XP Product ID Key

By honu95 ·
Hello,

I installed XP on a computer1 using the install disc of computer2 which is a different brand. I have a legit product key for computer1, but it won't activate. Is this because I used the install disc for computer2? Any way to fix this? Thank you!!

That would seem to be the issue.

You can call Microsoft have them send replacement media that is coded to your legit key for a nominal fee.

To expound on BFilm's answer.

You were probably using an OEM CD that requires an OEM product key. A retail, upgrade, or NFR key will not work with OEM media.

if there is an OEM key on the side of computer1 and you can get your hands on a buddy's copy of Windows XP OEM (that is not brand specific) you should be able to use the key on the sticker on the side of your computer.
