dbucyk In reply to XP keyboard problem

More than likely it is the Accessibility Options and the use of the sticky key function.

Check to see if this is enabled.

If it isn't, then just replace the keyboard because Windows XP will automatically detect the keyboard and it will work but I had a person change the Accessiblity Options on me to make it look like I had an unresponsive keyboard when I was working part-time at Radio Shack.

Sincerely,

A+ and Network + technician

I like the windows blue screen screen saver

by jdclyde In reply to Accessibility Options

for XP, and unplug the keyboard so it looks like it is crashing, booting, and crashing again.

If you press a key it goes away like a good little screen saver (which is why I unplug the keyboard)

It is the little things in life that mean so much.

Other problem

by s3sonics In reply to Accessibility Options

My keyboard functions were swapped suddenly.
Eg. When I pressed on @, it becomes ", and vice versa.

My Hex key has become ?. Any suggestion?

check your keyboard settings

by ArthurP In reply to Other problem

Hiya,
My recommendation is that you check the keyboard settings ... it looks as though you've changed the language and keyboard settings to English(United Kingdom) - where # becomes ?, and @ becomes " - it's due to anomolies with a US design Keyboard being illogical

Upon the other issue I'd check the timings under accessibility wizard

No settings were changed

by s3sonics In reply to check your keyboard setti ...

Hi, I didn't change any settings.
It's like I'm using halfway and suddenly the keys're swapped, perhaps I pressed the shortcut that trigger the changes?

Anyway, just after I read your reply, went to see and make sure no changes on the language settings, then I clicked Cancel. Everything back to normal now. Weird!

Thanks anyway.
