      Introduction

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi.
I am Yuvaraj Pandian T, Affectionately known as Yuvi Panda T, or simply Yuvi.

I am 14, a 10th Grade Student facing the daunting Public Board Exams in this Year.

I am also a Hobbyist Developer, with around 5 years of Hobbyst Development Experience.

I love VB, VB.NET, .NET, C#, ASP .NET, SQL and Web Designing and I am off Developing Whenever I can get away from my School.

I am quite succesful at School, with somewhat around 90% in my marks, and a pretty good name with my Teachers, and Not so successful with my Friends, due to my Geekiness 🙂

And This Blog is maybe the only way for me to vent out my feelings.

I dedicate this Site to My Dad, Who helped me to develop a logical and rational Mind. I also dedicate this to my ever-helping Friend, Mentor and Cousing, Sudar Muthu. He Introduced me to Computers and English.

You will find articles on Geekiness, My Personal Experiences, Programming Topics, and everything I can think of.

Thank You Very Much for viewing this Blog, which I though would be never viewed by anyone but me :).

      Project BaBIE

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
While Reading Some Stuff about the new FireFox Revolution, I got an Idea. Mozilla is OpenSource, but it takes a lot of time to Make Your own Browser based on the Gecko Engine. But IE, on the other hand, has got a nifty Little WebBrowser Control, that has all the layout features of Internet Explorer and requires almost no Code to activate.

So, as a direct Competietion to FireFox, I started Building my Own WebBrowser based on the MSHTML (That is the IE Layout Engine) using .NET. It’s got all the UI Nicites of FireFox, and Some more. So, If Any of You are like me, Drawn towards FireFox for it’s UI, Please Mail Me and we will Join Together and Challenge Fire Fox.

PS I am searching for a Single-Syllable Name to the Browser. I first tryed Herodetus, then switched to Aristotle and Now, I am thinking of Eagle. If you have any good Suggestions for the Name, please Mail me.

      PPS

By the Way, Project BaBIE means Project Build a Better Internet Explorer!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I started with Project BaBIE(Build a Better Internet Explorer) and started trying to list out all that I would want. By the way, if you don’t know what Project BaBIE is, please see my Previous Post.

So, I started with the following:

      • Tabbed Interface
      • Skinning
      • Permanent Search Bar with Google as default Engine.
      • Disabling ActiveX
      • One Click FileSave
      • One Click ImageSave
      • Download Manager
      • One Click History Clear
      • Option to have No History Recorded
      • Parental Control.
      • Built-in RSS Processing

That’s all I could come up with in about 10 minutes time. If you have any Suggestions for more Features, please please Mail Me. Also If you can spare some time, please lend a Helping hand to me.

Thank You for viewing my Blog.

      Today’s Progress

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I started work on Project BaBIE after School and I was able to develop for around 3 Hours. In that Short Span of Time, I was able to Implement Some of the Following:

      • Localizable User Interface using XML Language Packs
      • Address Bar
      • Google Search Bar(It Works!)
      • Gradient Panels (I got lots of Help from Mark Jackson from The CodeProject WebSite)
      • Disabled ActiveX (It Works Too!)

Now, I was able to Accomplish all this stuff in about 2:30 Hours. If I can continue at this pace, I could’ve Got a Demo Version Up and Running by Sunday, but Unfortunately, I am Leaving on Vacation for 2 Days with my Family. So the Demo Version is Postponed to Next Sunday. Sorry For That.

But, I could get more features into the demo By Next Sunday Though!

Thanks to my Bro. Sudar for all his Encouragement, without which I would’ve deleted the last two posts and abandoned Project BaBIE. It’s due to him that my Project BaBIE is alive Now.

Thanks, and I should be able to post something again in around 2 Days Time.

      Mono the Monkey

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
Since I have Relocated my Projects to another Blog, I can focus on Topic Here..

      The Mono Project

The Mono Project is an Open-Source Initiative to create a .NET Implementation for Linux, so that .NET Applications can be Cross-Platform, much in the Same way as Java is. It has been going on For Quite some Time.

If this Effort Works, then Java’s Promise of “Write Once, Run Anywhere“, (which turned out to be “Write Once, Debug Everywhere, Run it Wherever it didn’t Crash“), might come true for .NET.

They’ve already almost Comleted ADO .NET and the Very Bases. Check out their Site for more information.

BTW Mono Means Monkey in Spanish, but why they choose the Name escapes me. If you know, please leave a comment.

      Thanks, and Be Right Back…

      ASP .NET in Linux!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again..

Mainsoft has got a cool, free Visual Studio Add-in Called Grasshoper, that will enable us to build cool ASP.NET apps that Run on Apache TomCat!

This is done by Translating the MSIL(Microsoft Intermediate Language, which is the Language of .NET) to Jave Bytecodes to Run on top of the J2EE Framework.

Until Mono, Becomes Available, we can atleast host ASP.NET Apps on Linux, since Apache is more Cheaper to Setup than IIS.

Visit Mainsoft’s Site for More Information about Grasshopper.

They’ve Even Got a Tutorial that will get You started in Building ASP.NET Stuff for Linux.

      Thanks, And Be Right Back….

      Netscape falls for IE

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

I was just plain Surprised when I read about Netscape Navigator 8. The Surprise was that, It was going to Use the Internet Explorer Layout Engine!

Netscape Navigator, a Direct Competietor to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and the first succesful Commercial Browser, has Started using it’s Main Competietor’s Software for it’s core Engine!

      That was Unbelievable, But True.

But they’ve also got an optional, another Rendering Engine called Gecko, the one used by FireFox and Mozilla.

You can Read More about it and Download Netscape 8 Here.

      Thanks and Be Right Back….

      IE Fights Back

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Now, Although Internet Explorer is still the Market Leader in Browsers, Other Browsers, Especially FireFox, are challenging IE’s Position. So, If IE dosn’t Innovate and Answer these Competing Browsers, Exactly What Happened to Netscape Navigator will happen to Internet Explore(Everyone will know it, but none will use it!)

Therefore, Microsoft has announced that IE 7 will ship prior to Windows Longhorn, so as to stay competetive. It will defenitely have all the Nicities of FireFox and others, plus a lot more, so as to Answer Competietion.

You can find more Information at the Internet Explorer Blog at MSDN.

      Thanks and Be Right Back….

      XP Code? Really? Unbelievable…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Have You ever Wanted To Take a look at the Wonderful Source Code that has Made Windows What it is Today?

      • The Source that Made Windows 2000 Stable?
      • The Source that Made the Windows XP UI so Cool?
      • The Source that Made Windows 2003 Great?
      • The Source that Made Windows CE So Interesting?
      • The Source that Made the CLI tick?

Wish No More, for Microsoft is Releasing these Source Codes?

I can never know how this happened, but if you happen to go To Microsoft.com, You will Find no hint of the Source Code…

But, only when we search for the Shared Source Licence, We get several cool Topics.

Microsoft has offered a whole slew of Source Code for a lot of products. You can find the Products for which Source is available here.

Some of those Products for which Source is available include:

      • Windows XP
      • Windows 2000
      • Windows 2003 Server
      • Windows CE
      • Windows CE Premium
      • A C#/JScript/CLI Runtime Implementation
      • WTL
      • And much More…..

You have to Sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and a Number of Other Aggrements to Get the Source, But it is Free!

I don’t know what the Reaction will be from the Open-Source Community for this Shared Source Licence, but I am sure that they will Welcome it………….

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      The Two Poles Meet….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

When Will Teh North Pole Meet the South Pole ? A good Student of Geography Would Answer “Never”.

      But, Software is Proving otherwise.

The Two Poles of Software, Microsoft and Sun, Seem to be moving Together, Atleast on Paper.

According to a Press Release from Microsoft, Both the Companies are Moving towards Collaborating With each other.

As a Part of this Agreement, Microsoft has paid $1,950 Million Dollars To Sun Microsystem, To settle all the Legal Disputes between them.

And Part of the Agreement also Includes “Collaboration between .NET and Java”. If it were to happen, I would be More than Pleased.

But, Like Every Cloud has a Silver Lining, This Agreement has a Negative Effect too. Yes, Microsoft Will No Longer support the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine… But, The Support is extended upto 31 December, 2007, for “Smooth Transfer of People from Microsoft’s JVM”

More Details can be found here.

So, What Next ? Maybe, Apple’s Mac OS X will Run on a PC?

      Another .NET Implementation!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

      Good News For .NET guys!

.NET might be moving Slowly towards Being Cross Platform. DotGNU is another Project Geared Towards That. DotGNU, along with Mono (
See My Previos Post about Mono)
are Moving Towards making .NET run on Linux, Unix, Solaris and Ofcourse Windows.

The Windows Forms Component of DotGNU seems to be Complete, Since they are Showing Some ScreenShots of .NET Apps Running in a Variety of Operating Systems.

Since Mono and DotGNU seem to be Pretty Stable, I am thinkin of Installing Linux on my System to Try them out. I am thinking of Mandrake Linux, But if you think otherwise, You are Welcome to Leave Comments.

Currently, the C# compiler is quite Stable and VB.NET and J# Compilers are UnderWay. U can find More Information Here.

If these Projects Come True, We can Silence those Java People and Make our Applications Run Anywhere. And Java’s Promise of “Write Once, Run (and Debug!) Everywhere” Will Come True by .NET..

If u know C or Gtk or C# and have some spare Time, Please Volunteer to work with DotGNU or Mono to make them Complete faster.

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Microsoft’s Bad Move…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Well, I had A Previous Post about the Microsoft-Sun Settlement, But as i read more into it, I felt something Really Really New..

Microsoft Had Paid Sun around 2 Billion Dollars to sun, To settle Legal Disputes and Interoperate. And that Begs the Question: What did sun have so much that Microsoft had to give it such a Large Amount ?

I like most MS supporters, Would’ve Liked Sun to wither away, after it began to run on a Loss. But, MS kept it alive. Why?

I can’t Seem to get it. If you can, Please Leave a Comment or Mail Me.

      Beats FireFox Hands Down…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

I have been Using FireFox for SomeTime Now, and know It’s quite a Good Browser.

But, One Fine Day, as i was browsing around http://www.Download.com, I just Bumped into some really strange Statistics. I was looking through the Browsers Section, Expecting FireFox to be at the Top Downloaded, But to my Surprise, I found a Browser called Avant, which has been downloaded more than 11 Million Times. That’s more than 3 Times FireFox was downloaded, which is around 3 Million.

So, I just Checked out Avant, Which is based on the IE Engine and is a small, smaller than FireFox 3.1 MB Download. And I instantly became a Great Fan of Avant. It’s Just so Beautiful and cool. The UI is really Great. And Good Notifications too.

Infact, I am writing this Post on Avant. You can find more about It’s features and Download it at http://www.avantbrowser.com/. I am a convert and Find Avant Much Much more cooler than FireFox.

All those FireFox fans out there, Please Give Avant a Try. You’ll surely appreciate it.
      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I have been a Great Fan of Mac OS X, mostly for its VERY cool UI. I have always Earned for such an UI in Windows and with Windows XP, My Wish is fulfilled.

I just stumbled upon http://www.getskinned.org and they just got a VERY Large collection of FREE skins for Windows XP. I said Skins not Themes.

Applying them just Changes the Look of your System. For Example, I have the Looks of Mac OS X Tiger in my System, By Using this Skin. Everything is Different. The Start Menu is replaced with an Apple Icon and all my Title Bars change to Apple Style. All My Buttons go Mac Style and even my scroll bars.

Inshort, This is a great thing and Would make even Seeing windows XP a rather Cool Experience.

BTW, to use the Skins, You have to download and execute this Thing First. It’s free and is not Dangerous. Just Ignore those File Protection Warnings when you Run it, and WOW, Your System is Transformed.

If you find any really Cool Skins on this Site or any Other Site, Please Leave me a Comment here. And Performance with these Skins on is the Same without them.

So, What are You Waiting For ? Go Get Skinned.

Some of you might’ve noticed I’ve been away from Active Blogging for about a Month. That’s Because I have Mid Term Exams running! And Tomorrow is the Last One. First Time after Four Years I did Tamil well……

And, As I was reading my Cousin Sudar’s Blog Sometime ago, He had an Article about a Girl called Arfa. She is from Pakistan, and an MCAD. And what’s amazing about that is that She is JUST 9 Years Old! Read that Post yourself.

And, There was also a Very Interesting Comment on that Post by one of My Cousin’s Friend called Fred. He Just said why Don’t I Take up MCSD !

Maybe, I can. I really can’t decide about it till my Dad’s had a Conversation with my Cousin. I am not worried about Cracking that Exam. This is not the first nor the Last one I should. Every Exam I face in school has Trained Me up. And, Maybe, I can. And I am going to make it, It Must be before February 2006. You Know Why ? Find Out 😉

And, Thanks Fred, for that. I can’t link You, Since you didn’t give any Contact Info there and If it’s really true that You read my Blog, Why Don’t you Leave a Comment here ?;)

The Probabality for Exam 70-306 is 80% and So, it is more probable. If any of you people have any suggestions to give me, I’d be pleased to hear them.

      School Computer Science Exhibit….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
Today, It was announced that the Annual School Computer Science Exhibiton would be held on 27th of August. Last Year, I won the Second Prize and this Year, I was looking forward to the First prize.

I confirmed that 10th Students are eligible to participate and got together my group which has been planning for this for the past Month. We Decided on 5 Projects, of which 2 Will Have to be Built by me on .NET.

But, it was only after getting home that I realized that My Prized Installation of VS.NET 2005 Beta 1 Has Expired:(. I tried Re-Installing it, but, it didn’t work.

I tried Web Matrix too, But, it didn’t have Intellisense and I can’t bear to work with it after working in VS.NET 2005.

I am in a real dilemma now, about what to do. I have to do that 2 projects in .NET and I don’t have an IDE!:(.

If you people have any Ideas for me, please Leave Me a Comment.

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      The Rain….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
Many of you might’ve heard of the Lashing Rains in Mumbai. Record rainfall of the Century. It swept away Property, Lives and the Aspirations of Many….

And One among the many was the Indian Team for the Imagine Cup finals at Japan. They had worked Day and Night for the Past 7 Months and managed to get into the Imagine Cup Finals, and their Flight was Cancelled Due to the Rain!

I got this Report from Reza, a Microsoft Student Champ. Read his Post Here, about the Rains and how the Flight was Cancelled. It seems, Rains are always an Obstacle for indians, wether it be Cricket Matches or Imagine Cups…..

Don’t worry guys, We’d crack it up next Year….

And As for the Surprise, it’s coming in the Next Post…..
      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

Thank God they made it and Hope they do win!

I was in contact with some Student Champs, Namely Sunil Jagadish, Reza and Sharath. Reza has told me Yesterday that it has been Confirmed and Official that I am a Student Champ Now!

I am very much Excited and thanks to you people for this.

My Dad too is Excited and atleast now, I can give him one Reason Justifying my Access to the Internet and also, my 5 Year long Involvement with Computers:)

      My Projects….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Our School Projects have been Confirmed. I am doing 5, of which 2 are in .NET, fully developed by Me. One is an ASP.NET E-Commerce Application and the other one is a Multiplayer Chess, Voice and Chat Application for LAN.

Since, As I have already mentioned, I am not having VS.NET, so, I am using Sharpdevelop for the the Chess Application. It’s pretty much an OK IDE, but dosn’t come any close to VS.NET.

And, as for ASP.NET, I am still in a Dilemma. I tried WebMatrix, but it’s lack of Intellisense is hindering me. If any of you have any Idea about what to do, please Leave a Comment here……

And, I have also got some other Project Ideas that won’t do for the Exhibit, but are good nonetheless. One, for example, is enabing the Virtual Folders feature of Windows Vista in Windows XP and others.

And By the Way, the Name Vista looks much much better than Longhorn;)

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      School Status….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Blogging after about a Week, I am a bit more relieved. Yesterday, I managed to Get the Visual Web Developer Express Edition installed in my system. So, one of my projects is OK. Right Now, I am working on the Toyz Online E-Commerce Store and enjoying .NET….

But, the other Chess Project is facing problems. Although I finished everything in the Application except the Remoting Part, The Hub at the School didn’t work when I tried it today. So, I asked the Computer Science Teacher there to look into it and get That Working. So, I am looking for a Quick Backup Project to Replace Chess, if, as Usual, I am Unlucky and the Hub goes out cold;)

So, If any of you people have any sparks of Idea, just leave me a Comment……

      School Status…….Again….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I am in Total Chaos now, after the Hub Disaster. One of my .NET Projects was Smashed, since We can’t have Network Multiplayer without a Network!

So, I was using the Super-Cool StumbleUpon Extension for FireFox, and was Stumbling my Way through the Web, in the way finding some really really really really Useful and cool Stuff.

One Such thing is an Opensource Planatorium Software, Celestial. I might even get around to putting it up through a projecter for the exhibit!

And, as for the other one, I am thinking of doing a Number Mind-Reader Trick/Game, with .NET/Flash. If I get around to implementing it, I’d surely Blog it.

All these things are driving me mad. All the 10th Standard School Pressure, Shouts at home and the Exhibit Pressure, coupled with my Depression, are driving me Really Mad……….

      School School School……

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
School Mayhem is starting again. Quartyearly exams are just a Month away, and We’ve got MarchPast Practice for the Sports Day, and the Computer Science Exhibit. And, On top of that, I’ve been asked to do a Power Point Presentation in Tamil!

Luckily, All my 7 Computer Science Projects are almost over, and I am now learning a bit of CEL Script to modify and Create new Scripts for Celestia. I have convinced my School Authorities to lend me a Projector, a Whole ClassRoom, Permission to Make My System go there, and a 256 MB of Extra RAM! It’s been Unbelievable, the CSE Head just fell for it and just told me he’d get me whatever I want!

Hope it all goes well, and I get the 1st Prize. Last Time, I got 2nd…….

And, I am spending my free time while others are in March Past Practice to learn CEL Script. I sorely Miss Objects in CEL Script, and hope they make it a bit more object oriented…..

And, BSNL has announced Free Downloads from 2:00 AM to 8:AM! And, thank god they did, for some of the textures for Celestia are pretty large, around 200 MB. And, I’ve been an Early Riser ever since 15th August!

And, If you have any suggestion for me to download, just leave me a comment….

      Back Online….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
Now, I am back online, and free and a bit more Relaxed, after almost a month of Really Really Really Really Heavy Headaches.

Now, You too would have that, If you were to have 7 Computer Science Projects & 1 Tamil Project, after trying to Print out all the Administrative Scoring Sheets, Project Lists and all that Stuff for the Exhibit from a Laser Printer that printed only one page before having to be Switched off and ofcourse, Lots of Maths Homework & Study Pressure….

But, Now, all of that has ended. It was all over on Saturday, and all my Projects were a Success….

And, I am also getting quite nice for all My Efforts. 8 Certificates with an O, Six A+s & an A, If there were to be an overall Championship, I am pretty Sure I’d get it……

And, I too learnt a Lot of things in the Meantime. For Example, Designing the School Exhibit Invite taught me a lot of Photoshop. And, Learning CELX Script for Celestia taught me a New Programming Language : Lua, and taught me to code in Notepad…..

