and I'm finding it offensive ....

by eaglewolf In reply to You have a choice, Eaglew ...

..that my response won't be seen. It's being moved 'offline.' Censorship? What I said is true - we have dangers far closer to us than the NSA.

There are so many things that are NOT a choice .. the surveilance at just about any marketplace you walk into, the pervert walking down the street with Google Glass .. sorry, that's not a 'fun toy,' it a major hazard to privacy and security, but it's being marketed as 'family fun.'

So .. do I stay censored? Removed from the conversation? If so, it's a denial of my right to free speech.

Please explain

Why is this "a denial of (your) right to free speech?" Explain your reasoning for saying such a thing.

if you go to the comment above yours in the last thread and click reply there, it'll post your reply underneath the last post. I do sometimes, that way I don't get pushed off into the "water"

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I think the peeps here might be more sane!! lol ....

Once you're 'water coolered' are you no longer able to post either in the thread or any other articles? Is it a life sentence?

Geeez .. in all the years I've been reading TR, the last few months have almost convinced me it's not worth it anymore.

What's your take?

Purpose of 'Take Offline' isn't censorship

by CharlieSpencer In reply to out of curiosity ...

It's to keep discussions from getting beyond a manageable number of sublevels. If you don't like it (and few do), you can continue to post to the original discussion. Just reply to the previous post at the next level up.

"So .. do I stay censored? Removed from the conversation? If so, it's a denial of my right to free speech"

Like so many others in this Internet era, you're screaming censorship where it doesn't exist, based on an incorrect understanding of the concept. There is no censorship here because there never was freedom of speech here in the first place. Neither you nor anyone else has a 'right to free speech' on someone else's private publication. Freedom of speech means you're free to say what you wish without interference, but you're responsible for your own publication and distribution. It does not obligate anyone else to provide you a platform or audience. TR can't shut down a web site YOU own and operate, but they don't have to publish from you (or I) if they don't like it.

"There are so many things that are NOT a choice .. the surveilance at just about any marketplace you walk into, ..."

So you claim a right to say what you want, but would deny a private business from operating as it wishes? If you disapprove, you DO have a choice: you're free to take your money elsewhere.

Being taken offline is nonsensical

by AV . In reply to out of curiosity ...

As Charlie said, the purpose is to prevent too many sublevels in a discussion. Before TR's fabulous "upgrade" a couple of years ago, a thread used to display a message "you have reached the maximum depth of something or other" when you tried to go beyond the amount of sublevels allowed in a discussion. Someone at TR decided the "take offline" thing made more sense (duh).

You can still go back and post your comment at a higher level. TR is still good, but you have to work around the bugs.
