Cannot share files over VPN

lorenkln
Hello,
I have recently set up a VPN initially to allow access to my home computer (XP 32, cable modem, behind d-link DGL-4500 router, Comodo) and its files using my laptop (XP pro 64, Sprint mobile broadband and GF's cable connection for troubleshooting). The VPN is set up using a bridged connection on the desktop and OpenVPN software.

I can connect error free, ping the server from the client (laptop) using the local IP or computer name. I can ping the laptop from the server using its local IP address, but not its computer name. The laptop can see all computers in the servers local network, as well as the d-link router. I can logon to the router using its web interface. I cannot access the service using its IP or hostname in a browser, or through the workgrouped computer browser (i.e. network neighborhood). Once again, the server is visible to the client, but not accessible. My user name and password are the same on both computers, and file sharing works fine when on the local network.

I've read some mixed things about IP address allocation. I currently have the D-link DHCP assigning ip address in the range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100. Open VPN assigns IP addresses from 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.200. The client thus receives two separate IP addresses, one from the sprint ISP and another from the the VPN via the virtual tap adapter.

I have also reduced the MTU size to 1400 on both virtual adapters.

How do I access the server's files? Is this a Netbios issue on the XP 64 computer?

Thank you much.