But ofcourse, It’s not all over yet. I might have some days of Peace, before the Quartyearly Exams start off….

And, Next Sunday is my Karate Grading, & I am going to be a Green Belt! Go Figure…..

Now, I’d hope they don’t ask Stuff I don’t know at the Grading, so, I don’t have to be embarrassed infront of the Crowd. Nevertheless, I have practiced all those Common Ones, though I missed most of the Classes for my Projects….

And Now, I am thinking of My Next Project……. Hoping to get some good Ideas. If you have some, please leave me a comment….
      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Hi Again,

Yesterday was Sports day, and our House won after 7 Years! What a Record!

And, the interesting thing was, We won none of the Level-wise Championships (Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Seniors, etc…), but we won the Overall cup! Beats me how we did it…

But, in the end, we won by over a Fifty points. We had some Celebrations on the Track, but ofcourse, I could’ve joined in if only I wasn’t so Dumb I couldn’t run 75 m without dropping out cold………….:(

And, the best thing is, I get today off! Hope to put it to some good use…….

      Next Project ?

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Maybe, this post should belong to my other Projects Blog, but, i was a Bit Lazy to post it there.. Besides, many of you who know this Blog may not know that one….

So, My Next Project. As you know, I am a Student Champ, and, I belong the the StudentChamp Yahoo Group. One of the Recent Posts there, by Sriram Krishnan, was about how, the OSS guys are programming Greats, and we MS Technologists are not that hard into it. Simply put, he stated that OSS Guys were much more Hardcore Programmers than Us.

After Reading it for, maybe 3 Times, I realized it was True. I couldn’t get a bit of Code that went into any GPL Thing. Yet, those OSS People Created Them.

The Bottom Line was, OSS Guys were KickAss Programmers, while we are not. And, If we, the MS Community, is to get to Compete with the OSS Guys, we have to become KickAss Programmers.

So, that Post, Changed my Next Project. It Was Going to be a School Management System, but then, after reading that Post, I wanted to do something Innovative. Something Nobody Had Done Before. Something, that was utterly Cool. So, I stopped that School Management System….

Now, I have some Top Listed, Innovative Ideas, Which I dreamed up while waiting for the Sports Day. Top Two are :

      • Riddle’s Diary (Name Likely to Change, But any Harry Potter Fan Should be able to get it)
      • List-Server

Now, It’s already Late, and Dad’s Shouting a hell out of Me for not Studying, and I hope I can get up early Enough Tomorrow to post More Details, Ofcourse in my Projects Blog😉

P.S. I looked up the Meaning of KickAss, and it meant Efficient on Dictionary.com. So, No offence intended, and if it offends anyone, pleae leave me a Comment…

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Next Project…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

So, I’ve decided to go hard at my Next Project, amidst heavy preperations for Quartyearly Exams.Hope to get into the Top 3 on the Quartyearly Exams…

But, then, My Next Projects! I suppose, it’s gonna be Riddle’s Diary. If you STILL don’t know What Riddle’s Diary is, I suppose you should find it in WikiPedia. Or, Better Still, you could just buy Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Find it out Yourself…

Ok, so, Riddle’s Diary is a Magically Enchanted Object, that can think of it’s own and communicate with others who write to it. But, ofcourse, in the End, it tries to destroy Harry, but thats a different Story. Guess you’d have to read that Entire book to get it right. So, I reccomend it…

So, this Program, is an AI program, much like the famed Psychologist, Eliza. It depends much more on Stored Replies based on Keywords. So, maybe, if you want a Taste of How it will be like, just try Eliza. OK ?

And, I am gonna use Flash for the Front-End, and .NET to do the crunching. So, I am also looking forward towards learning a whole lot of stuff, such as Regexps, Flash Actionscript, and ofcourse Improving my C# and VB.NET Skills….

And, If you have anything to ask me, please do so.

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Wohooo Bohhooo Green Belt!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Now, Today was Karate Belting Day. I am proud to announce that I have graduated from Nana Kyu to Rok Kyu. And, that, in layman’s terms, it means I left Blue Belt to become a Green Belt. It was quite something, you know, since, I practiced only for 2 Months of the prescribed 4 Months, and I stilll Managed to make it! Boho!

And, I quite like the Technical Name for the Green Belt. It sounds a lot like Rock You, Rok Kyu. And, Nana too sounds cool. And, We’d be having that Ninjak or Jinjack, or Ninja (I am still not sure), which is that Black colored Chained thing that Bruce Lee Hits People with…Whoa!

Well, I couldn’t get any Pics of the Grading, but, hope to get some of My Belt…..

      Learning to Start….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
So, I am going to start with Riddle’s Diary. It’s quite a big Task, but, Since I know How to do it and Why I am doing it, it will be pretty easy…

But, I think I’d have to get quite used to Regular Expressions if i want to do Riddle’s Diary. That, would be the Most Important Part, Matching User Input to Keywords….

So, I decided to do another Mini-Project while working on Riddle’s Flash UI. That, will be eBookShelf, for organizing, Indexing and Searching through your Large eBook Collection (I have a large one, and atleast, it will be useful for me).

So, that would put me in touch with Regular Expressions, while I construct the UI of Riddle’s Diary in Flash and Build it’s Data Files with XML.

And, I am sorry, to say, I’d have to wait for the Quartyearly Exams to finish before doing this, since Dad’s already almost mad about my Computer Obsessedness…..

But, Hope to complete it As Soon as Possible…

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Hi Again,

I have started Riddle, though I was planning to get started on eBookShelf. That’s because, I’ve gotta find some library to read PDFs, while I don’t need any for Riddle’s Diary…

So, here I start. As Usual, I am starting on the Back-End First. The XML based Data Files prove to be good enough. And, I’ve got the Designs ok and the Object Model Finished….

      Hi Again,
      Quartyearly Exams are
      very very close
at hand : Next Tuesday, infact. And, So, I am gonna do what I usually do with exams : Retreat into a shell, study Day and Night, revise everything, and forget everything at the Exam;) No, the Last part was a bit madeup;)

And, Ofcourse, I was never good At Drawing(Both Programatically and By Hand;), I hope atleast to make my Cockroaches look like Cockroaches, unlike like Baloons like last time;). And, this time, I
      Think
I maybe a bit Better prepared for Tamil than last time, but still…..

It’s really hard, you know. You’ve all experienced It, and, have gone through It, but, It’s really hard for me. I Study hard and burn a lot of Midnight Oil and get around 89-90%, only to be grilled by Dad for having another guy who got more marks than me:( [Sigh….]

But, good news is, that after the Exams are over, We’re going for a 5 Day Tour of Mysore, Coorg and Bangalore! 🙂 It’s the first time I am going with my Friends, and, also, the First Time I am going out of Chennai! Hope to make a great day of it…

But Before that, I have quartyearly….

      Exams!

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Today was Biology Exam. I somehow evaded most of the Diagrams, though my Nervous System of Cockroach looked like a Shield with a Sword on it and my Bell Jar looked like an overturned Bucket;)

And, it was backbreaking work. Once Tamil is finished on 17th, I would have absolutely no problems…

And, amidst thinking in the Exams, random yet cool Ideas pop up to me. I got several today while trying to determine whether Erepsin is produced in the Stomach or Large Intestine. I would blog about them as soon as I can…..

And, Congrats go to Sudar, my cousin, for completing his First PodCast. Keep Coing, Brother!

      Back to Abnormal..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Here I am, back again, after another Round of NEST. Ofcourse, you’d know full form of NEST if you were to Read Harry Potter Front-to-Back Several times…

And, I did my exams alright. My Tamil was a lot better, and I made good swigs at Maths I and II, though missing Perfection. I got good stuff at Physics and Chemistry, though my Physics Correcter later remarked that my Waveform diagrams were unlike any he had seen before….

And, Biology went a bit good too. Escaped most Diagrams, but, was caught by two, pretty simple ones. First, was two bell Jars, which I screwed up in such a way that, they were unlike any I had seen before. And, the other one was the Nervous System of Cockroach, which looked a lot like an overturned Wand or Sword put on a Shield….

And, English was a lot good. Rumour is that I got 93 in my English I, which is supposed to be a Good Record, especially from the one who Corrects it, who has openly said

“I will not Give Full Ten Marks for a Shakespeare Essay, even If they were Written By Shakespeare come alive…..”

And, so, 93 was a big surprise, but it is still a Rumour….

And, So, It was quite a good one, but Dad’s told me that, If I don’t get into the First Rank this Time, then, The Plug would be pulled on the Internet Connection, and probably my Computer Would be sold outt for a Cheap Rate:(

And, Window’s giving me a bit of Trouble, and is not Connecting to the Internet. Then, ofcourse, a Good Question would be how I am writing this. That’s possible, since I am on Linux Right Now!

Yeah, I am writing this Post in Debian Knoppix LiveCD Linux, on the Konqueror Browser. Quite Nice, I must say. If only it supported .NET, Photoshop, VS.NET, MS Office………

I know it is a bit tiresome to read blogs with Long Posts, but bear with me for one last Post. I have created one more Blog, after the One Last Time. Just visit it, if you seem to have time and have nothing to do…..

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

So, Tomorrow Night, I am off By Train to Mysore. I am in Mysore for a day, Coorg for 2 Days, and Bangalore for half a Day. Then I come back…

It seems I’d get a Reliance Cell Phone Borrowed, and a Camera Borrowed, and an MP3 Player Borrowed…. It seems even My Travel Bag is borrowed…:(

And, I’d be back at the 1st of October, and will try to borrow a scanner to get the pictures of my borrowed Camera to the Web;)

And, Next Month is gonna be Exciting, with all those Exam Results, and most importantly, the Children’s Day Competietions at the end of the month….

I am back from the Tour! Well, Really, I was back yesterday morning, but, my Eyes were really ready enough only now. I slept for around 21 hours, with yesterday and today combined, since I slept only around 3 hours during the Tour….

Well, It was a Nice tour, barring the Fact that My Borrowed Cell-Phone Battery Burst due to overcharging and my Borrowed Camera stuck when I had a Peacock with full Plume display right infront of Me, and I soaked wet for half an hour in pouring Rain in Bangalore…

I gave the Films to be developed yesterday morning, before lapsing into a sleep at around 1 in the afternoon, only to wake at around 10 in the morning today…….

Well, Am feeling a bit sleepy even now, so, suppose I’d get back with more some time later……

Yeah, And Dad promised me one more 80 GB HDD or 256 MB More of RAM, but I have a hard Time Choosing, so, if You guys could help me decide, just leave a comment…

And, Thanks to all those Souls who prayed for me and who were responsible for this….

Why Tamil is not my Favorite Language…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Well, have you experienced Carpel-Tunnel Syndrome ? I have.. And, I am continuing to have that, or atleast that’s what I think, since My hands have lately begun to shake a lot while drawing, adding to my already difficult problem of drawing….

But, what can be worser than having to use Insert Symbol on Word to Type Out a 10 Page Document full of Tamil ? And, after that, Try to beat your head against the Wall as you try to format it to resemble a Answer Paper….. Dosn’t improve one’s temperment, I should say…

I have to do that, in which I have absolutely No Interest, and apparently, None of my Classmates had shown any Interest. But, that Tamil Teacher’s exact Translated Words as he gave me the paper were

“Because Many of You have shown lots of Interest in the Preperation of a Model Answer Paper[sighs and yawns], I am asking Yuvaraj[Some More Sighs and Sneers], on your behalf to help us in preparing the Model answer paper By Typing it out[A Cold Damp Feeling grew inside me].

And, with that, he handed me a Ten Page Tamil Paper crammed to the Fullest, and another set of papers which showed the Required Formatting…. And, I was to do this in my Pooja Holidays, while I had much more Important Duties, such as Finishing Maths Homework, or Writing my[sighs and another Cold Damp Feeling] Biology Record or Studying up for the Next Chemistry Weekly Test or completing Riddle or learning something new….

And, Today, I have completed 6 Pages of that, and intend to give the remaining to the DTP or my Poor Dad’s Office Staff to complete, by using the Same Insert Symbol System…

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      School Website!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

It was almost by accident that I stumbled into the Computer Lab today, only to be called in to discuss the Ongoing rebuilding of our School Web-Site! Currently, they have a god-forsaken childish website at http://www.stmaryschennai.com. Till I came, the Competing tools to build the Website were Microsoft Frontpage and Swish! But, ofcourse, I made him understand how stupid that was, and he is in favour of building it in ASP.NET… It now only needs the Principal’s Approval…..

So, If I could build it, I am certainly going to use AJAX atleast somewhere. Yeah, sure I would use it somewhere, especially after seeing some of the Results it has produced and the effect it has had on Yahoo!

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Problems…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
Just got free… It’s pretty hard, when you have to finish a 10 page Word Document in Tamil, or have 17 Sums of Homework in Math of Finding the Square root of Polynomials with Degree 7, or trying to write at a better handwriting with CTS and, you have just bought a Game which you have dreamed about from when you got a Computer as a 4th STD Kid…

Anyway, I just thought over the School Site Design, and suddenly the problems involved came to my mind. For Example, the Children’s Day Competietions, the heavy Maths Homework, the Moronic Tamil Tests and the Constant History Tests add heavily to the Burden of Creating an Entire Website from Scratch. Also, the fact that I am the only person in our Team to know ASP.NET dosn’t help things much.

And, I have only Visual Web Developer 2.0 Express, which uses ASP.NET 2.0, which, to the Best of My Knowledge, isn’t provided by Hosting Companies…. So, what the hell can I do ?

The last three days and Nights have been hectic, with my days full, and myself being awake till 1 in the Morn to make my Maths Homework complete…. I thought of making it up today, but, 17 More Sums of the Same Type and which Take two and a Half page of Foolscape Paper dosn’t make it anything easier… And the thought that My Tamil Teacher will be paying me a Visit tomorrow[sigh, cry:((] haven’t helped things anyway..

And, having Warlords Battlecry 3, which was the First Game Demo I played at 4th STD, as Full Version is sooo Tempting, that I can do nothing to stop myself from starting it Now and getting my Hero to the 11th Level….

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      A Byte Lighter..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Now, Have you ever toiled for for 2 Weeks moving your mouse around in small movements and double clicking often and doing a thing which is the thing you hate the most in the world ? Well, those of you who have tried to do things in Tamil using Word’s Insert -> Symbol Feature would know the pain, as I have experienced it..

Anyhow, the useless Tamil work is finished, though not without Troubles. My Right hand is shaking even more, and it feels much more relieved to do some straight fast Typing….

      Enough of My Personal woes…

I’d like to know your feedback on my proposed features for the School WebSite :

      1. The Usual Information about the School(Rules, Achievements, Activities, blah blah)
      2. Exam Results
      3. School Blog
      4. MarianStar Online
      5. The Past-Present Pupils Wiki
      6. Contact Online

Now, the Exam results is the thing that I plan to use AJAX for, since I can’t think of anywhere else to use it. And, the School Blog would be our Official School Blog. And, Marian Star is our School Newspaper-like thing, Which I plan to bring online….

The Past-Present Pupils Wiki, or The P3W 🙂 is my idea for a feature for the Past-Pupils. I suppose, a wiki might be good for them to give Contact Information, their Achievements, their life Stories, etc. Now, do tell me what you think of this, ok ? I have not been getting any comments of late, which is really really really really really really discouraging, you know:(

Update: The Contact Online is something of an Afterthought, which will allow you to give feedback to specific persons, like the Principal or some Teacher. (I am not sure wether this will be allowed, but I can use AJAX here, so, just putting this up here:P)

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Drained..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Some Time back, when people used to say that the STD X is breaking their Back, I used to laugh and say that that won’t happen to me. But, they used to laugh back and say that I’d understand sometime later….

And, I am understanding it now…. Maths Homework…… Tamil[Sic] Notes and Tests…. Chemistry Tests….. English Readthroughs….. and, most Horrible of them all, the Biology Records..

I have had around some Four hours of sleep on an average for the past month, after School Began. And, Still, My Biology Record is 90% incomplete, the Tamil Notes still seem immovable, and the Maths Homework Seems Unending..

I avoid all diagrams in my Biology Exams and manage to get good marks still… But, this Record thing is taking my head out. You can’t escape it, and you have to draw it, and if there’s a small thing wrong in your drawing, your Record Paper gets torn, even though you explain that it was your best and you couldn’t do anything better and it took you a lifetime to get it done….:(

Hope I get it done…. But, I suppose, I have asked Ilyas, one of my friends with a LaserPrinter Hand;) to come over to my house on Sunday and draw my records for me…Hope he helps…

And, all My Energy seems to have been drained out of me.. It justs seems like to me, I am like a Zombie in Warlords : Tired, Slow, gets little work Done and Most of all, Useless:(

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Failing..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I am failing in a lot of things nowadays, though. For example, I failed to Draw my Record Drawing properly. I failed to give Directions to Ilyas to my House, Since I don’t even know them. And, lots and lots of things like this…

And, one thing which Really upsets me, is that I am failing at my Cricket Fielding. In cricket, I am an extrordinarily poor Batsman and an Average Bowler, but I pride myself with my Fielding, especially Catching. I had swift Leg Movement, thanks to my Karate, and swift Hand Movement too, thanks to practice…

But, Nowadays, I am failing even at Catching. My Feet Movement has become much better and much more Sophisticated and Precise, due to my even better Karate Practice. But, my Hand Movement is getting almost Zero, which I suspect is due to the CTS which I suffer from….

For Example, Yesterday Afternoon, I played Cricket at School. I am usually the Boundary Fielder when an Explosive Batsman is batting and a Close-Up Fielder when someone like Dravid or Kaif is batting. But, yesterday, I counted 7 Catches to me, and dropped 6 of them, of which I got my hand to the Ball covering around 2 Feet in Less than A Second, only to have them hit my hand and bounce back, Since my hands aren’t obeying me:((

The Only Catch I took yesterday was a Rather high one, and that too, It first bounced off my hand and I caught it on second attempt…. Seems I am failing at a lot of things…

And Today, I failed at Warlords:( My Level 36 Hero was killed in a really stupid way, by a small Archer! How it happened was, I had my speakers off and, I couldn’t hear the Hero Warnings, as being attacked from a Cliff. So, he died……… A Month’s work wasted:(( But, I’d build a new one, and surely, will have him much more powerfull than my present one…

And, I hope and pray that I don’t fail in the coming Children’s Day Competietions and the School Website…..

And thanks to Sunil for comming up with an Innovative method for Determining the presence of ASP.NET on a Server. Thanks Sunil!

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Rain Rain go away…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
It’s been almost 15 Days since I posted, and for Obvious Reasons : Rains were pouring here in Chennai, though not to the extent of that in Mumbai. But, for not so obvious reasons, my Internet Connection has not been working for around 10 Days. And, it still is not working. Indeed, I am posting this from my Cousin Sudar‘s Place.

It rained really heavily, thanks to which I got 4 Splendid Holidays, which, however, I wasted in drawing My Biology Record and raising my Warlords Battlecry Hero Level to 47:(. But, I also got to watch the great second match between Indian and Srilanka, which was really great:)

But, things aren’t going well. Although Sunil helped me out of one problem, another problem still exists. And, that one is that I still haven’t written one line of code for our Website, thanks to the fact that I still haven’t been able to get Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2002, since I don’t think ASP.NET 2.0 Hosting is available anywhere….

