No software will make your computer noticably faster. There are some programs that "free up ram," but all they do is page stuff to the hard drive, which hurts your performance when you need that stuff. Having a good deal of experience with AVG, I would say that the best thing you could do to speed up your computer is get rid of AVG Internet Security and use AVG antivirus or AVG antimalware, as they use much less ram. Then use the windows firewall (which is good enough for most home users, esp. if you--as most people are--are using a router with a built-in firewall). If you don't want to pay anything but are worried about having adequate protection, use AVG free antivirus and the free version of adaware. Just remember to tell adaware to scan your computer occasionally, as the free version of adaware does not have active protection or scheduled scans. AVG internet security uses a lot of ram, which slows down your computer. You could add ram, as it usually is a cheap and easy way to improve your computer's speed. (Unless you already have maybe 1.5gb for xp or 3gb for vista--I know these figure's may be high for some computers, depending upon the configuration.)
You could also eliminate extra startup programs and background processes to help free up ram and improve performance.

You might try ccleaner. It has a decent
Another program by the same company is defraggler, which may help.

A good scan for spyware, etc might be spybot S&D. Spyware can slow things down tremendously. In Spybot, under advanced settings, there is a thing for tools, and BHO's. Bad stuff can hide in there without showing up in the "start up list"

    Hope this helps.

After running those things you might see faster PC performance.
