XP won’t play audio cd
Lockedby tomholt.ohio · about 17 years, 3 months ago
User has a Dell 4600 (if memory serves) running XP Pro w/SP2. Recently it stopped playing audio CDs. Reloaded driver, replaced CD drive with another new one from Dell. Still, won’t play audio. Play games and otherwise executes CDs, though. Not sure where else to turn. Any ideas?

Look at connection

You didn’t state if you have any sound when playing games so I’m assuming you don’t. You might check the cable from the drive to the sound card.

sorry, i didn’t mention it, but i do get sound for other things. windows media player gives me a message that says it doesn’t recognize the media type. it’s an off-the-shelf cd, not one that was burned
thanks, though-

What about other audio CD’s

Does it play any other audio CD’s from a different manufacturer? If it does then maybe it’s the manufacturer.
If it doesn’t, did you by chance upgrade Windows Media Player? -

The reason I asked is that the latest

version of Media Player is 11.
Were any games or other software recently installed? The reason I asked is just like zlito stated, other programs could have changed the file type association.
You might try re-installing Windows Media Player. I have not personally used MP 11 but have seen it installed on several computers and they SEEM to be functioning o.k.

some other stuff… can’t say exactly…
but real player won’t play music either. found out today that the machine can’t play dvds either. something deep down must be wrong. can’t figure it out.
i’ll try downloading and installing Media Player 10.
i don’t think that’s going to help, though -

See if this matches your problem. It looks like it does. The link also provides a workaround. I really didn’t look at the workaround though.

In reply to XP won’t play audio cd
Check that the audio wire connection from the back of your cd player is installed right on the sound card.

When an audio CD
by zlitocook · about 17 years, 3 months ago
In reply to XP won’t play audio cd
Is in the drive open my computer to see if the drive shows an audio cd? Some programs will take over the CD player and you will have to unassociate the program from the drive.
Like when you load Real player it will associate itself with all media.-