But, I suppose I can jump over these. Children’s Day Competietions have been announced and to my sad Surprise, there is no Presentation:((. I really don’t know why they did that, but now, that limits my scope to just Quiz and to a lesser extent, Essay Writing:( Hope Eagles wins atleast this time…

I have complained to the BSNL officials, and hope they get my Connection up and running. And, as soon as I have that, I suppose I’d get more to you…

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Atlast, today BSNL has heard my pleas and my Internet Connection is alive and well after going dead at the slightest hint of Rain…

In the meantime, many things have happened. One, ofcourse, is the Rain. It didn’t rain much in my place, but I happily accepted the Three Days Holidays it has given me. I prayed for more Rain. But, Little did I realize, that the rain has claimed the life of almost A hundred and Fifty People….

And, then, is the fact that I have got my own 1 GB USB Pen Drive[Transcent JetFlash 110], a reward;) for my Second Rank in the Quarterly….

And, lots and lots more interesting stuff to come… But, Dad’s already shouting, and I’d get back after some time…

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Things happening…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
I have not blogged for some time now…. Physics Records, Chemistry Records, Biology Records, Chemistry Observations, Tamil Tests, Children’s day competietions have helped keep me very busy…

And, anyway, I got two Certificates : One for Quiz and one for Essay Writing… I got first in Quiz and Third in Essay..

And, ofcourse I did get that 1 GB USB Pen from Dad for the second Rank….

And, when things seem to be getting a bit relaxed, the Practicals start.. And, before they end and you feel like relaxing again…. The Half-Yearly Exam sets in…

And, before you know the Exam is over and finished, you get your Revision Practicals.. Then the Revision exams.. Then the Revision Practicals again…. Then the Revision Exams again….

Well, it seems I just have to agree with Saurabh and say “Life is just one damn thing after another..”

But, ofcourse there are things to lighten them up. For example, Visual Studio .NET 2005. And, maybe, My Next Project, since the School website seems to have been forgotten, will lighten things up… And, I suppose it is more likely than not that my next Project might go up on Source Forge as OpenSource….

Well, then hang on, I might just want your help with that project!

And, BTW, the TCO SRM means a Top Coder Organization‘s Single Round Match. More Details about the TCO SRM can be found here.

      BaBIE Reborn….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Well, some of you may remember my First Project called BaBIE, which stood for Build a better Internet Explorer. Well, but, since it has long been abandoned and forgotten, primarily starting due to the fact that Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1 was toooooo Crashy when I was using it. But, the main reason was:

      1. I am a Real Bombyx Moron with a piece of Apple for a Brain (True)
      2. Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1 Crashed Every Time I Started It (True)
      3. Crashy Components (True)

But, Now, After I pondered over for some meaningful use of my Time, My Eyes went back to my old blog(Which has been Forgotten), the Idea of Project BaBIE returned to me. Now, the Retail Version of the Visual Basic Express Editions were available, and the WebBrowser Control that ships with .NET 2.0 has proven to be Quite good, I suppose I could bring it back to life…..

But, ofcourse, Everything has to be rewritten. The Basic Framework has to be changed. But, some can be reused. For example, the the Quick Search Component can be reused easily. And, the new Framework will be Easier too…

But, this time the work will be a Lot Slower. First, I am now nearing my Public Exams, which should slow things up a LOT. And, ofcourse there is the Imagine Cup. And, ofocurse there are a thousand other things that will keep me out…

But, this time though(hopefully), I will not be alone. I suppose I would release it on an Opensource License. Maybe not GPL. But, hope that will be Open……

And, ofcourse, there is the Codename to choose for it. Well, Usually I just look around, but this time, I just got over to WikiSpecies and started clicking on the Random Page link a Couple of Times. And, the Third attempt was fruitful, bringing up this page about the Coelacanth. Well, the Coelacanth was supposed to be an Ancient fish thought to be extinct for millions of years, but was rediscovered 30 years ago!

Same thing with BaBIE. I thought it was out and out. I thought it was extinct. But, now it has been rediscovered again. Hope it does not become extinct again….

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

Exams start tomorrow and end on the 21st, with the Deadly Tamil coming in First. Hope I could crack an 80 in that, since an MP3 Player is at stake for the Second Rank this time…

Well, Hope to get back online sometime later before the exams end, but, it is not often that I am alone in the house…

And, thanks to all of you people for wishing me good health while I had Typhoid….

And, BTW, I’d like to congratulate my Cousin Sudar for getting a New Domain and a Blog on that one, and as well as losing His Cell Phone and HDD😉

      Tamil Over…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Well, Tamil exam was over Yesterday, and I just maybe have to thank my lucky stars for the Question Paper…

I studied only one Detail Answer, and that one was present…

I studied only 4 Poetry, and all three which came were ones I studied…

And, pretty much, It was rather easy and easier than I expected it to be. Suppose, I can get somewhere around the 80 mark and maybe even cross 90% this time….

And, another thing is, Sanat, the Confirmed-First Rank Guy has fractured his Elbow, but his left Elbow. But, I am prepared to bet that even if he has a Fractured his Skull, He’d come over to write the Exams…….

Monday is English, which I hope to retain the 93 I got last Time….

Last time, it was an USB, this time, it is an MP3 Player which is at stake, if I get the Second Rank…. Hope I get it…

And, BTW, people, I have found that I have not got any comments for the last week or so. Is it because of the use of RSS Readers or is it that it is only Me Who is reading my blog ?:-?

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

Anybody else had this problem, people ?

And, BTW, about my Rave in my last post about the fact that I am getting No Comments, I suppose, maybe that’s because I am not commenting anywhere…. So, I hope to start Commenting on articles, rather than just reading them up with RSS Bandit…

      Licence…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

Idling around today, I just went up to try clean up my harddisk and found, to my surprise, many projects, started, not finished, and which may not be finished….

Then, instead of making them Idly waste their time sitting in my overcrowded Hardisk, why not put them up in SourceForge or GotDotNet, where others and me can develop them in our Free Time……

And, an OpenSource Licence does suggest itself to the situation, since it’s gonna be a community project, although most probably it’d be only me doin anything about them;)

But, anyway, i just googled about OpenSource Licences and found this page. But, then, I was shown around 50 Licences, with rather Cryptic Names and unintelligable(to me) garble of Legal Terms. So, I am sortof confused and confounded about the Licence to use….

Probably, some of you souls with more Experience could help me…. Hope you do help me figure em out….

      Thanks, and Be Right Back….

      Tech Support.

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,

I’ve heard lot of jokes about humorous calls in Tech Support. But, I never intended to actually experience one. But, I was wrong…

Dad’s been asking me to do some tech support lately. Not the serious kind. Some rather kiddish kind, such as copying files, saving files and such things. Mostly, for friends of my Dad, who had just acquired a computer.

But, today, Dad called me from the Sales Tax Office. They needed to save a File on a Floppy Disc. But, they had Absolutely No Idea about the Program they were using or the Operating System. Since it was a Government Office, I supposed maybe they might have Linux, since Dad also reported the Program to be “Something Resembling Word, but Not Word…”.

Saying so, Dad handed the Phone over to the woman who was supposed to be handling the Computer Systems. I asked her what was the Program she was using, and she said that she had no Idea. Them I asked her what OS, but that too, she said she’s never heard the Term….

So, I asked her what was on the Bottom Left of Her Screen. I was simply trying to determine if it was Windows or Linux. But, the Reply I got Surprised me : “
      Samsung!”.
Well, do I have to tell you that I could hardly stop laughing ?

But, then, I asked her what was on the bottomleft corner of the Screen and above the Samsung, and she said : “S-T-A-R-T Yezhudiyirukku…”(It’s written S-T-A-R-T). So, It was Windows after all…..

So, I relied on the use of the Common File Save Dialog Box and asked her to find “F-I-L-E” Written on the Top Left. She found it after some time and then, in the same way, I guided her to the Save-As Option. She successfully clicked it and brought up the Save-As Dialog Box..

Now, I have to make her Navigate to the Floppy Drive. So, I asked her to type A: (A-Colon). But, then, she reported that she’s typed A:C-O-L-O-N. Well, Now, My Phone didn’t have a Hold Button, so I had to cover the mic with my hand…

Luckily, I had shown dad before how to enter a FilePath, and he intervened and succeded in changing the Directory to A: and saving the File…

While It did leave me in Fits of Laughter, it also left me wondering about User Interface Design. These kinda not-so-bright users seem to be the predominant ones working in places like Government Offices. But, what hit me most was that most of those People worked in places where Marks were used to select the Candidates. Obviously, Marks don’t measure the Stupidity of a Person.

Also, maybe, IUI may seem to atleast reduce those Kinda Complaints. Word Processors such as these would offer 2 Interfaces : 1 IUI and the Other the Normal One. For, IUI would atleast prevented this kinda thing, provided it has some kinda promenient option named : Save in Floppy Disk. But, then, It’s kinda a Complex Decision, one which I don’t think I have the Brain or Experience to make or comment about…

Anyway, on a side note, Finished the English II Exams Today and, I didn’t have enough Time. But, I finished everything just in Time. Well, Mom’s started shouting already, but that’s not very bad, considering I have Maths I tomorrow…

      Where are the Comments ?

      Love at First Frequency…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Hi Again,
My Transistor Radio seems to have fell in love with me! Seriously. No Joking….

What happens is, I have my Transistor Radio wired up to my Computer Speakers, and love the RadioMirchi Station, a local favorite here. But, oflate, for about two days, the Transistor has started behaving rather very strangely……

As I was sitting on the Chair this morning, the Radio was working fine. Then, Mom called me to switch off the Motor and I went. As Soon as I left the Vicinity of the Computer, the Radio went on Fritz. This happened quite a few times in the next few minutes, since mother was washing clothes and I had to switch them off/on quite often….

So, I decided to experiment. I walked away from the Radio for enough distance so that the Radio went on Fritz again. And, I extended my hand towards it… And then…..

When my hand was about 15 cms from the Radio, it went crystal clear again! I repeated the experiment, and got the same result…

But, what’s more, it’s insensitive to Dad’s hand! I asked him to get his hand near by, and it was still on fritz…..

Now, I have really no Idea what is happening here. Maybe, some frequencies or something of that sort. I’ve never heard of thing before. Or, maybe, is it that I am becoming a super-hero like spiderman or superman ?:P

Since, ofcourse, I am nothing more than a dumb moron with an overloaded computer, I know that the problem is with something else. But, what that something else is, I am unable to comprehend…

      Any Ideas, guys ?

And, keep the comments coming, and thanks Saurabh for the Long comment for the Long Post:P

So, I just looked up some CSS and modified my Template completely. Looks good to me. Just drop in a comment on how you feel this thing looks like….

I was just reading through Scooble’s Huge Blogroll and found one strange thing : He is a Family Blogger…

Here is what I mean : He Blogs, His Wife Blogs, and His Son Blogs

And, What’s more, they are at different Places! Scoble Blogs at WordPress, His Wife at MSN Spaces and his Son at Blogger…..

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, Today morning was quite free and having nothing to do, I started to find blogs to read. And, I came across the RSS Team Blog from Microsoft with some really Interesting News about UI Consistency….

Well, the thing is, the IE7 RSS Icon is the same as the FireFox RSS Icon. First, it was the Lock Icon on the Addressbar. Then Tabbed Browsing. Now, the RSS Icon. Looks like Microsoft is on a standardizing spree;)

Hope to post more befor my stupid brother starts crying for Cricket 2005[grr…]…..

      FireFox 1.5

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Last Post before my Brother starts crying[gr..]

I upgraded to FireFox 1.5 today morning, inside the happy hours, since It was a 5 MB Download and I had only about 100 MB of Bandwidth to last me the rest of this month….

Well, nothing much new here. The Annoying Dilaog Box that was displayed when a 404 or some sortof error was encountered has been replaced by a really cute DIV in the middle of the HTML area…..

And, ofcourse, you could just wipe out all your history/cache/cookies/passwords/etc.. with a press of 3 Buttons : Ctrl+Shift+Del. Pretty useful for some[though not for me;)], since it will look extremely like pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del….

And, one more important thing is that the’ve got Incremental Updates, so that people on dialup and on restrictive Bandwidths like me can Update Firefox with just some 300KB or 400 KB instead of 3 or 4 MB…

Aside from these, the’ve made the menus of the default theme a bit more sleeker and sharper, but then, it might’ve been just my eye that’s the difference;)

That guy’s already started crying and dad’s already started shouting:(

Monday’s Biology and I’m all armed and prepared…Hope to get 99 atleast in this……;)

      Bye for now….

      The Creator of the WWW..

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

I suppose we all know about Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee. Atleast all of us Should. But, he’s better known as Tim-Berners Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web…

His Achievements are Endless. He was in the Team that built one of the First Computers. He was the one who first dreamed up the Idea of Hypertext. He is the creator of HTML. He is the creator of the First Web Browser, WorldWideWeb. He is also the creator of the first HTTP Server, httpd. He is also the founder of the W3C. He was the author of the First Page on the Internet[archived here].

Well, you could find all these Information in the above Wikipedia link, but there’s one thing that wikipedia dosn’t show : He’s started Blogging! Yes! That’s true. His Blog can be found here.

Just drop in how you feel and, My Dear Cousin Sudar, I think it’s time you change the Title of Your Blog Too…

      Sentient Sentences…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I could hardly stop laughing while I was reading through This Story[hehehe;)], written by an MIT Student. Well, If you have some spare time [and even If you don’t], just go through it. Don’t loose your Patience before you get to the end, as it is quite funny, since all the statements that those
      Sentient
Sentences make are true and logical, provided you make the assumption that each Sentence is Sentient of it’s own Right and seperate from every other sentence there…

Well, After Reading that story and several other Stories from MIT, It seems I’ve started writing like the Guy who wrote them:P

Well, and thanks to David Cowan for pointing me there…

      PageRank Problems…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I’ve had this Question for long ever since I read about PageRank in an Issue of the CHIP magazine that my Dad bought for some 50 Rupees some three years back. Intrestingly, That Magazine was bought by Dad since it posed a CD with some Games [Demos] in it…

But, then, it had an article on PageRank and google and all those things. At that Time, I was just starting to learn VB and had done some non-serious absolutely crappy programing in C/C++. And, I’ve just had a vague Idea of the Internet and Search Engines from my Cousin Sudar….

But, that has changed Now. I use Google a Lot Now. It’s my Default Search Engine with both Avant and FireFox. And, I suppose that the average Web User has used Google within the Last 60 Seconds. And the PageRank algorithm seems to be really working….

But then, something else seems to strike at me. Let me explain them to you here…

An Important part of Google’s PageRank Algorithm is the No. of Links a Page gets: The More Links your page Gets, the higher is your PageRank. But the Problem is, the higher is your PageRank, the topper you go on Google. And, the topper you go on Google, more people will see it. And, as more people see it, you will naturally get many more Links. And, as you get more incoming Links, you get a Higher PageRank. And, as you get a Higher Page Rank, you move up the Google Search List. And, you get more people. And you get more links. And you get a Higher PageRank…… So, it goes on Recursively…

So, I suppose You got my Point : There maybe many other sites equally as good and with better Quality, but they get lost in the Search list due to this Recursiveness and the fact that most Average Users just don’t click the Next link of Google…

Well, Am I correct or am I missing a Point here ? Since It seems I am always wrong, I hope the more experienced brains correct my Mistake if I have one. And, If I don’t have one, just drop in your comments, since It’s really Nice to see 5 Comments at your Blog rather than 0 Comments…;)

Well, Lucky Guy Sriram😉 I suppose he’s got a build of it in his System running now;)

My Top Ten Predictions for 2006…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi. Looks like everybody’s got a 2006 Prediction List, So I’ve also got one. But, the difference here is that, all the Items in My List will be surely True. I am 100% sure that all my predictions will come True. For those who are not convinced, read on. For those who are convinced, please leave;)

      • 10.Google will NOT Buy Microsoft
      • 9. Microsoft wil NOT Buy IBM
      • 8. Webdings will NOT be the default font in Windows Vista
      • 7. Scooble will NOT go to Space outside Earth.
But, he’s a hardcore geek, and If he hears about Virgin Galatic, I bet he’d book a ticket for himself, even if it meant sell his house and everything and . But, Virgin Galatic’s First Foray into space is supposed to be in 2010, So, I don’t think this prediction is in jeapordy of being made false
      • 6. My Cousin Sudar’s Computer will malfunction atleast once.
Well due to it’s past Record, in which it broke down 3 times this year[if my memory serves right], I just suppose It’s most probable that it breaks down next year too. If any of these Predictions can be proved Wrong, it is this one…
      • 5. Imagine Cup 2006 Finals will NOT be held on the Sun.
Well, with a Corona Temperature of more than 2 Million C, I don’t think any Silicon based Computers can survive there….
      • 4. I will not Become President of India
This is due to several Reasons :

        1. President Abdul Kalam is one of my Heroes
        2. I don’t like it
        3. The Constitution clearly states that a person below an age of 35 cannot be a President, and I am not 35 next year…

      • 2. Indian Politics will never make Sense.
        Atleast to me;)
      • 1. 9183422132312311 – x = 1239123123455 – – x Will NEVER be True, for whatever values of x.
Well take a peice of Paper and Pen and work it out;)

So, these are my predictions for 2006 and I’d be surprised to see any of them proved False. And, fellow bloggers, we’ve still got 2 Days more, so just put down your predictions….;)

      Bye for NowBye for now….

      Entrance Exams and :O

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, this issue has been almost torturing me from the moment it started. Well, if it were to be some small trivival matter, I’dve just raved about it and left it to rest. But this issus, it is about my Future. And, not just mine, but also that of many of my fellow students. Well, without starting to sound like a boring lecturer, let me get to the point.

If you don’t want to hear a Rave, please move on…. Seriously

Note: I stole this warning from here, which was stolen from here. Hey Jeremy, I hope you don’t mind this bit of Copyright Violation;)

If you are in Tamil Nadu, you’d know that the Common Enterance Test, which is used for College Admission has been Abolished. And, they did it in a really haphazard and moronic way that can be achieved only by a Political Organization.

Well, the gist of the Story is that, you are no longer admitted to colleges according to your Enterance Exam. Well, the basis on which you are admitted to a college is vague now. But, our teachers speculate that it will be based on several really Moronic and Dubious methods for admission, including such classics as Caste, Relegion, Date of Birth[Seniority:O] and most Moronic of all, even something called a Shuffle!. Well, so now, the fate of a student is in the hands of Chance, rather than Choice and Merit! And, ofcourse, the inevitable +2 Marks, which are all based on stupid Memorising and the Xerox Mentality.

Well, they changed it back to the Enterance Exam last time, but I don’t know what’s happening next. And, with the advent of the act which forces all colleges to have Reservations, I suppose things could get only worse. And, I donno what to expect 2 years later…..

All these, Ofcourse, provided that I am correct and not, as usual, mistaken… And, If you have any views on this, and even if you don’t have any views on this, Please Comment…;)

Well, If you’ve been following this Blog, you’d know that I sortof don’t like Tamil from posts like this and this. But, today Morning, as I was browsing by Aswin’s blog, I came across someone called Ammu. I just clicked the link and Viola! I was in a Tamil Blog!

