Y2K readiness check for PC

By joeblo ·
What do I need to do to be assured that my PC at home will be Y2K Ready
Hardware and Software wise. I have a Pionex pentium PC built in
Dec. 1997. I'm running Win95.

You can download a small utility that will check your bios for any problems. I have used the one at http://www.nstl.com/html/nstl_ymark2000.html
It seems to do the job.
As far as your software goes, I don't know any better way then start checking out your software manufacturers web sites. I've found that most will have some comment on Y2K.
On my machine at home I just set the date to 11:59 New years Eve and waited to see what would happen. Take into account that I don't have any date sensitive software on that machine (accounting, etc.)

I wish I was in the backup generator biz this year!

YO JOE, I HAVE BEEN DOING Y2K UPDATES ALL YEAR, AND I HAVE FOUND A GREAT WEBSITE THAT WILL TEST YOUR PC FOR Y2K RIGHT ON LINE WHILE YOU WAIT! WWW.MCAFEE.COM AND PICK THE MCAFEE CLINIC. IT WILL ALSO FINE TUNE YOUR PC. AT MICROSOFT.COM, YOU CAN ORDER A Y2KCD THAT WILL TEST YOUR SOFTWARE FOR COMPLIANCE. THEY ALSO HAVE A SOFTWARE COMPLIANCE LIST. I HOPE THIS WILL HELP MAKE YOUR Y2K AN EASY EFFORT. DNELSON@ABTS.NET

There are several places on line that you can download a y2k test & as #2 suggested MCAFEE has one that will test your system while online. As #1 suggested check the web sites on your software. There is also a y2k patch for win95 on microsofts web site.It will update your command.com & win.com files.
Hope this helps.

lots of places have a y2k check but what are you checking and how is it really handled?
The Real time clock in a system is a pre progammed circuit you cannot "fix" it but most software calls the OS so fix the OS
for step 1. Step 2 fix the bios becausesome software and the os make calls to the bios. Step 3 Some software may make a read directly from the RTC Can't fix that but any calls to those routines can be headed
off at the pass by a device driver that processes the data before the applicationsees it and "fixes" the output. step 4
use software that will handle four digit dates and use four digit dates. Caveats are that enough "fix it" routines being called may alter the actual times so that dates calculated successivly may give errors as to the correct day of the week and some soft even though it makes it past the boarder cannot get the leap days correctly some y2k compliance cheking software check several leap years to make sure the machine handles leap years ok. Yes its possible that th

4 what appear to be easy steps :
1. Check the bios either with software or contact the motherboard manufaturer.
2. Patch Win95 You can download the patch from Microsofts webpage and it's about 2.2 MB
3. Verify all software, usually by contacting the manufaturer.
4. Check all data files that have dates in them. (For example, excel files)

This is usually time consuming but it can be done.
