I've authored a book on consulting. Rather than self-promote with a link, you can contact me directly at Lew@Consulting101Book.com for more information.

Don't worry too much about business planning until you have some clients paying you. First though, you need to decide on your niche, since targeting a niche will lead to less competition and generally a higher hourly rate.

As for what you need to get started, my advice is not to overthink things. You don't need a ton of equipment, brochures, etc., and most of the things you need can be obtained inexpensively; for instance, you can get a professional website for under $100 (I show you step-by-step how create your $100 website in my free ebook, available on my blog).

I've found that fear often stops aspiring consultants from starting a consulting business, and on my blog, I talk about how to overcome those fears. I also talk about practical, concrete things you can do to start and run a successful consulting business, along with tools, tips, tricks, and techniques for automating your business and keeping costs to a minimum.

Most importantly, just start someplace and do something on your business each day. The more you do, the that you'll find that things will start happening (i.e., the harder you work the luckier you become).