Well, maybe this shocked me a bit. Or, maybe it pleased me a bit, seeing my Mother Language being represented in a Blog in the World Wide Web. And Certainly, quite happy to see that it consisted almost fully of Original Poems in Tamil.

And, If my Dad saw that Blog, I’d betcha that he’d want to start a Tamil Blog too;), since He’s just quite my opposite in the Tamil Area.;)

      Fantastic and Keep Going, Ammu;)

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, due to the wonderful work done by BSNL, I have to burn 436 MB of bandwidth in less than 12 hours.. How sweet… But, for this, I had to put up with almost half a month of almost abstinence…

Well, I’ve burned away 150 MBs, but still got 250 MB more. Just going around, downloading anything I can. But for my Life I just couldn’t find the windows version download of Apache 2.2! They have Windows version for all the other releases, and there is not even a single mention on the site about this…… How strange….

Hope to blog back after burning them all away, and about the stuff I downloaded….

      Any Suggestions people ?

      Credits….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, how many times have you started sleeping in a year and woke up the next year ? Well, I have done it a whole 13 Times. And, you too would’ve done this quite a lot of time, unless you are in the habit of attending New Year Parties….

But then, this year’s been a good year for me. It’s done a lot of changes to me, a little physically and a lot mentally. Well, let me just go over some of the kmilestones……;)

In January, I got my new and upgraded Computer. We upgraded our old Celeron 433 MHz with a Great 64 MB of RAM , which I have had for around 6 Years then, to a P4 2.4 GHz with 256 MB RAM. And, the first thing I installed after WinXP was put there was VS.NET 2005 Beta 1, which my Cousin Sudar was kind enough to lend to me….

And then, I just couldn’t thank my Cousin Enough. He Introduced me to Firefox, without which I’dve been lost in a mire of pop-up ads. He introduced me to the blogsphere, without which you’dve been recieving a 404 if you came to this URL. Thank you kutti anna for all that;) And Besides, without him, I’dve thought that a Computer meant a Person who computes and C was the third letter of the alphabet;)

And then, one fine day, Sunil contacted me through YIM and introduced me to the CNUGStudent. It was because of him that I am a Tamil Champ Now, and got to meet all those cool People….

And then there was Sriram, who inspired me to reach Technical Excellence. And then there was Saurabh and Aswin, who helped me look at the lighter side of life.

And then, ofcourse, where my Teachers. I’dve been an Ignorant guy with an intention to be average without my last year’s Class Teacher and Tamil Teacher, Mr. Arul Rajan. And, without my English Teachers Mr. Dominic & Mrs. Gear, I’dve known as much English as a midget in a Pond. And, without my History Teacher Mr. Lacto, I’dve never known what it is to face life in the true sense, without the protection of a Managed Environment such as a School. Without Mrs. Selvi, I’dve shunned Science like anything. And, to all those teachers who made life at my School Easy and Exciting.

And ofcourse, thanks to Mr. John Peter, who made sure that our School Life would never be Short of Entertainment;)

And, without my Dad, I’dve never seen the light of Reasoning…

Thanks to all you people, for you have made me what I am….

Well, in retrospect, the thing Is, this Year has been the year for me, because of the help of other people. And, as Bill Gates said “We can see more not because we are great, but because we stand on the Shoulders of Gaints..”

Bye Now Guys, and Wish You all a New Year much more happier than the last one you had….

      Meet you all next year!

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I know it’s a lot late for me, but I just couldn’t get myself to this page yesterday, since I was sleeping for almost all the day after I got back from school…..

Now, the Event was pretty much superb. And, yes that was my First Event. The first Session was on C#, and showcased some amazing DirectX and GPS Apps. And, next came the SQL Server 2005 Session, of which I couldn’t understand a single thing, since I’ve never actually used it…

And, next, came Anand‘s VB Session. Well, let’s say that he was the best speaker I’ve ever seen and that session, especially the refactoring, was the most fantastic thing I’ve seen. And, whenever I’ve seen him, he’s always had an attitude of don’t-care-be-cool attitude, the attitude of the ideal geek…..

And, then was a Session on AJAX, which was a lot into theory and history, and a small bit into code. And then came a session on The Team System, of which too I couldn’t understand anything, since It seemed to be about Project Managers and Multi-Person Team Projects, both of which I’ve never encountered. Nevertheless, the Person who did the session was a great public speaker too….

And yes, there was a catch. And that was during the end, when VS.NET 2005 DVDs were given out. After seeing the scene there, no wonder the stampedes occured in the Relief Distribution Centres in here….

      Bye for now….

      ClearType : WOWWWWWWWW

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, when was the last time you saw a technology that made your jaw hit the floor ? Well, the last time that happened to me was when I saw a TFT Monitor in a Reliance Webworld. And, this time, it’s ClearType….

Well, I’ve heard about it before, but I tried it this time only. Well, and to say that I was blown away by it would be an understatement. It dosn’t seem bolder, but darker. And, overall, It just looks like seeing it on Paper… Fantastic….

Now, if you have Windows XP and have ClearType disabled, then you’re clearly missing something. For some strange and unkown [to me] Reason, cleartype is disabled by default in Windows XP Systems, though having Cleartype enabled would’ve clearly given Windows XP a Marketing Advantage….

Anyway, here are 5 Simple Steps to enable ClearType on your System:

      1. Go to the Display Properties

      2. Go to the Appearances Tab

      3. Click on the Effects Button

      4. Check the Box Saying “Use the Following Method to Smooth the edge of Screen Fonts”, and select ClearType in the ComboBox Below..

      5. Click OK and OK again…

And, there you go! ClearType is on in your System! Well, you’d just notice the Change immediately. Reading just becomes a Pleasure… WOW…

And, the next thing I’m goanna do is to enable ClearType on all our School Systems, especially the one used for Internet Browsing.

But, why is that ClearType is not enabled by default in all Windows XP Systems ? Probably, an anti-competitive practice:P. But seriously, that’s just plain un-inutiative that Users have to do someting manual to get such a must-have feature like ClearType. I’m goanna mail to Scooble to know why….

Well, on a side note, I’ve ditched my Tech Blog at Blogsome, and I’d be doing my Tech Blog posts here itself. And, the First Revision test starts tomorrow tith the dangerous Tamil Exams[sic]. Hope to crack it….

Thanks, and keep the comments flowing….

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi people. At the end of the last post about ClearType, I said I’d be writing to Scooble to know why ClearType is not enabled by default in Windows XP. And, I was really really really really astonished to find a reply from him waiting in my Inbox as soon as I got back from school….

Well, that’s awesome! Probably the most read Blogger in Microsoft, and he just replies to an email from a GoodForNothing like me! Fantastic Public Relations;) Kudos, Microsoft….

Now, for the content of the eMail : It was short, and it said that it wasn’t enabled by default because many people can’t use it and many machines don’t support it. But, it still wasn’t detailed enough, so, I just mailed him back to give me more details about the people clause….

Well, and, Scooble turns 41 today! Happy Birthday Scoble!

Keep Commenting, and I’d be back….

      From Linux..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi Guys. I am writing this post from Linux. From SuSE Linux 9.1 to be exact. It finished download yesterday morning, after being in the queue for some 10 days. And, I started partitioning my HardDisk to make space for it at around 10 PM Yesterday, and it finished installing at around 11:45. Luckily, All my nightmares about an unbootable computer did not come true….

Well, the first thing I noticed was the Typography : It looked a hell lot like ClearType. I donno why, maybe, atleast to me, the Text looked a lot like using ClearType….

Well, but it took me almost an hour to figure out how to setup my Internet connection, which took less than 2 minutes in Knoppix. This is ontop of the fact that both use the KDE Desktop and [obviously] the Linux Kernel.

Though the Typography rocks in the UI, it completely sucks in the Webbrowser, Konqueror. I just can’t see the difference between an e and an r. Suppose I’ve gotta tweak it once I get back from School…

Response times are good, though my attempts at installing Mono are in vain. Hope to get the hang of it, and install Firefox and Opera….

Well, I actually installed it just to check out Mono, and I hope I can check it out. I’ve got the mono Runtime in, but the MonoSharp Development Platform doesn’t install. Hope to make it out…

Well, nice thing to blog about when you have just an hour before your English II Exam begins, isn’t it ?:P

Thanks, and keep the comments coming….

      From Windows…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi Guys. I’m posting this from Windows, and am pretty much happier to be back here. My First Experience with Linux didn’t prove to be that much Great….

Well, it isn’t as fast and responsive as it is hyped to be. For example, when a Windows app hangs, I can see it with my eyes : I can’t click on it, my mouse cursor turns a hourglass, I get a Not Responding Signal in the Title Bar, and I can always call my Trusty Task Manager to close it up for me…

No such luck in Linux. You don’t even know if the app is hung. You just keep clicking, the UI is responding, but the app dosn’t respond…. Queer… Strange… And frankly, non-inuitative & Stupid…

Then, there’s even no way to close that thing : No Task Manager kinda thing, and even right-clicking and clicking close has no effect….

And, the app that was actually hanging was also strange : YaST, which is supposed to be the Control-Panel kinda thing. It kept hanging, and not closing. In the end, I had around 7 “Windows” of YaST Opened up before I shut it down…

And, shutting down is also not inuitative : You don’t get a clear Shut Down button. Only a log off Button that gives you the option of “Closing Session”, “Restarting” or “Shutting Down”.

And yet, I stilll can’t get Mono to Install. Fancy I’d be getting Mono-Live to download today night, thanks to Sreenivaasan….

And Yes, I’d be downloading it using my Tried and Trusted WindowsXP:P

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

SuSE 9.1 Out of My System..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi Guys. Well, just uninstalled SuSE Linux 9.1. Linux didn’t make that much of a good impression on me though…..

Anyway, Aswin recommended Fedora to me, and since have already Downloaded the 4 CDs of Fedora Core 4, I think I might be installing it today…

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

    • #3259775

      From Fedora….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well well well, It seems I’ve been on an Operating System Speree : In the last 3 Days, I’ve used[or atleast tried to use] 5 Operating Systems! Well, besides Windows 98 & Windows XP, I tried SuSE Yesterday in my System, and even started the MacOS 9 in the ancient Mac in our School. And today, the fifth Operating System is here : Fedora Core 4….

Well, first I burned the 4 CDs, and inserted the first one and Restarted. When the bootstraper loaded, I got a message asking me if I’d like to verify the Installation Media. I just gave it the go ahead, and after some 15 minutes of “Verification”, it reported that my Media is not Verifiable….. Great, huh ?

Anyway, I just continued with the Installation, and after some 15 minutes selecting Packages, I gave it the GoAhead and it started Installation…. But 2 minutes into the Installation, Tragedy Struck…

Well, there was a Power Outage! And, my UPS lasts for 50 seconds with monitor turned off, and 5 seconds with Monitor Turned on… So, the system just went out after some 50 secs, since I instinctively switched off the Monitor…

So, I was in a great spot of trouble : The Harddisk has been Partitioned, the MBR has been Overwritten, but the Boot Manager has not been Installed! I Didn’t even know if my System would boot or not.. And, Imagine my Frustration when the Power came back on 2 Minutes after my System went off!

Well, the Fedora CD 1 was still in, so it just booted off the CD, and went to the Install Screen. But this time, the option to use FreeSpace wasn’t there in Partitioning, since The FreeSpace has already been partitioned….

I had No Idea how to proceed, but then there was an Option called Remove all Linux partitions in Disk. Though I had no Idea what it did, I just selected it, and all’s been well…

I followed the same steps, and after about an hour of waiting, I just managed to get Fedora up and running…

Well, it’s given me a better First Impression than SuSE though. The Typography is Great like SuSE and since I am using FireFox now, the Typography in the WebPages is also good, though not as good as the one in the UI…

And, connecting to the Internet was a bit tougher though : While SuSE had a pretty clear Option called DSL in the Internet Section of YaST2, it was not so easy in the case of Fedora. Help yielded No Result. Infact, it took me almost 5 minutes to find out why the Search Button in Help is disabled. Looks like I didn’t select any source to search in…

Well, anyway, I just explored the menu and found out that I had to use the Internet Configuration Wizard. And after that, it was a breeze….

And, it’s got GAIM installed by Default, though it says KDE Instant Messaging Application in the Menu and GAIM in the application…

Anyway, I’d be exploring it much more, and hope to get the hang of it sooner than later…

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

Of Amazingly Stupid, Moronic, Idiotic TV Programs….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi Guys. Well, my usually Stupid Brother has cried my Dad into giving Cable TV Connection to our TV, and most of the Channels suck, except Pogo maybe. But then, the programs telecast in them are just amazingly Stupid, that you wonder Where People’s Sixth Sense went….

Well, today, my Mom forced me to watch a really stupid Program in SunTV called “Thanga Vettai” (Gold Hunt). “General Knowledge valatthukko” [Increase your General Knowledge] was the response when I tried in vain to change to Pogo to watch the Looney Toones….

Well, I just gave up and tried to make some use of that program. In the end, it ended up being really much more funny than Looney Toones, and we just were laughing our head out…

For example, one of the Questions was “How many People are in a Volleyball team ?” Since the guy blinked, the Actress who was conducting the program gave a Clue “Murugannin Arupadai Veedin Yennikkai” [The No. of Temples in Lord Muruga’s promenient 6 Temples]. Well, I know it’s kinda lame, but I, my Dad and my Brother just couldn’t stop laughing when that guy told quite confidently “30”…=)) Well, think he counted the Audience as well….:P

But next was the most fantastic part. They had No Idea what the WTO is. Then, a girl just said “I thinking it is America” when asked where is Mosco! =))

Then came the part that made us ROTFL. It was the buzzer Round and the Question was “What was the Capital of Zimbabwe”. The correct answer was Harare. One Girl just pressed the button Confidently and blurted out “South Aftica!”….ROTFL….

Well, that makes us wonder : If those people who passed Audition and came into the public show, then spare a thought for those people who didn’t make it through the Audition…. Fancy, the 6th Sense missing ?:P

But seriously, when we Talk about Usablity and User Interface Design and Human Comuter Interactions, we emphasise a concept that somewhat states that The User is always Right and the Interface Designer has to make sure that the User can use the Software, however Moronic he might be. But then, just have a look at people like these : One of the guys [Who answered that the Vandaloor Zoo was in Kadaloor, instead of in Vandaloor:P] there told us that he was an Assistant Manager in some company. Well, fancy how to design stuff to be used by Such Morons as these ?.

Well, I’m quite sure you’ve had experiences like this [or the previous one]. So, fancy blogging about it and giving a Trackback here ? I’ve never had a Trackback, so I can’t see how it works…

      Web Crawler Status…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I just started writing a Stone-Age style WebCrawler some 2 days ago. But, I’ve actually spent just 3 hours on it since that time, due to my Exams….

Well, so far till today, I’ve got quite something to show for : It’s written in VB.NET, is completely Multi-Threaded, extracts plaintext as well as regular hyperlinks, and MessageBoxes the contents of the HTML Files it downloads:P

Well, I haven’t run into any Multi-Threading issues yet. And, I’ve yet to start on Lucene….

Well, it’s still got lots of things to get done : Respecting Robots.txt, Index the stuff using Lucene, and quite a lot of stuff….

Well, trying to get the stuff I’ve done till now online.. Will Post a Link as soon as I get it online…

Update : Here is the Link for the Source ZIP File. About 423 KB. Requires .NET 2.0, and Visual Basic .NET 2005 Express or the Visual Studio 2005 any Editions….

Well, just download it and see how it works. The Search and Index Facility is not yet in though, but expect to be flooded with MessageBoxes without any sign of Ending:P

Well, Just comment how it is. Comments on the Code Quality and Design are especially welcome, and are even Requested 😛

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

      New Language..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, first the Buzzword was Platform Interoperability, and now It’s Usability. Wherever you look, you see Usability and User Friendly User Interfaces….

Well, in all that hubub, Usability in Programming Languages seems to have been forgotten. Well, you’d know it if you tried to teach programming to someone who never knows a Toolbar from a Textbox, but can use PageMaker and Word…

Well, so it is : My next project : A new Language : Easy! Well, me, some of my School buddies, and Aswin are doing it, and maybe, my School Buddies might turn out to be Beta, Alpha and Pre-Alpha testers:P

And, well, I’ve already designed most of the Syntax of the Language, since I had nothing else to do today in School, since I’ve missed my Geography[sic] Book at home and had nothing to study with. So, I just converted some of my early C programmes into the would be Syntax of Easy. So, in such a way, I formed almost the complete Syntax of Easy, in about 2 hours…

Well, here’s the simple, classical Hello World Program in Easy :

      Start Program Name="Hello World" Author="Yuvi"
      Start Function Main
      Print "Hello World!"
      End Function
      End Function

      Looks a Lot VBish, doesn’t it ?:P

Well, it could be also written as:

      Start Program Name="Hello World" Author="Yuvi"

      Print "Hello World!"

      End Function

      And, also as :

      Print "Hello World!"

So, as an exercise, I’d also be learning many new languages, such as Python, Perl, Lua, LISP and Ruby. And thus, incorporate the easiest to use, and best features of all languages into mine…

Well, my ever stupid brother has started whining to play some stupid game:( Why don’t you go to his blog and bash him, or comment here and bash me ?:P

Well, after my Geography Exam gets over tomorrow, fancy, I’d have a more complete post about Easy…

Now, I want your opinions on this thing… So, just leave them for free…

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

Well, I think I mentioned in some of my Posts my friend named Abu : He’s the first geek I met at school. Well, fancy, you’d get quite a bit of a feeling if you are to meet a Geek at a School where you have previously met with, well, normal-people. He’s a really really interesting fellow, and I’ve been trying to get him to blog. And, today, I’ve succeded : Here is his Blog.

Well, if you read his introductory post, he refers to me as UV. Well, I really really really really really don’t like to be called that : Brings out images of killer rays forcing their way through Ozone Depletion. So, don’t call me that:(

And, give him some Advice : He plays NFS/Prince of Persia too much, wasting lots of time which he could’ve used more usefully in writing some cool Algorithms or C Programs. Just go there and Bash him:P

      Well, keep Bashing him:P

      Of Morts, Elvises and Einsteins…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I heard of programmers being classified as Morts, Elvises and Einsteins.

Just wanted to say how unfair it actually was : It classified them based on Languages! That’ sooo Mortish:P

Since, it says a typical Managed C++ Guy is an Einsein, while a Typical VB.NET Guy is a Mort and a Typical C# Guy is an Elvis….

Well, I absolutely disagree. A VB.NET Guy can be an Einstein. And, an MC++ Guy can be a Mort as well…

Let me give you an Example. Well, I came across this guy called Shahul through The Yahoo Chat Rooms. He claims to be an University Student, proves to be an MC++ Developer, and believes that Word/Excel/Access were written in VB6…:))

And the Reason ? Since, according to him, “VB was good at Integrating things”. He went on to explain in Detail, how you could use the RichTextBox Control as the Editing Canvas in Word and the DataGrid as the Worksheet in Excel. Even a whole Chat Room of us can’t convince him : He just doesn’t listen to Reason. A Lot of Shylock:D

So, he’s goaana be a Mort. That suits him. He Was a VB Developer. But, he is classified as a Einstein because of his current Language… Is it fair ? Are the Old Language Wars that we thought were Banquished with .NET Back ?

