In general the router has a single port in the back called WAN this is where you would put a CAT5 cable from your dsl modem to your router.

The next four ports are the switch, this is where you would plug in each workstation.

Now some modems have built in routers. Meaning all you need is a switch.

However, you can always download the manual to the router / modem to help set things up.

    Lynn,
The modem/dsl devices provided by most cariiers have a network(RJ45) jack and a USB jack. To allow the connection to either a cable/dsl firewall router or a USB directly to a PC. I have head that some of these modems will allow you to connect to both connections but not most.

Best bet is to run the RJ45 cable from the cable modem to the Belkin Cable/Dsl Router. You want the wire to go to the port marked "WAN" or "INTERNET". You can then plug your RJ45 cable from your PC to the Belkin.

If you still don't connect power down each device and then bring up in the order.

    power on modem
    power on Belkin
    Power on PC.
