Well, you can try the download link under the All Products button on Microsoft's web site.
CAUTION: There are a couple of security fixes that are ONLY available in SP1. There are 3rd party solutions posted at a few XP support web sites.

I wonderabout your product key.
One of the 'features' of SP1 is a product key test that disallows downloading updates for known 'pirated' product keys.

If you are certain that your Product key is valid, you should contact Microsoft to find out why it isbeing rejected.

As to the automated running of the XP update Wizard, you need to disable automatic updates, or remove the Wizard from the list of startup items.

TheChas is right on your problem. One of the features of SP1 for XP is that it will NOT load if the product key you used to originally install XP was a pirated key, or derived from a pirated key.
There were 3 valid keys that were used to generate most of the pirated keys freely available. So, when Microsoft found this out, they put a block in SP1 so that it would not install on a system that used a key that came from these pirated keys.
So, get a valid key, THEN you can install SP1.

Here are a couple quotes from an article on the subject:
"to a list of product keys which Microsoft has blacklisted.
These few keys are used by the majority of pirates to get their bootleg copies of XP registered. If the service pack is installed on a machine using one of these keys, it will terminate the process"