Well, anyway, taking into account the actual meaning of them, I’d be oscillating between Mort and Elvis. I do care If My Sort Algorithms take O(2N) or O(Log N) to execute, but I don’t care if they were O(Log N) or O(2Log N). And, I do want to get the Job[If Any:D] Done quickly, if it has to be done Quickly….

Well, what Category do You Come Under ? Comment Here, or Blog about it…

Touch?! I think he meant if one solution is O(LogN), he’s cool if his solution takes twice that long. The fact that he even knows O() notation bumps Yuvi into the Elvis or Einstein category but that Mortish oversight pulls him down to Elvis 🙂

      Linux Sucks…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

      Sorry Sorry Sorry Sorry….

I’ve been trying to avoid harsh language in my Blog, but this time, Linux Screwed up my System to such an extent that I just can’t stop….

Well, if you’ve been reading this blog, you know of my stint with Linux(SuSE and Fedora) and my bad Impression against SuSE….

But, something happened today which will make sure that I never reccomend Linux to any Sane Person whom I meet…

Well, it all started really simple : I was in IM with Aswin, and we were talking about putting up Mambo in our SourceForge WebSpace for Easy. The Conversation shifted to the tools we used to upload them. I said that I used WinSCP to copy them, while Aswin said he used OpenSSH in Linux to get them up….

Well, I said I’d be blogging about why Linux won’t excite the Normal User if it doesn’t do something serious, soon. He asked me to go on…

But then, I decided, since he had reccommended Ubuntu Linux to me, I wanted to try it out before posting my views on it…..

Well, the Ubuntu Linux had the Worst Setup I’ve ever seen. It took me almost 30-40 mins to get it up, and in the end, it just gave me a command line Interface! Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Stupid….

And, then, after it, I just thought of starting up my Windows XP to get rid of Ubuntu, when to my Horror I found that Ubuntu has Screwed up with my Windows Installation! ^#@#$@#$^@#&@#@#^@#^!@ it!

Well, atleast I dual booted into Windows 98, and thankfully found that all my Data is safe…..

Well, I’m writing this from Knoppix Now, and I’m never ever ever ever ever going to install any Type of Linux in my System, or encourage anyone to install it to their System….

Well, Dad still doesn’t know of this, but when he does come to know of this, I’m sure he’s goaana blast me….

Well, hope to get a WinXP CD from Somewhere and Reinstall my System. Hope I could get it right….

      Linux Sucks….
      Linux Sucks….
      Linux Sucks….

Well, atleast, I’m not going to write about the Original Post I was going to write till I could get my Windows XP System back up and running…

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

Well, if you’ve read my blog before, you’d know how much he is to me : Without him, I’dve been just another guy, watching TV, playing Cricket, going to School, doing nothing interesting. It’s because of him that I’m what I am…

Thanks Na, and a Happy Birthday!

      Well, I’m in Windows Now…

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, got the news today : IE 7 Beta 2 Goes Public!

Well, the Download Link is here for the brave hearted. But, it needs Windows XP SP2, so get that first[link here], before you start downloading this…

Due to my Recent Reinstall, I don’t have SP2, so I couldn’t try it out yet… Think I’d be trying it out and saying how it is…

Well, if you’ve been here before, you’d know that I and Aswin are workin on a New Language named Easy from this post. Now, it’s been set up at SourceForge, and we’ve managed to install WordPress there. We choose to go with WordPress, since the other one we tried, Mambo, was a bit too complex…

Well, so here you go : The URL for our Project is http://sourceforge.net/projects/easylang , while the Project HomePage is at http://easylang.sourceforge.net. The About Page is here, while the 0.0000000000000000000000001 Version of the Specs of the Language are here….

Stay tuned, it’s undergoing active Design:D And, if you can lend a helping hand, do so…

      Reinstalling Windows XP…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I should’ve posted this quite some time ago due to Linux upsetting my Windows Installation, but was a bit too lazy:(

Well, installing it was quite much more easier, much easier than Ubuntu atleast. Was up and running in about half an hour….

But, I reinstalled it again yesterday, thanks to Sunil who sent me a genuine copy of Windows XP along with SP2. Well, i’d get the Easy Code I sent to him :

      Do
      print "Thanks"
      End Do

Well, it was just plain fantastic. It took about 30 mins to install it, activate it and verify it….

And, it’s just plain fantastic. And, that’s enabled Hibernate mode as well, so I could get in nightly downloads as well….

And, it’s got an interesting side-effect, which i’d be bloggin about shortly…

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

Well, somethings you can learn from other’s experience, but other things, you can only learn from Experience. Tagging..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, before I get tagged by someone else, I’d stay on the safe side and start a tag-chain of my own. Unlike the other one, this one is quite Geeky…

Well, it has the following conditions:

      • The Tagged victim has to come up with the specifications of their dream personal computer
      • The Specifications have to be feasible : They atleast have to be in the lab. So, you can’t ask for the Google Supercomputer😀
      • The Victim needs to tag atleast two more people. If you are tagged again, you have to start the process again if the dream computer specification has changed

Well, I’d start with my Dream Computer Specifications:

      • Intel Pentium 4 Processor 3.6 GHz with HT Technology
      • 2 GB DDR2 RAM
      • 160 GB SATA Hard Disk
      • nVIDIA GeForce 4 Graphics Card
      • 21″ TFT Monitor
      • Water Cooling mechanism
      • 4 MBPS Dedicated Internet Line without any bandwidth limits
      • Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Internet Explorer 7
      • Microsoft Virtual PC
      • A DVD/CD Writer
      • A Top-Class Audio Card with 3D Synthesizing, Hardware MIDI as well as Dolby Support
      • A World class Speaker Set

Well, for a start, I’m tagging Sunil and Aswin. Let’s see how this turns out to be…

Well, I have more to say, but this thing’s gotta be here first : My Friend Shivram, as well as Krishna Prasad have started Blogging! Well, I’ve promised them a ton of comments, so hope you hlp me keep my promise…

Well, first a bit about Shiva(Shivram). He’s in 11th STD, and was the School first last time with 952 Marks out of Thousand, and was the State 3rd Rank. Fantastic Guy, and what’s more encouraging to a blogger than a ton of comments on your first Post ? And, did I mention he’s the culturals secretary of our School ?

And, Krishna was our School third last time, and he’s a fantastic guy as well. And, yep he’s our school NSS Seceratary as well, so give him a ton of comments as well…

And, in the meantime, don’t forget Abu, our School’s Robo-Geek. Give him a ton of comments as well:D

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, when I started my instance of the game of Blogger Tagging, I actually didn’t have any idea that it’d be getting this kinda a Response. So, I’d be tracking the list of people who have responded to the tags in my Blog Sidebar[Sorry guys, this blog is hosted on blogger.com, so I can’t create an extra RSS Feed:(]. I’d make it a flat list in decreasing chronological order, so that the ones who responded the latest would be on top, while the ones who responded first would be below : Very much like the Blog arrangement….

      Speed-Testing Blog Search Engines…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well well well, if you’ve been to Technorati.com recently, you’dve seen an unheard-of-before word called brrreeeport in the Top Searches, and the Hot Tags as well. Shows how powerfull a single post[actually, second half of a single post] with a title that doesn’t relate to the contents can do to the Blogsphere…..

So, here it goes : I’ve said the word brrreeeport before, and I am saying it again : brrreeeport. And, I’ve also tagged this Post brrreeeport

On that note, maybe, I’m thinking of Technorati Tagging all my Posts if I could get some time on my hands, which is running out quickly since the Public Exams are just about a Month from now….

Well, Next week is full of Public Practical Exams, so wish me luck:D I’d crack up Physics and Chemistry with Ease. I’ve practiced enough to be confident about Botany Drawings, but I can’t say the same for Zoology Drawings:( Hope I could get Kidney of Sheep/Brain of Sheep/Lungs of Sheep/Heart of Sheep up and running…:D

      Wish me Luck guys:)

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, Cleared my Physics Practicals Today. The external was quite silent, and sortof, I just got it quite right. I got the verification of Ohm’s Law thingy, which is easily quite the easiest of our 10 Experiments. So, think I got the full 20, though I won’t know till July…

Well, Finished up Chemistry Yesterday. Got Copper Chloride, quite easy, though not as easy as I’dve liked it to be. External Examiner just sat there, eating Bondas and Drinking Tea, so none of our Boys had any problems;)

On a sadder note, just bit my teeth very very very badly while eating yesterday. Could hardly talk. Hope to get back to normal soon…

Got Botany Practicals today, and the Dreaded Zoology Ones Torrow. Wish me Luck, guys:D

      Yipee! 100%!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Just a Quick one : I’ve secured 100% on my Public Exam! Yep! That’s 100% true. No Comedy here. But, it wasn’t hard. Yep. Getting 120 out of 120 in your Practicals isn’t a Problem, is it ?:P

Anyway, finished Zoology Practicals today, and Botany Yesterday, and they were a complete contrast to my Physics and Chemistry Practicals, in that I got the Mohl’s half leaf thing for Botany, easily the toughest experiment for us. But, due to some midnight oil, I just cracked it and got it perfect. And, you do have a really fantastic feeling of great confidence inside you when your Diagram Perfectionist Biology Teacher comes over and sortof says something like : “I’m soooooo proud of you dude. I just sortof thought you’re goanna screw up this diagram, but your’s was easily the Best Mohl’s half-leaf this Batch. Wonderful”[He didn’t mention all thos artistic guys didn’t get Mohl’s Half Leaf, but hey, I need some confidence, right ?:D]

And, Zoology was quite same as well. Kinda strange that I’ve been getting Hydra, the only Slide Diagram that requires something more than scriblling all year long. I got Hydra for all my Tests so far, and this time around, I managed to do it quite satisfactorilly, thanks to some more midnight oil… And then, there was that dreaded Kidney and Lungs, which I cleared[again with Midnight Oil:D]. Looks like I won’t be having midnight oil to burn for quite some while now, though I’d be having the 2nd Revision starting on Monday, beginning with the dreaded Tamil Exam First…

Well, It’s less than 30 days to my Public Exam from today, so just Wish me Good Luck, along with all the best and all that stuff:D

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

      Smilidon..

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I’ve started working on scrillions of projects, which eventually got too idle to progress, and are lying quitely on a Drive D[now H, due to my Recent Linux Crash] in my Harddisk, waiting for their time….

One such thing is Smilidon. It never got off the Blank-Project-With-Just-Class1.vb stage. But, however, when I got home after finishing my Public Practicals, I just didn’t want to study Tamil[I didn’t want to sleep:D]. So, I just revisited H:\YuviProjects, and started off with Smilidon…

Well, a bit of backgrounder about Smilidon : It was inspired by CMD[the DOS Emulation layer on Windows]/Monad/bash. So, I think you should’ve guessed what it is now : A Command line Interface, with the Power of bash/Monad and simplicity of CMD.exe…

      Ok, enough Bashing
Bragging. Here’s the Code. It’s hosted on eSnips. I’ve released 0.0.1.1 and 0.0.1.2 versions. I showed the 0.0.1.1 version to Ramesh yesterday morning, and he was, sortof, Impressed by Code Quality, though I donno if it was worth it. So people, why don’t you download 0.0.1.2 and see if that code Quality thing is worth it ? Fancy I’d be knowing much Better in College…

And, thanks to Aswin for pointing me to eSnips : They offer 1 GB of free Storage and are still in Beta. Their Client logs me off freqently, but, I still sortof like their interface sooo much that I’m sticking with them….. There’s Scheduled Downtime of some of their servers today and tomorrow, but I haven’t been having any problems till now….

One more thing though : After reading quite a lot of Joel on Software articles, I just can’t resist but want Source Control and Such Kinda stuff for my Code. But, problem is, since I’m using the Express editions, neither Visual SourceSafe nor the GotDotNET Source Control Systems work with it. Any Suggestions guys ?

And this time, I’d want you people to get a copy of that Code, and comment on how it is. OK ? And, Not Like Last time😀

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

      Blogging From Flock

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Haha! How nice it is to actually be Blogging from a Normal[?] Windows Application instead of from a TextArea. Anyway, Thanks to Ramesh for reccomending Flock to me. And, yeah it works….

However, there’s one really really really really strange thing. Longtime readers of my Blog will remember BaBIE, one of my First .NET Projects. It’s quite well Documented in my now-defunct Projects Blog. Strange thing is, of the 13 things listed here as main features of Flock, 9 of them are Features originally designated for BaBIE! Coincidence, huh ?

Maybe, I could restart BaBIE from scratch sometime later[The Old Code is full of Bad Coding Practices that makes me Shudder after reading Joel On Software.]

      Date with .NET…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, It’s been really really really overdue. It should’ve been here on the 13th of February, but it’s here only on the 26th of February. And, that’s also because Shiva’s Blogged about it before me. Well, well done Shiva, you beat me to it:D

Well, it’s about the Date With .NET, my Second ever Microsoft Event. This one was only for Students, unlike my First Event, which was mainly for Professionals. But, as it turned out, they had a bit different interpretation of the word Students : College Students. Infact, we were the only School Students there. Kinda makes you feel good, doesn’t it ? Especially if a College was answering “Amarnath Reddy“[Whoever it is] as the guy who sent the first Email….

The First event was[ofcourse] the keynote, by the Vice Chancellor of Anna University. The things that happened when he came on to speak virtually killed us six students from shock : The College Students started booing and clapping, virtually not allowing him to speak! He Virtually had to hasten himself to leave… Well, and I was thinking that our School kids were bad…

Then came the event about VC++2005. Well, it was quite some Mixed reactions in our Group, since one[Krihna] just hated C/C++, while two more, Shiva and Abu, just sorta Loved it. But, when that guy started Bashing Turbo C for obvious reasons and giving concrete reasons for them, both Abu and Shiva were won over. And, when he showed what you can do in VC++ but can’t in TC, Shiva had become such a Convert that he had both the Windows Platform SDK, DirectX 9.0 SDK as well as VC++2005 Express installed in his system the very next day, notwithstanding that the next day was his Exams![And he’s a guy who takes exams seriously, you know:P].

Anyway, poor guys, three of them had to leave at half-time for some sorta Dance Practice, which left Me, Abu and Krishna for the Quiz and the second event about Data Mining in SQL Server. Well, I think I got quite some of the answers in the Quiz correct : I got the $1 CEO Question correct, as Steve Jobs. And, thing is, I could answer quite a number of questions on the actual Quiz Finals. Sortof, looks like wherever I go, the final quiz is a lot easier than the Prelims[Wasn’t that supposed to be the other way round ]. Anyway, most of the [troublesome] college Guys had left at half-time too, so this one was much Quiter, though that Amarnath Reddy Gang was still there….

Well, sorta looks like I’m allergic to Databases[Strange, considering my Cousin Sudar is an MCDBA/Linux-Sun-OSS Guy]. Even in the last event I attended, I sorta couldn’t get a thing of that SQL Server Session. Maybe, I’d try learning more Database Stuff in my post-Public Exam Holidays…

But, the event started only at 12’O Clock, but we were there by 9:30, and the most eventful time was from 10:00 to 11:30. More on that later…

Anyway, My Brother‘s Started Cringing already, to play some stupid Cricket. So, fancy going to his blog and advising him to something useful, like, say write a Blog ?[If I say that, that’d be World War III].

Just one more bit added to this long long long post : I’m thinking of listening to some Podcasts/Vediocasts/Screencasts. First choice, ofcourse, was Channel9. But, I’m having a lot of trouble downloading Vedeo from Channel9 : First I was getting a Not Authorized Exception, and now a Device not Ready Exception. I was able to get the Screencasts and Podcasts in though, so this thing still Preplexes me. Any Help Guys ? I’m using Free Download Manager on recommendation from My Cousin Sudar.

And, What Podcasts do you Listen to ? I’m looking for some good Podcasts, so if you know of any, just drop in a Comment..

Thanks, and keep the Comments coming….

      Telepathic Keyboard…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Here comes my First News post. Well, Medgadget, a Blog devoted to Medical breakthroughs and like stuff, was on Top, and this thing caught my Eye : A Telepathic Keyboard! Nothing could be more Geeky, though It’s still a Long way from being as fast as a regular QWERTY Keyboard.

Exert from the MedGadget Post :

This way it takes five to 10 minutes to write a sentence,” according to Kaplow…A lot of time is taken up affixing the electrodes to the volunteer’s scalp, a procedure which usually last for about one hour.

“The breakthrough will come when we develop a contact-free EEG, something that looks like a cap, says Kaplow, who expects progress on this front during the current year.

Well, I’d be the first one to get that Cap If I can, provided I can type as fast as I can think, which is quite high[since I consider my a Human:D].

Well, if you’re like me, always infront of your Computer, unwilling[and unable:(] to do any sort of Physical Exercise, then, Microsoft Research’s got some serious stuff for you. Microsoft Research are those Ph.Ds from various Universities around the World, who work on some Really cool and academic stuff, which may or maynot becoma an actual Product….

Anyway, here it goes : StepUI. Well, it sounds an awful lot like NextSTEP or GNUStep, but it’s quite different in that it’s a real, unvirtual, actual, physical step. The kinda step that you actually make during those Rare times when we step out from the Computer:D

Well, if this thing’s made into an actual Product, imagine finding stuff like this in a Windows Box :

Stomp Right Foot, Stomp Left Foot and Jump up and down to reboot System….

Well, kinda cool, right ?:D But, looks like it’ll be much more useful for stuff like, say, reading RSS Feeds on a 70 inch Plasma Screen or Cycling through your Media Library Collection or, like venting out your anger on a Misbehaving System:D

Well, looks like I can’t keep all of Scoble’s feeds. Exams were over today, and hope to trim them out tomorrow…

      Tagging….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, well well, I got caught in my own Net : I started a Tagging game to escape from a Particular Tag, and in the end I got caught in it. Sortof, usual stupidity of mine….

Well, Sunil’s tagged me, so, err, have a look at Sunil’s Response here for an Example.

      So, here it goes :

      What is a tag?
A tag is when a friend sends you some questions that you need to answer in your blog and then pass on the tag.

The tag that I got has the following instructions as mentioned in his blog –

      1. The tagged victim has to come up with 8 different points of their perfect lover.
      2. Need to mention the Gender of the person.
      3. Tag 8 (or as many as possible) victims to join this game leave a comment on their comments saying they?ve been tagged.
      4. If tagged the 2nd time, there?s no need to post again.

      Here goes my response-

      1. Must Must Must NEVER NEVER EVER WATCH ANY MEGA Serial. Hope you know what I mean.
      2. Should be a Techy Person.
      3. Should know to seperate between Marketing Crap and real useful Stuff.
      4. Speaks out what she thinks, rather than what she thinks she must think..
      5. Should be Practical more than Sentimental
      6. Should have a Reading speead of ~1Kwpm. Well, if you’ve read Sherlock Holmes, you’d know what I mean.
      7. Should judge people on Core Values like Intelligence, Rationality, etc, rather than extra-fittings like, say, Bank Balance, or type of Silk Sari, or Amount of Gold things, and all those queer strange things present in my Cousins…
      8. Should be Understanding, like say, when I’m in an all-nighter at work…

Well, there it goes : 8 Points. And, I’m supposed to tag some more people, so, I’m tagging Sharath and Ammu. I would’ve tagged Abu, Shiva and Krishna, but that’d get me into a whole splew of Problems in School. And, even I wouldn’ve responded, if not for heavy pounding from Sunil😀

Thanks, and Keep the Comments coming…

      Peak of Usability…

Well, I’m a big fan of Joel Spolsky. His Forums on JoelonSoftware.com are quite simple and functional. And, they’ve also got the most Signal-to-Noise Ratio i’ve seen. And, Joel’s clearly documented the process of why The Forum is so simple like that. And, I consider it to be a success when a Guy like this can make a post.

