XP Pro, IE8, how to FTP

By RG11 ·
Just upgraded to IE8 and FTP doesnt work in IE8. I know I can FTP through windows explorer. How can I set up a shortcut. When I do, the FTP shortcut opens in IE8 then I get an error on the page. Is there a way to make this work without getting a new browser?

Default programs...

This is for IE8 on Vista, but I guess it very much the same on your box:
control panel - Internet settings - tab "programs" - Section Internet programs and button "Set programs"
Then wait for a while, the dialog is populated from thousands of registry entries, so it's not instantly.

Now you should have a list of default programs for file extensions. At the bottom of the list, there's a short list with different protocols, among them FTP.

By the way, on my box IE8 is handling ftp, and it works fine.

This could also be an issue with your windows firewall.
