Download an ISO image from a Linux website and burn it to a CD/DVD. Next boot your computer from the CD/DVD. This will load the Linux OS into computer memory where it will run without disturbing your Windows OS. In this mode you may try out the Linux. If you wish to install the Linux onto your computer's HDD, you need to click the appropriate button in the Linux running in computer memory.

At this point you will be asked whether you want to erase the existing OS or dual boot ( a different phrase may be used for "dual boot"). Choose the latter to keep Windows.

The above instructions work for a pre Windows 8 machines. The game has changed with UEFI, Secure Boot.
