Did you mean you already have a backup? or you just mean not done anything at all? forget about it ,i'll introduce you two way for windows XP backup.

First, actually you do not have to get any third ware, because Windows XP provides a powerful Backup and Restore program, with this, you can backup your system to other partition or an external hard drive. To start it, go to Control panel-security-backup and restroe.

You said you need a third software, i recommend you to try some free software, there are plenty of software that hold a powerul features. bassically, third software is more versatile than windows buit-in backup and restore, here is a tutorial about how to do a system backup(http://www.backup-utility.com/features/system-backup.html), go get it .

You'll need to tell us that and what the OS of the system you made them with so we can attempt to help you recover the data.

Of course if you had encrypted files and used the Backup Utility in XP and are trying to recover them in Windows 7 then you really have a problem as Windows Backup isn't compatible between the two OS's and you'll need to load some form of XP onto a system to perform the recovery.