[Tech]Seemingly Memory Optimization Trick for Class B people….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, let me explain the title a bit. According to me, there are 4 kinds of computer Users :

      • Class A, who don’t know anything, and know that they don’t know anything
      • Class B, who know something, and think they know everything
      • Class C, who know something, and know that they know only something
      • Class D, who know more than something, and know that they know more than something

Well, Class A would be my Dad : He knows that he doesn’t know anything, about computers, that is.[Note to Self : There’s a Sneaky Creature behind my back, so be careful] Class B would be me about a year ago : I had no idea of the internet, infact, I thought that .NET = the Web;) Thankfully, due to the Internet, Wikipedia, MSDN, CodeProject, Blogs and my Cousin Sudar, I’m now in Class C.

OK. If you’ve been reading a lot, you’dve come across this before, but if you haven’t hear. Now, a Class B guy opens up a .NET app, goes to task manager, and finds rocket-high Memory consumption. So, he thinks, “Ooh! This app is *bloated* and takes up soooo much memory. No wonder it was made by Microsoft“.

#Region “Feel Free To Ignore This If You Don’t Like Theory”

What he doesn’t know is that what Task Manager calls as “Mem Usage”, is really “Working Set Memory Usage”. Well, to understand Working Set, we have to understand the concept of “Paged Virtual Memory Management”, which is used by Windows. Now, let me get a nice analogy here. The Working Set is like a Scratch Page for your Maths : It’s fast, it’s on your RAM, and it’s the place where you do most of your calculations. In Single-tasking Environments like DOS, you had only one Page do do everything on. So far, so good…

Now, in a Multi-Tasking Environment like Windows, Each Process gets it’s Own Scratch Page. It can see only it’s own Scratch Page, not another Process’s Scratch Page.

If you’re allocating so much memory that this Scratch Page is full, then Windows writes that to disk, and you get a New Page. If you want to access anything in your older Page, Windows just loads that Page back, and reads that value for you. So, you can never run out of Memory, even if you’re allocating 257 MB of Memory with a System that has only 256 MB of RAM, Windows uses Paging to allocate that much Memory. And, all this is transparent to you. You can just pretend that the System had Unlimited Memory, and allocate as much as you want. This system is known as a Virtual Paging Memory System. Hope I’m clear till now. If I am not, then just read this article on Wikipedia on Virtual Memory.

So, the Working Set is just the amount of stuff you’ve stored in Your Current Scratch Page. This, is what Task Manager reports, and it does not count all those Previous Scratch Pages. It’s like, you’re writing a Maths Exam, and just submit the last page you worked on.

So, inorder to get an actual Value of how much Memory your app is using, you need to get the size of all your Pages. And, this Value, confusingly called VM Size by the Task Manager, is almost always higher than than the Working Set, since pages which are old and not frequently accessed are not loaded by Windows untill they are called. You can view this in the Task Manager itself by going to View – Select Columns and checking the Virtual Memory Size checkbox. This gives a realistic View of how much Memory your App is using.

Now, also, when an App is minimized, windows unloads all the Pages of the app into Disk. So, the Working Set appears drastically Reduced, but the VM Size remains the same.

      #End Region

Still with me ? Good. Now, I’ll show you a neat Trick that satisfies Class B Users by reducing the apparent Memory Usage of your app reported by Task Manager in just 2 Lines of Code. So, if one of your Boss/PM/Teacher/Departmenal Head keeps saying how much memory a .NET app is taking, just use this trick to convince them.

So, you first declare this Declare statement, declaring a Win32 API call. It’s called SetProcessWorkingSetSize :

      Private Declare Function SetProcessWorkingSetSize _
      Lib "kernel32.dll" _
      (ByVal hProcess As IntPtr, _
      ByVal dwMinimumWorkingSetSize As Int32, _
      ByVal dwMaximumWorkingSetSize As Int32) _
      As Int32

And, somewhere in your app, prefereably in the end of the Load Event or somewhere else, just keep this piece of code :

      SetProcessWorkingSetSize _
      (System.Diagnostics.Process.GetCurrentProcess.Handle _
      ,-1,-1)

So, we are passing the SetProcessWorkingSetSize Function the handle of our Process, and setting the minSize and maxSize to -1, meaning that Windows will Trim them to lowest possible Value. As soon as this line of code executes, you’ll find that Task Manager Reports a Mem Usage of below 1 MB. But, VM Size would be normal for a .NET app…

This actually doesn’t Optimize Memory Usage, but just makes it look like your app is consuming less memory than it really is. Most useful in situations to convince people who don’t understand that Windows gives Memory to people as they need it, so Memory Usage isn’t actually that Importand for stability of other Apps….

Bottom Line: If you don’t understand any of the Crap I wrote above, just remember this : If someone is asking you to reduce their .NET Memory Consumption, just fake it to them with the Above code.

P.S. Man,this took a whole hour! I just can’t believe time flies sooo fast when you are doing something you love…

If you’re still with me, I’d want to hear a comment….:D

Why don’t they get it ?

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

I mean, why don’t these DD people get it ? When Sahara ONE was transmitting thes India-England Series, I always watched them, even though DD was also transmitting. Why ? Because, every other half hour, they’ll get two people to replace the normal English Commentary with a Hindhi one. Problem is, the English Commentators are located on the spot, so they can easily see that a ball is heading towards a Fielder and don’t get excited about it. But, these Hindhi Commentators get the same view as the viewers, and so get Overly Excited mistaking a single for a four, and vice versa.

And, on top of wasting your Adrenaline, they are actually pretty bad Commentators : When in Yesterday’s match, when Irfan was given not out to a catch since it actually hit his helmet, the Commentator casually remarked that Irfan was lucky that he was caught off a No-Ball! When that catch was taken, it was English commentary, and the English Commentators had it clear that it hit the helmet. And, When this guy comes up and says he was caught off a no-ball, that’s pretty stupid…

And, need I mention that a good Majority of People in India ACTUALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND HINDI ? Maybe, they don’t know that many languages beside Hindi exist. Atleast, localize it, like they do for the Regional Servie. Or, use English. Heck, they won’t be doing both, and use only Hindi. Bad…..

Bottom Line: Would a Linuxie like it if Linux was available only in Finnish, because that was Linus Trovald’s native Language ? No. Would a Cricket Fan be happy when commentary is available only in Hindi because some braindead Moron in Government Middle-Management decided all people in India speak only Hindi ? No…

P.S. I don’t mean to offend Hindi or Hindi Speaking People. I only mean to offend those DD Officials[sic].

      Welcome to Chennai…

Well, Wikipedia is turning out quite a few Gems. One of them which I found today, and which made me laugh for almost half an hour while reading through this, is this Article on
      Madras Bashai Vocabulary
      and
      Madras Bashai
. The First Article has an almost complete list of Words used in this Innovative connotation by the Chennaiites. I’ve heard most of them, though not used any:D And, the second one has a bit of history, and has some common Sentences, which are absolutely hilarious to Read, yet so commonplace to hear.

      Man, I love Wikipedia:D

P.S. I think the first Article was written by a Passionate College Student. Read it, and you’ll feel it:D

      Mission Accomplished!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, some 3 Months back, Dad bought me an 80 CD Capacity CD Pouch. And, I vowed to fill it with Linux CDs. Fully. To the Brim. Only Linux. All 80 CDs. And, today morning, I have accomplished it! Man, doesn’t it feel wonderful, having so many distros, most of which you’d never use!:D

Anyway, here’s the boring list of Distros I have :

      1. Gnoppix
      2. SimplyMEPIS
      3. Knoppix 3.9
      4. Ubuntu 5.1 LiveCD
      5. aLinux 12.6 LiveCD
      6. GNUStep 0.9.4.2 LiveCD
      7. Fedora Core 4
      8. FSBIE – Variant of FreeBSD LiveCD
      9. PC-BSD 1.0 RC2
      10. Ubuntu Linux 5.1
      11. SuSE 9.1
      12. Mandriva 2006
      13. Mono-Live CD
      14. FreeBSD
      15. PCLinux 0.9.2
      16. Looking Glass 3D LiveCD 2.30
      17. Slackware
      18. Edubuntu 5.10
      19. Knoppix 4.0
      20. SuSE 10
      21. Gentoo 2005.1
      22. Gentoo 2006.1 Live+Install CD
      23. Fedora Core 5
      24. Damn Small Linux
      25. WinLinux

Well, If you’re still with me, know that I lied : I filled all 80 of them only because I have two copies of SimplyMEPIS. So, I actually have 1 Slot still left, but can’t seem to find any Single CD Distro to fill it up. Any Ideas guys ? Only significant distro I’m missing is Debian, but, I really don’t want it…. And, KUbuntu, but I’ve already got Ubuntu and KDE Seperately, so it won’t count, right ?

Well, a typical, classical African Spam. So, instead of just keeping it in my Spam Box, I just decided to give my feedback to the spammer :

Hi Dr. Patrick Allain, I think I am good enough to
detect a Phishing attack like this. Spelling Mistakes,
Wrong Capitalization and a great eye for Details mark
a really good spammer. And, I saw all these here :
You got the name of a Plane which Crashed, saw the list of
the passengers who died, found the name of the man whose
Country couldn't be determined, Harvested my eMail
from somewher(probably my Blog), and sent me this
      Mail...

Kudos to you man, but I'm not falling for this...

On the Other Hand, I do have respect for your
abilities, and I think you could put them to good use

And, I actually got a reply for this from that spammer! :

thank you alot mr yuri.well i do not have much to write
since you are convience inside you that it is a game.
thats ok .but for accepting me as a friend,i appreciate it
and will keep intouch with you.

      kwame jacobs

Not to be outdone, I replied to this as well :

More spelling mistakes.. Dude, you've gotta get a
Spell Checker if you wanna convince people that you're
      serious:P

Well, maybe that guy’s abandoned that email ID, but I’m still to get a Reply for this….

Spam is so much fun, isn’t it ?:D

      [Math]Proving 2+2 = 0 and other incredible stuff

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Update: Well, hawkeye posted a comment, spotting my grave Mistake. Silly me : I’ve lost more than one Mark in more than one Maths Paper more than once, and yet I make the same mistake. Stupid me:D Thanks hawkeye, for correcting me before I gave that to my Maths Teacher and get spanked:D

No Joke. I got this during a boring Morning before Second Revision English II Exams. So, I’ve got proof that 2+2 = 0. After trying to find a mistake in this for some 2 hours yesterday night, I’m posting this here. I’m probably wrong, but I can’t find out where I am wrong. So, here we go :

      (a) 12 = 1
      (b) (-1)2 = 1

      (c) From (a) and (b), 12 = (-1)2

      (d)Therefore, 1 = -1
Reason : If Powers are equal, bases can be equated

      (e) Assume 2+2 = x
      (f) (2 x 1) + (2 x 1) = x
      Reason : Since 2 = 2 x 1

      (g) (2 x 1) + (2 x -1) = x
      Reason : Since 1 = -1 [From (d)]
      (h) 2 + (-2) = x
      (i) 2 – 2 = x
      (j) 0 = x

      (k) Substituting x = 0 in (e),
      2 + 2 = 0

So, this is for a specific case. It can be easily Generalized into a generic form :

      x + x = 0

Also, from this, you get :
      x = -x

Well, the proof also gives a really interesting Corrollary : Every Number is Equal to any other Number!

      Assume any Number1 = x

Then, according to Proof above :

      x + x = 0
      2x = 0 – (1)

      Assume any Number2 = y

      Then,

      y+y = 0
      2y = 0 – (2)

      So, from (1) and (2),
      2x = 2y

Dividing both sides by 2, we get :
      x = y

So, any Number is equal to any other Number! Cool, isn’t it ? It also has quite nice implications. Like, I owe someone Rs. 1000. Since, according to the proof, I take x = Rs. 1000 and y = Rs. 1. So, since x = y, I can just pay Rs. 1, since It is equal to Rs. 1000! And, if someone owes me Rs. 1, I can just invert the process, and get Rs. 1000, while ofcourse it can backfire and they can pay me Rs.(-)1000, since obviously, Rs.(-)1000 = Rs. 1000 = Rs. 1.

Well, heard of the word Paradox ? I’m feeling it….

Well, it’s got more : All Fractions and Divisons equal 1, since the Numerator and the Denominator will be equal! And, they will also equal any number, without constraint, since 1 can be equal to any number!

Man, Maths will be sooooooooooooo much Easier : I can give any value as answer to any questions, and it will be correct! You’ll get 100 out of 100 every time! But wait, 100 out of 100 might as well be equal to 0 out of 100, because 0 = 100. Paradox:D

So, where am I wrong ? What part of the proof is wrong ? I sincerely really Don’t know, so you’ve really gotta help me find the fault with this…..

If you’re Still with me after this long post, I want your comments…

      Moving to GMail…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I’m abandoning Yahoo Mail and moving to GMail Today. I’ve unsubscribed from All my Newsletters[Which I never read anyway], changed my Topcoder Profile and my .NET Passport. And, it looks like, I’ve made neccessary arrangements, and I’ve also set up Auto-Forwarding from the Yahoo Account to my GMail Account. So, even though Sudar gave me a GMail Invite quite a long time ago, I’m starting to use it only now. So, If you wanna mail me, you can either mail me at yuvipanda@yahoo.co.in, or yuvipanda@gmail.com. But, You’ll recieve the response only from yuvipanda@gmail.com. Spammers Welcome:D

The main reason I switched was Yahoo Mail’s Pathetic SPAM Filtering and Pathetic Response Times. Well, at last count, my SPAM box contained 42 pieces of Mail, of which only 12 were actual Spam, but, the Rest were False Positives! Pathetic, isn’t it ?

Well, Yahoo!, so, pretty much get your act together and improve it. Ramesh said that he’s got Beta version of Next Gen Yahoo Mail, and it rocks. So, let’s wait for it…

      Till Then………….GMail!

Thanks, and Keep the comments coming….

Why I am not using Captchas….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, recently, Aswin and logic said I should enable captchas. Well, I’m not going to, unless some things change, and change dramatically…

It’s a matter of Scale. I get around 2 pieces of comment spam a week. And, it takes me 3 clicks to remove them. So, on an average, in one week, I’m spending 6 extra clicks on comment spam…

On an average, I get 7 comments a week. So, assuming an average CAPTCHA length of 6 chars, thats 6 x 7 = 42 Keystrokes! And, not to mention that a single mistyped keystroke will mean a new captcha…

So, at the current Scale and rate of Comment SPAM, it’s 7 times more expensive on the average to enable Captchas! So, I’m not enabling them…. And, to anyone who’s getting fewer than 4 pieces of Comment SPAM a week, I encourage you to disable Captchas and enable Anonymous Commenting…..

P.S. Well, maybe I’m reading too much Eric Sink and Joel Spolsky😀

      [Netbeans]Installation…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi people. Now, I’m finally trying to learn Java, at the advice of Aswin and Sudar. Aswin reccommended Netbeans 5.0. Since I’m a download junkie, I had it already in my HDD, so I started the Install…

Not, such a good first Impression. The install options were simple. The Buttons looked almost real. But, I ran into lots of problems, though none of them resolvable by me..

First, the interval between me clicking the executable and the Install Window showing up was 6 minutes of intense Hard Disk activity. That’s OK with me. Heck, VS 2005 took 15 mins for the main window to show up. But, it showed me a progress window. Well, I guess I should stop complaining…

The Install Program was good. Very Simple. Except that it tried to install the Sun Server in a non-standard path out of the Program Files Folder, which I had to fix. I was able to start the actual installation in about 15 secs….

But then started my Problems… The setup app spawned a java.exe process, which

      1. made 100% CPU Utilization
      2. Grew to over 150 MB!
      3. And, Invalidated all other Windows!

      I can live with 1, I can live with 2, but I can’t  live with 3.

#Region “Skip This If you don’t like Theory”

Well, let me tell you about Windows invalidation. I do not know if it is the correct term, but I’ll call it that anyway. I think you would have experienced this frequently : The Window turns white and the Title bar remains correct. Usually, this happens if the Window is so busy doing something that it does not respond immediately to the WM_PAINT Message. So, the Window is not painted, so it’s all White. So, that window is invalidated. It mostly occurs when the app is doing some heavy processing, like in a very big and complex loop… Got it?

      #End Region

So, what actually happened was, EVERY WINDOW GOT INVALIDATED! So, I can’t do any work in any app until this half an hour Install finishes! They’re all White, and they don’t respond to clicks. If they do respond, they do so after, huh, 10 or 20 secs……  I do not know what is the cause of this, but I’ve heard that WindowsForms v1.0 used to cause this, but it’s fixed in v2.0. Maybe, Swing too has the same problem…. I’ve gotta ask someone who actually knows Java about this:D

Anyway, so It’s Installed in there. I’ve not yet started it. I’m looking for a good Java tutorial for, huh, let’s say Dummies:D So, I’m writing a Series on how I’m doing with NetBeans….

So, thanks, and keep the comments coming…. I’d like some Java expert to tell me something about that Invalidation Problem….

Like, I can teach it in 2 mins to ANYONE and they’ll learn to use it to it’s full Capacity! And, however hard yout ry, you just cannot make a Syntax Error! It’s case-insensitive, just as I like it.

Well, I didn’t design the Language. It was designed by Cliff L. Biffle, a Google Employee. Well, I can’t find any decent Interpreters for it, so I forgot it….

Yesterday night, while deseperately trying to sleep, I just got that Idea : Our own HQ9+ Interpreter! So, first thing in the morning[Well, not exactly the first], I started up VS 2005 and started it. It was complete, with testing and debugging, in just 15 min!

It has some really great productivity featuers. Some programming tasks that take many lines and hours of code in other languages can be accomplished with a single character in HQ9+!

It’s a revolution in Enterprise RAD! It helps to create added Enterprise Value to ehancing the productivity of your Enterprise! It is blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Download the code here, and the executable here, and be on your way to increaseing your Productivity Manyfold using our market-leading HQ9+ Interpreter!
      #End Region

      #Region “Truth”

Well, that’s for Marketing. Real truth is, HQ9+ is an Esoteric Programming Language! Well, Esoteric Programming Languages are the perfect examples of Nobodyware as described by Eric Sink : The Developer creates it, but Nobody uses it:D So, the sole reason for it’s existance is for the pleasure of the Creator…

Well, HQ9+ is pretty much the simplest Esoteric Language, so I implemented it.

