Boot problems

Yesterday my desktop computer (that was on) monitor (Gateway LCD) displayed a mosaic of green and black. The desktop is Gateway with Win XP Professional. I turned the computer off (hard shut down by turning off the power). I restarted, the key board lights up but nothing else happens, although the computer power comes on. The mouse (optical)light is off as well. No image on the monitor and nothing happens. I have tried another monitor but no effect. I disconnected the monitor and started the system. The monitor goes to self test and displays "No Signal." I am wondering if I have a hard disk failure since the fan is on and I suspect the power supply is OK. Could anyone help?

    This could be a failure of the video card. The GPU has to boot first, displaying the video BIOS and then the CPU BIOS and count memory. If you get no beeps but the keyboard lights flash, then you could assume the 5 volts is okay. If the fans turn okay on power up then you could assume the 12 volts is okay. This would lead to the video card failure being the fault.

    What type of Gateway computer? There will be a type and a serial number some where on the box, Gateways and E machines were/are bad with video. Power down and wait a few hours and try again.

    If you feel comfortable opening and trying things inside of your computer great. If not take it to a good computer repair shop. This could save you time and money in the long run because some of the things that need to be done require you to buy things or to do things that could void the warranty.
    And a good shop will back up and give you the copy of your hard drive .Only try these things if you know what you are doing!

    If you have a spare PCI video card try adding it to see if it will show the boot up menu, if so you can get into the BIOS and see what is set at boot up.
    You can try to reset the BIOS by jumping pins J24 look here.

    Using j24 to reset the cmos loads default values for operation of the mobo.
