XPpro to XPMediapro Remote Desktop Using

By artie8591 ·
Using articles on this site, XP help & Microsoft site, I have been trying to connect my work computer (Windows XP Pro) to remotely run programs from my home computer (Windows XP Media Pro).

For something that seems so easy from the instructions I've read, I am muddled and confused.

I have DSL access on both machines (Static at work "have the IP address - Dynamic at home "have a way to confirm current IP address"), have applied all the steps and the work computer does not find the home computer or I get a message that says maybe it is busy-contact admin or try later.

I would truly appreciate specific steps with exact details and possible "missed steps" for removing the mess I have made so far (users, passwords, names)...and implementing remote desktop successfully.

Thank You!
Lori

1. Can you ping your home computer from work? Can you ping your work compuetr from home?
2. Is your XP firewall disabled?
3. is you home or work router blocking any ports? You need port 3389 open for the desktop to work.

I am assuming you have enabled remote desktop on your home comptuer already. However, can you verify that you can actually use it locally. I.e. can you have another locally connected computer attemt to use the remote desktop on your home computer. You need to isolate if the problem is in your internet access (routers, firewalls, etc..) or just home computer setup.

Try this link as well (retype it if it wraps):
