my computer suddelnly stop reading a zip disk.The first thing you should do is?

Try a different or new disk. If it still doesn't work get the TIP utility from Gibson Research at:
http://grc.com/tip/clickdeath.htm

See if the disk can be read on another Zip drive.

If the disk can be read on another drive, you have a hardware problem.

If this is an external Zip drive, start by trying a new or different power supply.

If this is an internal drive, check that all cables are properly seated, and that the drive is properly recognized in device manager.

Next, CAREFULLY **** the dust out of the drive with canned air.

It is possible that the drive has failed.
I have seen used 100MB internal Zip drives for around $20 at various web based surplus PC dealers.

Should this disk contain your only current backup, - PANIC!
Actually, answers #1 and #2 are a great place to start. Another possibility is that the disk contained a boot sector virus. Should the device no longer show under My Computer or Device Manager, this is a strong possibilty.
