    XP not talking to Win98

I just set up a P2P with four PC’s. One machine is XP and the other three are Win98. All three Win98 PC’s can see each other and two of the Win98 PC’s can see the XP. The XP can see those two Win98 PC’s but can’t see the one Win98 PC. When I powered up all four machines this morning none of them can see each other!?!?!?
    Please help!!!

      Some basic suggestions:
-try to use both TCP/IP and NetBios protocols.
-in TCP/IP properties set the same class address for all 4 computers (x.x.x.1/2/3/4) and the same netmask (255.255.255.0)
-be sure that on Win98 computers is set as default.
-all computers must have set the same workgroup
-use ping utility to see if connections works with the others computers
-to see other computers all computers must have at least one share.

For the win98 PC that could not see the XP, is it win98 or 98SE? The original win98 version had some problems with seeing other devices that went away when I upgraded to win98SE. I don’t remember specifically what it was that I did to fix it but I believe it was in the TCP/IP — NetBUI settings.

Here are some things you will want to check expanding on what the others wrote.

      1) Make sure that each computer has an individual IP Address (192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4) and all have the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0
      2) Check and make sure all computers are running NetBeui (not required but won’t hurt). To install NetBeui on XP go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q301041
      3) Make sure all computers have unique computer names.
      4) If youwant to be able to access the XP computer from the 98 machines, the XP computer must have each computer name of the other computers in its user accounts. If they aren’t there the computers will not be able to access shares.
      5) Definetly do ping tests from each computer (these can be done from command prompt. start->run->command).
      6) Check link lights on the back of each NIC card and to the hub/switch depending.
      7) Make sure all computers are on Client for Microsoft Networks.
      7) If all elsefails, remove TCP/IP and let it reinstall itself by a reboot.