      Well, a small intro :

      • It has 4 Instructions
      • H, which prints “Hello World!”
      • Q, which prints the entire source of the program. Try doing this in C# or VB.NET, and you’ll see how hard it gets:D
      • 9, which prints the Lyrics of the 99 Bottles of Beer Song. Note that since I’m creating an interpreter which must conform to the standards, I’m using this song.
      • +, which increments an internal accumulator. And, in consistent with standard Data Hiding Practices, there is no way to access that accumulator….:D
      • Everything else is a comment! This has the side effect that ANY English Text is a valid HQ9+ Program! This post is a Program! Heck, even the Shakespeare wrote a HQ9+ Program when he wrote A Merchant of Venice:D

So, here are some example programs :

      Hh

This one prints Hello World! Twice…

      9

This on prints the Lyrics of the Song 99 Bottles of Beer twice…

      ++++++++++h

This stores the value 10 in the accumulator, and prints Hello World!

      hhQ9++h

This prints Hello World Twice, then prints the program, hhQ9++h, once, then prints the lyrics of the song 99 Bottles of beer, increments the accumulator twice, and the n prints Helllo World again. Pretty simple, huh! 😀

Well, I’ll be writing more Examples after some time, since reading that Marketing Hoopla Section just made my mind swim….;)

      #End Region

Anyway, just try it:D It’s quite well commented, though no rocket science in that code…

Thanks, and keep the comments coming….

      [NetBeans]First Start…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Now, previously, I’ve written about my First Experiences with Installing Netbeans. I came out with a not-so-favourable Impression, but Aswin reminded me that It actually required a min of 384 MB of RAM. So, I’m not complaining. But, Still, I don’t know why, Visual Studio 2005, which is far more bigger, is much faster on my system. Maybe, it’ll change tomorrow, for reasons I’ll post tomorrow:D

So, I started it up. Well, it took exactly 4 mins 25 seconds for the Window to show up, invalidated. Then, it took 3 minutes 13 seconds more for the contents to show up. Well, but then was my Complete Dismay : My Desktop is not a standard WinXP Desktop. Two days before, my System would’ve looked like OS X. Today, it’s profused with Dragonz. So, I customize my Desktop a lot, and it Net beans doesn’t even reflect my setting! My Tabs look different in NetBeans than in any other app. Well well well, what can I say? Nothing. I don’t know anything about Swing, so I can’t say anything about it….

But then, when I tried to create an empty project, it took some 3 or 4 mins to finish up. And, then, It took some 10 or 20 secs for a single CLICK TO REGISTER!…

Well, I thought the Minimum Requirement label was like how it was in VS 2005 : You can easily ignore it:D But, turns out to be otherwise… So, I’m giving up Netbeans right now, but not for long:D

      [Tech]VB.NET Scripting

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi guys. Lately, I’ve been into a number of Late Bound, Dynamically Typed Languages. But, the .NET Framework itself ships with two Dynamic Languages. One is easy to spot, in the form of JScript.NET. But, the other one is much more mainstream and harder to spot: It’s VB.NET. Yes, VB.NET can be turned into a Dynamic Language with just TWO Lines of Code. Well, I know many VBers know this, but for those who don’t here are those 2 lines:

      Option Strict Off
      Option Explicit Off

Well, I know turning them on is considered a good practice, and they are on by default. But, setting them to off lets you do some pretty amazing things, like :

      d= 100
      console.writeline(d.GetType) 'Prints System.int32

      d = 123123123123123
      console.writeline(d.GetType) 'Prints System.int64

      d = "Hello Guys!"
      console.writeline(d.GetType) 'Prints System.String

      d = new System.Diagnostics.Process
d.Start("cmd.exe") 'This ACTUALLY starts a new a new Command Window
      Console.Writeline(d.GetType) 'Prints System.Diagnostics.Process

So, the type actually changes every time you assign something to it! Well, that’s not amazing, since you can just do the same in C#. But, it’s elegant, without casts[which I absolutely hate]. So, this is called

      Late Binding

      .

And, variable d is not declared before. Well, what’s the advantage of this ? Well, nothing. Although some people will say that Boxing and Unboxing along with Late Binding will slow down performance, I don’t think that will be very noticable unless you’re doing some very deep recursion or nesting.

Only catch is, as of now, VS won’t offer you complete Intellisense, and Late Binding uses Reflection, which is quite a bit slower. But, VB9 actually goes a really long way into solving these problems. Have a look at the VB Future section at MSDN for some more cools tuff about VB9.

And, what is the use of it ? Well, with this, VB.NET is the most powerful Scripting Language I Know

. How ? Well, the .NET Framework is all encompassing, and I can always call into the Win32 API if I want something not there. And, mostly, whatever I want to do, .NET offers it. So, why learn something new, when I can use a powerful language as my Scripting Language ? And, that too, a language I love:D

So, here’s a small script I wrote, using my previous snippet to get thumbnails of images, to convert a folder of photos into 800×600 size, enough to reduce size without compromizing quality:

      Dim s As String = "C:\School Pics\100OLYMP\Edited"

      d = New IO.DirectoryInfo(s)
      i =Drawing.Image
      Console.writeline (d.FullName )
      console.WriteLine(d.GetFiles.Length)
      Console.ReadKey
      For Each f In d.GetFiles

      If f.Extension.ToUpper.Contains("JPG") Then
      Console.WriteLine ("Processing : " & f.FullName)
      i = drawing.Image.FromFile(f.FullName)
      i.GetThumbnailImage(800,600, Nothing, System.IntPtr.Zero).save _
      (d.FullName & "\Thumb" & f.Name & ".jpeg", _
      drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Jpeg)
      End If
      Next
      console.ReadKey

Prefix that with a Module and Sub Declaration, and you’ve got a little neat script that runs fast, and converts everything in the folder I specified to my Size of 800×600. Well, try doing that in, huh, Batch Files, and see the pain….:D

Well, I’m investigating how latebound calls are translated to IL, and I’ll post something about it very soon….

Till then, keep coming, and keep commenting:D

And, thanks for reading this rather long article…

        [Tech]VB.NET Scripting

        by justin james ·

        In reply to [Tech]VB.NET Scripting

Turning off strict & explicit really do not save you many lines of code. Even in a scripting language, declaring your variables is a good practice, because it helps you maintain proper scoping. Furthermore, yes, VB.Net as a scripting language is mildly handy because you have access to the .Net Framework. But if you look at the language, in and of itself, it is a very weak language with few benefits. OOP and “quick and dirty” simply do not mix well. If you’re just dealing with what used to be primitives (number types, chars, strings) this system works fine. But as soon as you want to do anything deeper, you’re back to declaring your variables again, as your example does with the Drawing.Image object. If there is one thing that is tricky to maintain, it is code that mixes OOP and non-OOP code, which is exactly what you have done here.

Worst of all, VB.Net, even with these options off, still does not accomplish many of the things that an interpreted scripting language can. Just try, for example, to put main program code in one file, and the business logic in an external file, and have a configuration file let the main program know which business logic to use. In an interpreted language, this is a cinch. You just slurp the business logic into an array, hashtable, whatever, then run eval() on the appropriate part as per the configuration file. VB.Net has no eval() system. For that reason alone, it makes a poor scripting language.

      Saki-yea….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi people. I’ven’t blogged for about 2 days now. That’s because I’m busy teaching Saki. Well, Saki ? Well, Sunil‘s friend is Amigo, and mine is Saki:D Well, in an area, she’s less powerful than Amigo, and in some more. Like, Amigo is 64 Bit, but Saki is only 32 Bit, and doesn’t have HT. But, she’s quicker than Amigo, since She’s got 1280 MB of Memory, over Amigo’s 1024 MB. And, she can store more, because she’s got a 240 GB Storage, over 200 GB of Amigo:D And, she has a really awesome nVidia GeForce Grafix card.

But then, she’s all White and a bit blue, but I haven’t taken care of her looks lately, so she’s a bit dusty in places. But, her only chink in her armor is her 7 Year Old 14 inch Monitor, which looks like it won’t be replaced till it disappears in a puff of smoke. But then again, she’s like me, and doesn’t care about looks, so does not complain:D Oh, and did I mention that she can watch TV as well, with her TV Capture card ?

She runs on XP SP2, but doesn’t look anything like XP : Though she doesn’t care about her outside looks, she does care about her Inside : Yesterday she was looking like that sexy diva Mac OS X Tiger, and today, she’s filled with Dragonz. And, she just runs anything and everything fine, and her buttons and Tabs are really coool looking. I just love those Tabs, and had a nice fight with Aswin over why Swing didn’t support her Crazy Looking Tabs:D

Well, I don’t have a pic, because I don’t have a cam, because the 10th Exam results are not yet out, because it’s not yet June:D And, If I get School first [Probability:0.1], then I’ll get a cam… Till then, Saki will not do Modelling:D

So, I just named my PC, as I always wanted to after Sunil named his PC. Stay tuned, I’ve got more Tech Posts coming…

If you’ve managed to read till here without nausea, schizoperania and boredom, leave a comment:D

Yikes! I made it. Today, and this minute, marks the first Anniversary of me starting Blogging. It seemed a pretty short time, but one year has already been over. And, what a Year has it been! I’ve started blogging, Got a Brodband Connection, started and abandoned numerous blogs, started using Avant, predicted, unwittingly and unknowingly, that the Apple Mac OS X will run on a PC, [Scroll down to the End], became a Microsoft Student Champ, went for my First trip outisde of Home/School/Couple of other Places, got myself a Green Karate Belt, Got myself a 1 GB USB Pen in a Move I never thought I can do, made my Predictions for 2006, which are 100% true, even now, drooled over Vista, Changed my Blog Title, had a Really RTOFL experiance doing Tech Support, Tried Linux, Didn’t like it the first Time, Ranted over Stupid Programs, Tried Ubuntu and saw it ruin my System, Tagged, and Got Tagged, Cried over Herlequin Icthyosis, Moved over to GMail, Talked with a Spammer, Got myself 80 CDs of Linux, Started a lot of writing Tech Posts, Finished my Public Exams, Tried
NetBeans, Wrote a Complete Interpreter, and most of all, confused myself with a lot of things and gained a lot of Experiences.

Thanks fly out to Sudar, Aswin, Sunil, Saurabh, Sharath, Sab, Ammu, Dad and everyone whom I know and do not know. Thanks people! You’ve made my life (Infinity)x better. Thanks.

Well, that’s it. It’s been lots of Hyperlinking around, and I’ve been having a great time. And, thanks to lots of people, I hope I will continue having a great time. And, that reminds me, that I have my Public Exam Results due out next month first week[Shudder].

      [Tech]Aha! The Long awaited one…

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I’ve been really really hoping that Microsoft comes up with a Sourceforge.net killer. No, GotDotNet killed itself. It was plain pathetic. A case study of what not to do.

Well, now we have http://www.CodePlex.com. Well, it’s still in Beta, has a good number of bugs, and returns less than 3 Pages of Search Results at Google. What this means is that very few people know of it’s existence. Infact, Microsoft plans to unveil it in Late June or Early July…

There are only 19 Projects there, all Microsoft Projects, which says something… But, you just can’t go and register a new project there right now: That’s why it is called Beta. But, it runs on Team Server, which is awesome. So, this means I get good integrated Source Control. Amen:D

Right now, the Major one there is IronPython, the Python Implementation for .NET. It’s not yet moved from GotDotNet, but I betcha that anybody will ever wish GotDotNet back alive….

And, for me, I’m moving Rayo to CodePlex when CodePlex moves to Production. Well, maybe because I’m a Microsoft Fanboy. Or, maybe because I like Green color:D

      Spam Fun – Part I

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

I’ve done this type of thing before, but it wasn’t exactly fun:D Since I’ve moved to GMail, there was this one label from the beginning called Spam Fun. That’s because, I don’t exactly have any serious work to do, so my favorite hobby is to pick out messages from my SPAM box and reply to them:D

This particular spammer sent me my first mail on May 11. I had a look at my SPAM Box the next day, and this guy’s mail was on top. I opened it, and found the contents intersting. Here’s the Mail:

      Assalamu alaikum/message Urgent reply needed

       Dear Friend,

                                               Confidencial and top secret.

I know that this mail will come to you as a surprise. I am the bill and exchange manager in Bank of Africa. I Hoped that you will not expose or betray this trust and confident that i am about to repose on you for the mutual benefit of our both families.

We need your urgent assistance in transferring the sum of $11.3million immediately to your account. The money has been dormant for may years in our Bank here without any body coming for it.

We want to release the money to you as the nearest person to our deceased customer(the owner of the account)who died a long with his supposed next of kin in an air crash since July 2000.

We don’t want the money to go into our Bank treasury as an abandoned fund. So this is the reason why i contacted you, so that my bank will release the money to you as the nearest person to the deceased cutomer.

Please we would like you to keep this proposal as a top secret and delete if you are not interested.

Upon receipt of your reply, i will send you full details on how the business will be executed and also note that you will have 25% of the above mentioned sum if you agree to transact the business with us.

           Dr.Mukaila Dauda
      Bank Of Africa,Burkina Faso-West Africa

Funny:D Classical African Bank Scam Spam. Heck, it could’ve come even right out of a Spammer’s textbook. I guess lot’s of people with Millions of Dollars in African Banks died in Air Crashed:D

Since I had absolutely nothing else to do, I created a hypoethical typecast stereotypical middle aged middle class Indian business man who had no clue of the web. He’s based on a guy I actually know, but I won’t say whom:D He was the guy who insisted that he’s never had an Email Account: Only a GMail Account:) He’s a class B guy, meaning that though he thinks he knows everything, he knows nothing….

So, this imaginary guy, who I named Jagan Paes, reads this piece of Spam. He has no idea what spam is. The kind of guy a spammer would target. As he reads that, he goes OMG! I AM RICH! I AM LUCKY! LUCK IS ON ME! GOD SENT ME THIS MONEY! I AM RICH!

So, he goes and replies to the spammer, like this:

TANK YOU VERY MUCH I WANT MONY I LIKE GET MONY FROM BANK I TRUST YOU CONFIDENT I TANK VERY MUCH FOR 25 PERCRNT I AM MERCHANT IN INDIA I HAVE FOOD SHOP I NOT WANT DOLLAR I WANT ONLY RUPEE PLEASE TELL WHAT TO DO I TRUST YOU IF YOU WANT ADDRESS FONE BANK PLEASE TELL I TRUST FULL YOU PLEASE TELL I WANT MONY

                      THANKING YOU
                                                                                                                 YOUR FAITHFULY
                                                                                                               JAGAN PAES

Lots of things to notice here.

      1. The ALL CAPS: Most of Class B people I know type in all caps: They say it looks nice only then:D
      2. Spealing mistaks : Same: Most class B people can’t spell…
      3. The footer: This comes straight out of high school Letter writing. Most class B people don’t have the thinking part of the brain working, though their copy-catiness and rule-following-ness parts of the brain are in hyperdrive…

So, the spammer gets the message, and feels happy that he’s got some hapless Moron into his trap. And…

Well, I wanted to put an end to very long posts which are pretty boring to read, so I’m splitting this into a multi-part series. This is part one, and I’m goanna write a pretty much large number of parts. Believe me, this “conversation” actually got pretty much very interesting near the end. It’s not yet over though:D

Comments ? By the boatload please:D

      SPAM Fun – Part 2

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, this is Part 2 of a multi part series I am writing about my, well, playing with a spammer. You’ve gotta read Part 1 before reading part 2 to make most sense of this. Basically, what I am doing is acting to a spammer as if one hypoethical stereotypical stupid guy(“Jagan Paes”) has believed a classical African Bank Scam. Read Part 1 for the email messages I sent him….

Now, I’d sent him something to the effect of I am a stupid guy with no brains, so I believe you are really going to give me 25 percent of 11.3 Billion dollars, so contact me:D And, what astonished me was, he actually replied to me!

Here’s the Email I got from him the next day, on May 13…

      Dear  Yuvi Panda,
Thanks for your last mail in respect of my proposed business transaction  sent to you ealier. I will like to be honest with you, base on the fact that what will bring the success of this transaction is trust and understanding.

Also i wish to let you know that if you know that you will not keep this transaction secret is better you forget about it, because i have spent a lot of money in this transaction before contacting you. I  will not be happy to lose the fund.

This fund belongs to our deceased customer(MR.CHRISTAIN EICH ) From AUSTRALIAN. He died on 31/07/ 2000  along with his supposed next of kin in an air crash. He nationalized here for years before his death. He executed alot of contracts here before his death and he was also the major supplier of agricultural equipments in West Africa.

The banking law here stipulates that if such money  remains  uncliamed after 6 year, it will go to the bank treasury as unclaimed  fund. We discovered the money during our last auditing in our department. we have made all necessary enquries to find out if we can get any of his relation so that they will come for the claims but to no avail.

I decided to contact you and release the fund to you as the nearest person to the dead man because I dont want the money to go into the bank  treasury as uncliamed fund and besides nobody is coming for the fund  again.

Many Banks in African use to confiscate alot of foreigners money i our bank after the fund lying dormant in the Bank.We Poor Bankers dont gain anything if the fund is confiscated.I got this last oppurtunity at this my old aged and decided to contact you,for the mutual benefit of our both families.

The transaction has to undergo normal banking procedures of transfering inheritance fund. You will apply as the nearest person to the deceased customer while i will be here as your partner in the business, guiding you on what to do until the fund enters your account.
       For immediate execution of this transaction,you have to communicate me with those information below;
      1) your full name,
      2) your occupation,
      3) your country,
      4) your age,
      5) your banking details where you shall receive the fund so that i will email you a text of application that you will use to apply for the fund.
And i will like to know how capable you are to receive this huge amount into your account, and i hope that you will not betray me when the money enter into your account in your country?.

Upon receipt of the above mentioned,i will send you a text of application which you will use to apply to the Foreign Remittance Department in our Bank, for easy execution of the transaction.

This transaction is 100% hitch-free on both sides and has no atom of negativity on both side but you must try to keep it confidential and as a top secret as you may wish to know that we are this Bank Officials.

I once again wish to inform you that 25% of the total sum will be for you for the provision of account were we will transfer the money and the rest will be for me and my colleague who is also involved in the business. Here will be a little expencess in other to get some documents to back up this claims. Which  i feel that you will a bit assist when needed for that. Well, can it get any more classic ? A Billionaire in an almost unheard part of Africa dies with all of his family in an Aircrash. A guy at the Bank calls someone in a forgein country to share the money between himself and the forgein guy. Classy classy classy…

This guy does one more trick, asking me[remember, it’s not me, it is “Jagan Paes”], to not tell this to anyone else. Why ? Because, if this guy is a braindead guy, he would’ve got some non-braindead guy who knows that this is SPAM. So, inorder to prevent that, this guy asks me to keep this secret. Brainy….

