Make and model of External HDD?

Was it installed on her computer (or another computer)first and now you can not acces the data?

Do you know what format the HDD uses. e.g Fat32 or NTFS?

Does the unit use any sort of encryption to control access?

Are you accessing the drive using an administrator account or a regular user account?

If YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that no data is on the drive, try formatting it to FAT32. The reason for that is so you can be sure that other Operating Systems can see the format.

If you have a burner, you can download free software that will help in this, Hirens Boot CD or UBCD or Barts PE, or any of the Live CD Linux Distros

Google the names to find the source.

    It should work then