So, he asks me for Name/Occupation/Country/Age/Bank……… I’m very happy to give it to him. Pssst, I’m not giving him my Information, I’m giving him the Information of Jagan Paes.😛

I JAGAN PAES TANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MONEY TANK YOU VERY MUCH MUKAILA DAUDA HERE DETAIL YOU ASK I GIVE FULL TRUST

                                                                                                JAGAN PAES

Well, I’ve kept the same style from my first Email : ALL CAPS, Sepling mitsaks. I really really hope that he’s called that Number, because it’s the Phone Number of Robert Scooble😀

I’ve constantly been saying TANK YOU TANK YOU to that guy many times. I guess he thinks it’s a typo for THANK YOU, but he really does not know that I’m saying that I’ll get a Tank and Shoot him:D

For the Age, I choose 41, because I was 14, and I just did a String.Reverse on it:D And, I choose Food Shop, since at that time, I had just returned from Adyar Anandha Bhavan, a local shop for Sweets/Chat/etc.. So, my mind was full of Milk Khoa and Chenna Masala, so the first thing that came to my mind was Food:D

And, KANAI KIRUKKA BANK, well, I can’t translate that piece of profanity to English, but I guess that it will come somewhere between HAPLESS MORON and CLUELESS IDIOT:D

Well, it went far more than just 2 Email Exchanges, and got really interesting towards the end. I’ll probably do one part a day, though I still donno how many parts I’ll be doing:D And, BTW, just to say, the conversation has not yet been completed, so he still doesn’t know of this, and the con:D

Comments ? I want them by the boatload:D

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, this is Part 3 and 4 of a multi-part series I am writing on a Fun Conversation I am having with a Spammer[Note the Present Continuous Tense]. Well, you better Read Part 2, and Part 1 as well before, since otherwise you’ll be missing a lot of stuff….

So, I’ve sortof mangled a spammer into thinking that I believe his piece of classical out-of-the-textbook African Bank Spam. And, just note guys, when I say I, I mean this imaginary guy called JAGAN PAES, who insists he’s never used Email-only GMail, likes ALL CAPS, and believes he’s the luckiest guy on earth because someone has contacted him to give him an unheard of amount for free:D

Well, I ignored the part in Bold[well, I made it bold] when I first read it, but I got what the ultimate aim was day before yesterday. As to what that was…. Well, I’m writing a part daily, isn’t it?:D

Well, so, this mail brings more spelling/grammar mistakes, and more promises that make JAGAN PAES go mad with Adrenaline;)

And, I also got this APPLICATION FORM FOR BANK OF AFRICA:D, the same day. It’s the second letter that that guy refers to…:

      L?che-vitrine ou l?che-?cran ? Yahoo! Magasinage.

So, this one looks a lot like some Forms I’ve typed out for Dad. Note the Email Address for supposed Bank of Africa: It’s from a website called infohq.com. Further Investigation[By Yours Truly;)] revealed that infohq.com was a site that offered Free Email. Hah! Well, this guy worked out that JAGAN PAES would have enough brains to see that a Bank won’t have an Email account from GMail or Yahoo or MSN or any public provider. So, he choose a very little known provider, with the word HQ in it, so that it’ll look like an Email to the HeadQuarters:D Clever, clever clever…

Well, I replied to him the next day in classy JAGAN PAES style;):

TANK YOU TANK YOU VERY MUCH TANKS TANKS BUT I TO TELL TO SON BANK ACCOUNT OF SON SO I NOT KNOW BANK NO SON ONLY KNOW SON TELL ME SON SEE YOU GMAIL TODAY AFTER WORK TANK YOU TANK YOU I GAVE APPLICATION TO YOU TANK

                          TANK YOU
                                                                                                                   JAGAN PAES

I guess he must’ve died a horrible death with that much TANKING, but I guess he didn’t have that in mind;) Well, notice that I’ve added another character to the Pot: JAGAN PAES’s son! Well, I gave this guy a bit better character: He knows English, knows what Spam is, is incharge of the Bank account, but still not as Intelligent as me😉

And, I just completed that Application with more Bogus Information, and sent it back to him:

I shall appreciate your prompt attention to this request.
      Yours faithfully,

      Mr. JAGAN PAES

Well, I actually didn’t double check it, and so the Application Letter went with the Address with Header as well! I actually didn’t intend to write Microsoft Corporation there, just the Address, but while copying and pasting from this page, I just mucked up things a bit. I guess that would’ve been a give away, but that guy seemed to ignore that;) And, Phone Number is Robert Scoble‘s number, as usual😉

And, I guess you should have [should] found that the Bank Account Number is a classy Fibonacci Series, and as I’ve already said, KANAI KIRUKKA, is a Profanity that I have a hard time translating to English, but it falls somewhere between HAPLESS MORON and CLUELESS IDIOT;)

Well, I actually started out to write just Part 3, but since this one got pretty big, I’ve made it Part 3+4. I guess I’ll be writing Part 5 tomorrow.

P.S. You’ve to wait for Part 5 for the most hilarious parts, the exchanges between Son and Spammer;)

      Comments? I’m really hungry…;)

      [GMail]Dotty Dotty Addresses….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I’m writing about Spammers and Fun, but I just can’t wait to post this. Here’s a neat trick that works for GMail Addresses…

Well, it looks like GMail removes dots[.] from the address! Well, this means you can give out an address like mailto:y….u……v….i…p…a…n…d…a@gmail.com, and it’ll correctly deliver the mail to mailto:yuvipanda@gmail.com!

Well, I’ve tested this, and it works. You can put as many dots as you can, and it won’t complain as long as the dots are not after the last character of your username. So, got it ?

Happy Emailing, and I’m posting Part 5 soon;)

      Spam Fun – Part 5

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, this is Part 5 of a Multi-Part series of Articles I am writing on a funny conversation I am having with a Spammer. I guess I should say you’ve to read Part 1, Part 2, as well as Part 3 & 4 before inorder to understand all of this:P. Well, I’ve promised to write a part a day, but I missed one yesterday:(( Sorry about that…

So, Part 5 talks about the conversation between the Spammer and the hypoethical son of the hypoethical guy called JAGAN PAES. Well, as I’ve said, I made this guy to be a bit more intelligent than his Dad, but not as intelligent as me;)

Well, here’s the message sent by the Son to the Spammer:

Hey, I’m Jagan’s Son. What proof have you got that you’re a bank Officer, and not a Spammer ? Your first Mail looked like a classic African Scam mail. But, since spammers usually do not reply to mail, I’m asking you to prove that you are not a Spammer and a bank officer.

Well, well well. What’s the context of the spammer getting this mail ? Well, the Son had the Bank account details, so JAGAN PAES overrode the security agreement and shows the son the Message. Well, truly, the answer to the application letter I showed you in Part 4 wasn’t sent long after this, but I showed it there just for completeness….

Well, here is the reply I got from that guy:

      Dear Friend,

Thanks for your last mail also for your understanding. I don’t really know why this question, What due you mean by Spammer? Please don’t insult me because i brought a business to your father, I have given him some of my Person Datas, as to prove him who i am. But if you still feel like to know me, i can scan and send you my International Passport as to prove myself, But meanwhile what is your Oppinion in this transaction before we move further?. And i will like to know your possition in this transaction?. Before i will send you my International Passport.

      Best regards

Ahem. So, that guy pretends he doesn’t know what is a Spammer. It’s like this: You break a glass jar, your Mom asks you who broke it, and you say that your never know what is a glass Jar! Well, pretty much same here… And, personal datas ? Well, maybe it was the bogus email addres and telephone numbers….

And, he offers me to show me his International Passport. Yikes!. I guessed that it would’ve been interesting to see that….

Here’s the email I sent him back:

Well, I’m not insulting you. And, as for my opinion, I’ll be rather Safe than Sorry. If you can prove that you are a legimitate Banker, by giving me a scanned copy of your International Passport, I think I can give the Bank details to my father. And, BTW, Dad has not told me of any Personal Datas he has given to you. Don’t take this personally, as I will be rather Safe than Sorry.

Ahem. So, I say that I’ll be safe than sorry, and I ask him to send him a copy of his International Passport. Yea, and I tell him that I[Jagan Paes’s Son] don’t know of any personal data….

Well, he did send me an “International Passport”, and I tore it apart in classical Sherlock Holmes fashion;) Well, to see that, and the “analysis”:P, well, you’ve to wait for tomorrow…

Comments, Comments, Comments…. Where are they ? I was expecting more guys/gals…. So, even if you are reading this from a RSS Aggregator, just hover over here and leave a comment, ok ?

      Spam Fun – Part 6

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

This does sound mechanical, but I’ve really gotta tell you that this is a part of a multi-part series on the “Fun” that’s going on between me and a Nigerian Scammer/Spammer. Well, I guess you’ll have to read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 & 4 as well as Part 5 if you’re to understand this…

Well, when I stopped at Part 5, I stopped at the point when the Spammer is ready to send an “International Passport” to me[JAGAN PAES/Son] to prove that he’s a legitimate spammer… err… banker;)

Well, here’s the Mail that guy sent me:

      Dear Friend,

Thanks for your urgent reply, as regards to mail find the attached message my International Passport. Here is my Profile beloew.

      1) My full name is: Dr.Mukaila Ali Dauda,
      2) Manager Foreign Remmittance Dept Bank of Africa(B.O.A)
      3) I am : 50 years old with 4 children with an aged mother and father.
      4) My house address is: No 25, suma street dapoyah Ouagadougou Burkina Faso.
      5) My private phone number: +226-7647-1708,

I have worked with the bank of Africa for many years now. i don’t want to lose this last opportunity allmighty God gave to me at this old age. I am happy that you come into this transaction, as your father can not write good english.

But onething i needed from you is to make sure you keep this transaction as a top secret because we are the bank official official here in this bank.

I don’t want you to disclosed this transaction to someone else until the fund be transferred into your father’s account. Also note that this transaction will go under nomal banking procidures.

      Best regards

      Dr.ukaila Dauda
      +226-7647-1708.

How daring he says JAGAN PAES can’t write good English ?:D Saurabh too had that same question, but I can guarantee you that JAGAN PAES’s writing style is inspired by many people from the real world I’ve met, from forums to class rooms. Want proof ? Go to ny computer releated forum, and I betcha that you’ll find atleast one post within 10 mins of looking that looks exactly like a written leave letter written to the School Principal;)

Anyway, he did send me a passport. Here’s it:

Well, I guess reading Sherlock Holmes front to back every 6 months isn’t a bad idea. Well, obviously this one is fake, but I needed proof. Sure enough 10 minutes with Photoshop gave me the proof I needed:

Here’s the word P taken from the “Passport”. Screenshot is at 16x Zoom. See the Perfectly Straight Lines ?

Though this looks very much computer generated, there’s a very small chance that the Passport Issuance Officers at Burkino Faso use Ants with Scales(tm) to draw out their letters:D. So, what I did is to write out another P, this time using Photoshop itself. I used Callibri at very low font with Anti-Aliasing turned off.

Ahem. Note any difference ?:P I can’t. So, I guess the first P and second P came from the same source, that is the P key to the left of the Square Brackets on the Keyboard. Note that I am trying to be funny, so the last sentence was an attempt to say that both the Ps, are typed out from a Keyboard. My point is, that guy said that the Passport was Scanned, while infact it was a product of Photoshop. Well, so I’ve quite proven that this Passport is fake.

Ahem. Well, I guess I could’ve written back at this point saying that the Passport has been verified as unauthentic. But, I wanted to have more fun. So, I wrote this back, as JAGAN PAES:

TANK YOU VERY MUCH SON SAY I TRUST YOU SO I RIGHT WAT I DO NOW SAY I DO WAT YOU SAY

      TANKING YOU
      JAGAN PAES

Ahem. Well, then JAGAN PAES gets back on, starts TANKing this guy again and sends the filled application letter I showed you in Part 4.

      Then, he sends me this:

      Dear Brother Jagan,

Thanks for your last mail also for you and your Son understanding. You can now send the application to the bank through the Bnak email Adress or Fax Number stated above and make sure you call me as to follow is up in the bank.
Best regards to you are your family. I pray that Almighty God will give us Understanding and Trust till we get the fund into your account.
      Yours Brother
      Dr.Mukaila Dauda.

Ahem. So, I’m supposed to send that application I showed you in Part 4 to that BANK OF AFRICA hosted by infohq.com, a free email provider.

Well, I could’ve sent it there and watch it move, but I’m never a guy that simple. So, I did something that’ll keep that spammer busy and irritated for some time. And, to know what that is, I guess you’ve to wait for Part 7:D

I want more comments, even if you’re readin this from a RSS reader!:D

      Tenth Results Out!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Ahem. My tenth Results were out today morning. 914 out of 1000. So, 91.4%. Not bad, eh ? I guess I can’t give you the URL, because the stupid Government Website doesn’t use QueryStrings for the info, so I can’t just copy-paste the URL. I guess they’re using Server.Transfer from ASP.NET, since I got an error about SQL Server being busy right on the page some 2 mins after release:D

      So, here’s how it went:

      Tamil 82
      English 164
      Maths 198
      Science 289

      Back…Sortof…

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Hi guys. I guess a string of bad news did it. Something got to my brain, and it seemed to not function properly for some two or three days. Just went with killing people in Settlers, Age of Empires and some more… Looks like things are back to normal with the internals of my brain today…. Looks…. School tomorrow…. I’ll do some more stuff after my Brain gets back to normal….

Just did a blog redesign. Not exactly a redesign, since all I did was copy and paste. I’ll have to do lots more customization, but I’ll do that once I’m back to normal…

      Wallop, Wallop, Wallop….

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

Well, I think I am starting a lot of my sentences with well, Well, but that’s beside the point:D This one is about Wallop, Microsoft’s answer to Google‘s Orkut. It’s graduating from Microsoft Research, which I lamely relate to Google Labs. And, oh boy haven’t they done it well! Wallop is much much much more like using a Desktop App than a Web app. Heck the responsiveness and UI they’ve got in Wallop is, uhm, pretty much hard work even to achieve in a Desktop App! Kudos to you guys, you’ve impressed me at first sight, even though I’ve not used it. Love at First Sight, eh?

Well, it’s in private beta now, and thanks to uber Microsoftie Krishna I got an invite. And, if you want an invite, just gimme a comment here, and I’ll send you one:D

All I can hope and pray is that the naming guys at Microsoft don’t rename Wallop into something more “appropriate”, like, say, Windows Telephony Foundation ? err, or, maybe, Windows Telepathy Foundation ? Windows Telepathy Force ?

      School

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

I am in the 11th Standard Now. I AM IN THE 11th STD! WOA THIS IS JUST SO FREAKIN AWESOME! When I joined the school in the 5th STD, my one and only dream then was to get to STD 11. That was because, atleast in our School, 11th STD means joining the NSS. Now, the NSS are like the Police of our School, supposedly maintaining discipline. Just as in real Life, most of NSS boys are pretty corrupt, but then, it’s not morally wrong being a corrupt NSS boy. And, since being corrupt doesn’t mean you hurt people, it’s pretty cool. So, all that it means is just plain Fun. Add to that that I spend lotsa time in the Computer Science Lab, and you get heaven. But anyway….

It’s been a week since School, and it’s been pretty much filled with Paronia, whatever that means. First off, many of my ol’ pals in tenth STD left our School, but to their own peril, as I learned later. But that’s for another post.

Right now, I’ve been choosen as the Academic Assitant Secretary, the Magazine Committee Secretary. The responsibility of the Academic Assitant Secretary, as you can say, is to carry a flag during Captains Day, and then do nothing. Yea, nothing. Well, maybe speak on stage somewhere once, but that’s it.

As the Magazine Committee Secretary, however, I can cut lotsa classes towards the end of the year, sorting through piles of stuff written by our School kids. But ofcourse, most of it is taken off the Internet by some thoughtful kid who didn’t want his class Magazine to contain just a front and back cover along with just a Preface. I too am guilty of that, with 95% of our last year Class Magazine being given by me, 1% being written by me. And, inorder to avoid giving the impression it’s a Yuvi’s Magazine rather than a Class Magazine, many of my articles were attributed to my Classmates. This led to the amusing Incident: “Hey Jagan your article was excellent”. “Article? WHAT ARTICLE ?”;)

And, Subjects, I have no problems with any, except for Chemistry. And, that too because of the Teacher. Like, say Snape minus the skills. Oh, and the dirty black evil loving costume as well.

Enough wasting your time I guess. Hope to get in some more posts about School Life around here, and bring back a better written SPAM Fun series as well…

Comments ? Even if you don’t have any, add them here…

[Tech]Trying to save Bytes may Byte you back!

      by yuvipanda ·

      In reply to Yuvi’s Blog

This tech post is long overdue, and has spent quite a lot of time in my drafts folder. I guess it’s atlast time for it to see the light of day, so I’m posting it…

Lemme start off with code samples right away.

What’s the output of this code snippet ?

      Dim i as Int64 = 200
      Console.WriteLine ( i.GetType.ToString )
      Console.WriteLine ( (i-10).GetType.ToString )

Compile the code in your mind, and you’ll find a lot of Syntax errors if you’re a C# guy, and the following output if you’re a VB guy:

      System.Int64
      System.Int64

Pooh. Nothing unexpected. But, wait….What’s the output of this code snippet ?

      Dim b as Byte = 200
      Console.WriteLine( b.GetType.ToString )
      Console.WriteLine ( ( b -10).GetType.ToString)

So, just like in the last example, you should get System.Byte as the output both times, right ? Wah! I told you to wait, right ?

      System.Byte
      System.Int32

So, where did that System.Int32 come from? If an operation on an Int64 results in an Int64, then why is an operation on a Byte resulting in a System.Int32? Were the consipary theorists right, after all?

Oh wait! Lemme add one more to the mix!

What’s the output of this ?

      Dim s As Short = 200
      Console.WriteLine( s.GetType.ToString )
      Console.WriteLine( (s - 10).GetType.ToString )

If you’ve been sleeping all along, you would have expected two System.Int16s, but ofcourse you weren’t sleeping, so you’ll see:
      System.Int16
      System.Int32

Uh-oh. So, what the hell is actually going on? So, to find out this, and some other things, I was digging through ECMA-355, the .NET ECMA Specs.

Aha! And, I fount out. The aptly named section 1.1.1 of the document says:

The CLI only operates on the numeric types int32 (4-byte signed integers), int64 (8-byte signed
integers), native int (native-size integers), and F (native-size floating-point numbers). However,
the CIL instruction set allows additional data types to be implemented:

Uh oh. So, what that means is, that the .NET CLI only knows about 32 Bit and 64 Bit Ints. When they say Native Int, they mean that if you implement .NET for a, say 16 bit Machine, then the CLI will “get” 16 bit Integers…

But wait, you say. The CLI already has 16 bit integers. Heck, it even has 8 bit integers!

But, ah I love to prove people wrong, and that’s why I spent the time to read that headsy Technical Document. In the same old Section 1.1.1, it says:

Convert instructions that yield short integer values actually leave an int32 (32-bit) value on the stack, but it
is guaranteed that only the low bits have meaning (i.e., the more significant bits are all zero for the unsigned
conversions or a sign extension for the signed conversions).

Well, basically, what this means is, even if you use a Byte datatype[8 bits], you are still using 32 bits. Only that the 24 extra bits are Zero, always. They just lie there, useless, taking up precious memory space which could be used for some more 1s. Same for 16 bit ints: It still uses 32 bits, but only that 16 of those are not used and left zero.

When you see Short and Byte types in the Framework, they are just a mere illussion. They are still using 32 bits, just pretending that they’re using less. That’s why, the operations return the true type, rather than the illussionary one.

Moral of the Story: Don’t use Shorts and Bytes, if your sole reason is thinking that you’re saving space: You are not….

Now, the best appreciation you could give to this small depressed kid living in a lone world surrounded by non-geeks with not many to talk to is to leave a comment here…
